Basically what Kraynic said, it helps to specify what system you're using. However, for 5th edition I am fond of making a macro that says; /em rolls a [[1d20+@{selected|initiative_bonus}&{tracker}]] for initiative! and it works perfectly but it doesn't need to be that elaborate.
