The spell which shaped the modern world bears a simple name: "Permanency." Before Permanency was invented, spells in the First Age took decades to master, and were of a limited duration. One barbarous tribe discovered the means to use Permanency to enchant their entire society, using mountains of a once plentiful, yet essential, material: jade. The enchanted Jade Tribe was stronger, faster, more adept at magic than the rest of humanity. Within a generation, they plundered all the nations of the world, reducing civilization to a primitive state.
The Jade Tribe fragmented to infighting, other tribes discovered the means to enchant their kin, and new Nations were born in the ashes of the Old World. This New World is governed by enchanted tribes known as "Clans", and those magically empowered individuals are called "Paragons."
Players take on the role of young Paragons, members of an entitled World-dominating elite shaped by centuries of magical experimentation. The players are trusted to put aside their divided interests to serve their Nation in a time of great turmoil. Dangers come not only in the form of other Paragons, but also from the Great Terrors, inscrutable evils conjured in bygone eras. Not even their own peasant subjects can be fully trusted, having long chafed under Paragon rule.
