The things that you feared as a child are real, and hiding under the blanket or sleeping with the lights on is not going to protect you. They are stepping out of the darkness. You are a hunter, one of the few who know the dangers we face. You and your team may be all that stands against these dark creatures. What will you do? How far will you go? Who will you sacrifice? “Bumps in the Night” is a horror themed game where the players take on the roles of monster hunters. The monsters can take many forms from mischievous creatures who may turn out to be beneficial to horrible demons determined to torture and destroy anyone they encounter and anything in between. If you are familiar with TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, X-Files or Wynonna Earp, you know everything that you need to get started. Game Mechanics The game will use the Monster of the Week (MOTW) rules available from Evil Hat Publishing. It is a Powered by the Apocalypse game system. Resources for Monster of the week are available at Evil Hat Publishing. We will be using the Monster of the Week Revised - Playbooks. For players new to MOTW, the Monster of the Week Revised – Hunter Reference Sheets is a great introduction to what you can do in the game. Familiarity with the rules is not required. Discord will be used for Voice. Each game session will be approximately 2 hours. We will play weekly on Thursday evening (9:30 - 11:30 EDT) Some World Information Hunters are heroes. Regardless of what has happened in the past, or what type of person your hunter may be, they are actively working to stop some sort of evil. Everything takes place in a modern world. There are modern laws and modern consequences for breaking them. Demons, Necromancers and Dimensional Rifts seem to be behind many of the bad things that have happened, although all of the classic type monsters may be encountered. Each monster type might be one of several breeds for that type. Silver might work on one type of werewolf, while another might require a weapon of cold steel, or one that has been blessed. When in doubt, movie tropes are a good fallback, as they serve as a source of modern myths and legends, and like many such stories, there may be a glimmer of truth in what they share. A monster that simply falls down after an attack is almost never dead. Going toe-to-toe with a monster in a fight isn't going to end well. Most people can only be harmed 2 or 3 times before being killed. Don't forget to use first aid to tend to wounds so that they don't get worse. The most dangerous threat might not be the monster killing everyone. Use its weakness to destroy it. While monsters have always existed, there has been a noticeable increase in activity. The average person does not believe in monsters, and they will go to extremes to rationalize a monstrous encounter. The Keeper of Monsters and Mysteries That’s me, Keith. In the online community I normally go by Sombalance. Keeper is the term used by MOTW to identify the GM. I’m older than the internet and have been playing RPGs for decades. Most of the time I’m a GM, but occasionally I get to be a player too. I enjoy RPGs that allow us to build a shared story. This will be the first game I’ve run on Roll20 since the early days of the system. I think I’ve caught up on the changes, but I’m also sure there are things I’ve missed. We’ll primarily use Roll20 for die rolling, shared handouts and world mapping (although, mapping might not be the correct word for it). Most of the story will take place in the Theater of the Mind. I’ve written a few novels (Sword & Sorcery and Urban Fantasy books). With a novel, I plan everything. When I GM, I plant the seeds, but it will be the choices of the players that determine how they will grow. Content Warning The game may contain elements of horror, violence, death, dismemberment, self-mutilation, occult references, darkness, confined spaces, wermin and other things that may be creepy and unsettling. We will use a modified Script Change Toolkit approach to dealing with difficult scenes which allow players to fast-forward through a scene. How to get started You can private message me, respond to this post or check out the [Looking for Group Listing]( https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/292610/bumps-in-the-night-motw ). I’ll need a few things to help us get started. What is your name (and what is your preferred pronouns)? What is your RPG experience? What do you want to get out of the game? What sort of hunter do you want to be? (Don’t focus on game mechanics at this time. I’m looking for what motivates your character to hunt monsters instead of hiding from them. If there is a specific playbook you like, let me know.)
