D&D for Tired Parents

This sounds like a crazy idea, but it might just have some merit. (This is also listed in the Looking for Players Listings - Same title. Feel free to apply there.) I am looking to form a gaming group specifically targeting parents. We all have our normal days of work, chores, and especially kids, and now it is time for us to have some fun. I have found this to be especially difficult in these times of COVID. So let’s see if we can do something about it. I would like a diverse gaming group and invite those interested to apply. As mentioned, I am looking for parents of children for this group. My hope is that we will all have an understanding that those little buggers do need to factor in as well. If nothing else, random questions from them, the need to get snacks, quick bedtimes, etc. just might be happening. I am also looking for a balance between testosterone and estrogen. I find too much of one leads to unbalanced play. So far I have had a lot of male interest. I'd love to diversify that. I welcome new and beginning players, as well as anyone that knows a bit, but is also willing to help/teach those that know very little. (Patience required.) Lastly, and I know this is a big ask... I am looking for a group where we take turns GMing. I am willing to go first, setting the tone and kicking things off. I am also happy to always help players make characters no matter who is GMing, but sometimes I just would like to be a player using my NPC as a PC. To this end I am also willing and expecting to help other GMs with various bits of advice, rules questions, and even go so far as to make the games on my Pro Account and list you as a Co-Gm so that you get all the benefits (Modules, Tokens, Dynamic Lighting, etc.) and have none of the cost. I also own most of the resource books on Roll20. With the reality of life, and those kids, I am assuming premade modules would be the easiest and best, perhaps from the Yawning Portal or Candle Keep, or both! So who is with me? Any parents out there want to give this a shot? I would figure we would meet each other to discuss this idea, character concepts and start dates/times first. Perhaps start playing in June-ish. I also figure this would be an every other week sort of schedule. In your reply (post below or in the game listings) please include… - Name: - Description of age (no actual ages needed): - Age of children: - Time Zone: - Best play nights/times: - Where you sit on the testosterone/estrogen scale: - Where you sit on the Never played/I’ve played since version 1.0 D&D scale: - If you have a character concept / play style. (Don’t worry, we will meet to develop characters before we play.): Here’s my write up for your reference - Name: Goose - Description of age: I am what you might consider an old timer with a young heart. - Age of children: one child Age 11 - Time Zone: Eastern - Best play nights/times: After 8pm. Not Tuesdays, Prefer not Friday or Saturday. - Where you sit on the testosterone/estrogen scale: Male and I do love combat, but I try VERY hard to be a role player and think with my brain and not other parts. My favorite D&D campaign I run includes only women. They actually ask questions before they hit things! - Where you sit on the Never played/I’ve played since version 1.0 D&D scale: So, yeah, I played the first version of D&D. But I was very young at the time. I always consider the story more important than the individual rolls of the players as long as it furthers that story. As GM I have been known to have the monsters “miss” an attack because my players have been doing everything they can, but just getting crappy rolls. - If you have a character concept / play style: My preferred play is a support character. Specifically, Sorcerer (Healer) or Bard of Lore. Though I just made an NPC for my other campaign and they are a Bard of Eloquence and came out pretty neat. For the technical among you out there, I also want to use these tenets for play... - Rules will be followed in the RAI fashion from the core D&D books. (Rules as Intended - Errata and Sage Advice will be consulted from time to time.) - Characters will follow the expanded section in the TCE resource book. (Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, with some simple added benefits sprinkled in for balance.) - Books Allowed - PHB, DMG, XGE, TCE, SCAG, VGM. Possible sections allowed can come from other materials if they are balanced. - Books not allowed - MOT, AI, EGW. (I feel none of these are balanced with core D&D books) - The simplified Spell Point system will be used in place of Spell Slots for players. - Character concepts (class / race) will be allowed to be slightly “tweaked” in a home brew fashion to allow particular concepts to be played. That said, these “tweeks” WILL be fair and balanced. - All players will have the same XP totals. (Even if they miss a night.) - Players will gain XP, not their characters. This simply means that if a character should die a player’s new character will have the same XP as the former. - Gameplay will be balanced with nice doses of Roleplay, Storytelling and Combat. - While the frequency of death of a character should be normal, the ability to have a character raised should always be attainable. That said, asking for payment, favors or quests in return, should also be common. This is easily attainable through the Religious Order Patron perk (free raise dead spells). - All participants will help each other with the rules. Since we are all playing and/or GMing, and many of us possibly for the first time, it would be nice to help each other and not be disruptive. (On a personal note I have been GMing for 500+ hours and I still don’t know all the rules. I still look to my players for some clarification.) - Real world family is a thing. We should have no issues with delaying for a moment or even a play session if there are personal issues that happen. Especially when it involves our children. - We will play with both video and voice through Roll20. I find seeing people helps for expression and roleplay. And besides, we are parents, we don’t need to impress anyone.

Does it have to be 5e or will other systems be welcome? I suppose we could let the DM decide - Name: Brett - Description of age (no actual ages needed): Middle age I guess - Age of children: negative three months - Time Zone: PST - Best play nights/times: Mondays after 6 - Where you sit on the testosterone/estrogen scale: Male - Where you sit on the Never played/I’ve played since version 1.0 D&D scale: 3.5 - If you have a character concept / play style. - Name: Michael P. - Description of age (no actual ages needed): Old enough to have gotten a gently used Fiend Folio at a yard sale in 1986. - Age of children: 13, 9, 2 - Time Zone: EST - Best play nights/times: Weeknights after 8:30. Saturday after 9, Sundays are almost always open for any timeslot. - Where you sit on the testosterone/estrogen scale: 7.5 out of 10 on the testosterone scale. I read a lot of vintage pulp, but I also listen to a lot of Kate Bush. Do with that what you will. - Where you sit on the Never played/I’ve played since version 1.0 D&D scale: I've been collecting rulebooks/modules since '85, playing since '93. I'm not the biggest fan of 5e but I'm sure I'll enjoy playing just about anything with other busy parents. - If you have a character concept / play style. It all depends on the game and the group. I'm here to have fun!

- Name: Peter - Description of age (no actual ages needed): 30 - Age of children: 7,5 and 4 months ;) - Time Zone: CST - Best play nights/times: M,T,F after 8:30PM CST (this may be able to budge a bit earlier if needed, but needs approval from my wife) - Where you sit on the testosterone/estrogen scale: I am a guy. - Where you sit on the Never played/I’ve played since version 1.0 D&D scale: Long-time consumer of content (starting with my Dad's AD&D manuals around the age of 5) but sadly I've never gotten any games off the ground, which means I'm still basically a noob when it comes to rules. Big barrier right now is that I'm in grad school + parental responsibilities means I have a limited time windows. - If you have a character concept / play style. (Don’t worry, we will meet to develop characters before we play.): I'm really in love with High-Elf necromancer or some sort of wizard family scion (as I've said, I've never gotten to play this concept into the fun levels). However, I would like to stress I am open to branching out into other classes and concepts ( long time sufferer of altitis). I'd love to do the old school 'roll stats first' then pick best class type of build too. I also love to come up with backgrounds and back stories as well and am open to tailoring it to worlds and campaigns etc. Note: I'd probably have to wait a year before I can take on any heavy duty GM duties (I graduate next spring). I could run a one-shot this summer if needed as I've been toying with the idea already (would need time to prepare though).

(Don’t worry, we will meet to develop characters before we play.): I've got a list of characters a mile long and can play whatever\whenever. I care more about the backstory than the mechanics, and getting along with a party
Ok everyone since you are all parents you know how things can just happen. I am a person that believes in transparency so here it is. While I was making this very sincere offering of doing a parents game night I reconnected with some friends out of the blue. Come to find out they have a group running with very similar expectations. Rotating DM, Kids, Parents all that jazz. I told them about you all and they would like to keep your names around if people drop out. I however, I just don't have the time to be in 2 games as of now, so I am going to join them and NOT delete this thread. As of now that group has 3 guys and 3 gals. But there is also good news. You all can use this listing to get each other's names and continue what I instigated. I really do appreciate the out pouring of support for our type of fun and hope you all continue. And like I said I'd love to connect with some of you when spots open up in the game I am joining. After all, they are all parents, have kids, and work too much. Someone will bow out at some point. Sincerely, Goose
