Need Some Recommendations

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. If it's not, I'm sorry to bother you. A friend recently invited me to try out Blades in the Dark . I was pretty excited. I liked the whole Dishonored / Gangs of New York vibe it had going for it and was looking forward to a gritty crime narrative. Unfortunately when I actually started playing the game I started to run into problems. Turns out it has a whole non-linear system for planning heists, where players jump back and forth in time, and occasionally throw in flashbacks. This kind of thing might work great in a movie but in a tabletop RPG it just left me confused and overwhelmed, not sure what to do because I could barely keep track of what was happening before I even had a chance to decide what gear I wanted to bring with me. I couldn't keep going with it and had to stop, much to my disappointment as I really wanted to like the game, but if I was going to spending every session just getting confused and feeling useless there wasn't much sense in persisting. The thing is, I really liked the character I made for it and was looking forward to roleplaying her. When I realized I wouldn't be able to keep going I started to wonder if maybe there was a different game I could rework her for so at least all the time and effort I put into making her doesn't go to waste. There was just one problem- what game would that be? I only knew of one off the top of my head- Gangbusters , which I haven't played and don't know much about other than the name- and of course it isn't listed on Roll20. I couldn't find very many options listed on the website. The few that did look like possible leads, such as City of Mist and Gumshoe , had absolutely no listings available. So basically I'm looking for a good, reasonably straight forward crime-themed RPG where I could rework my character. It probably wouldn't be too far of a stretch to adapt her from a 1860's Gangs of New York style character into a 1920's style if that's what available, but I can't seem to find much. I need something that's available on Roll20 and actually has listings available. I was hoping I could get some recommendations. Thank you for anything you can provide.

My best recommendation for this is, keep looking for Games offered (or start your own game) in 1 or All of the game systems that you know about already, the ones you mentioned above. Including the 2 that have a listing in Roll20's drop-down menu,  Including also the 1 game system that you know about, which isn't listed in Roll20 (like, "Gangbusters"). People can still play that game on Roll20, probably listed under "Other Games" category if it isn't officially recognized in the drop-down listings. Just because there's no games offered today in those categories, there might be a Game offer in there tomorrow (and then it could be filled & disappeard by the next day).  Keep checking those searches daily. Read also the Looking for Game FORUM of roll20, scroll back for several days of posts and see if you can find anyone posting/talking about that type of game. Look also on other websites (like Detective / Gumshoe game forums) and ask there for people who play it using Roll20. There are so many 1000's of games running on Roll20, chances are that people are playing those games here now, but there isn't one that is advertising for new players.  There's a lot more games on Roll20 that what you'll see listed in LFG on any given day. Keep trying!

I'd look into Call of Cthulhu. It's often set in 1920's and detectives are commonplace.
I've heard a lot of good things about Call of Cthulhu. I actually participated in a  one-shot that ended pretty badly (got the hounds of tindalos burned into my brain, and they destroyed me from the inside out). To be fair I somehow didn't totally read the "Cthulhu" part and somehow wasn't prepared for the weird stuff. I've thought about looking into that one. In this instance I had been looking for something more crime-oriented but I could see how my character might work there. One option that I'm starting to wonder about is Shadowrun. It's more futuristic sci-fi than I'd intended to go for but it does revolve around crime and has a noir atmosphere where a gangster probably wouldn't be totally out of place. My character was originally designed with an 1860's Gangs of New York vibe but I'd already been prepared to rework her for another era, and I don't know- maybe there's a way I could retain some of the original design while updating her to a futuristic setting.

Shadowrun might also be a good choice. With cosmetic modifications to your character you can still retain the core elements that make her, her.
I'm starting to wonder about that. There doesn't seem to be a lot of Shadowrun games on Roll20 at the moment but I can keep watching for them.

You might try Carbon, the 5E reskin in a cyberpunk setting... in our game we have tons of gangs, except it's gangs of San Francisco, and there's an investigation class, etc. It feels very much like near future noir. Edit: We just lost a player too. 6 CST Tuesday (the time of this edit). I can ask my DM if you'd be welcome and make the connection.

I appreciate the offer, but unfortunately I'm already with a D&D group that plays around that time so I'll have to pass on your invitation. But I can definitely look into Carbon.
The Kickstarter for Good Guys Finish Last just ended  Not sure if he will do the other game Villains Finish First  you play as a sort of Legion of Doom
