Roll20 no longer usable

We have been having problems the last couple of weeks with our game. First off, the interface becomes sluggish over time. Second, we have to exit and restart the game multiple times during a session due to problems with the API crashing. The video for one of the users (our remote player) is not visible except for brief glimpses at the top of the page. Things have gotten worse and the API is now useless and gives constant errors. As you can see the software is currently useless to me. I hope to have a solution for my players well before this weekend. Since Roll20 is unusable at the point I am researching alternatives to Roll20. I'd love to keep giving you guys my money as I think you have a great concept but these sort of problems are ruining my players experience.

Charles invited me into the campaign to take a look. I've never seen this error before: events.js:72 throw er; // Unhandled 'error' event ^ Error: listen EADDRINUSE at errnoException (net.js:904:11) at Server._listen2 (net.js:1023:19) at listen (net.js:1064:10) at Server.listen (net.js:1132:5) at Sandbox.start (/home/symbly/www/d20-api-server/sandcastle/lib/sandbox.js:35:15) at Object.<anonymous> (/home/symbly/www/d20-api-server/sandcastle/bin/sandcastle.js:11:9) at Module._compile (module.js:456:26) at Object.Module._extensions..js (module.js:474:10) at Module.load (module.js:356:32) at Function.Module._load (module.js:312:12)

The API has recently been having some issues and as a result has undergone some changes: <a href="https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1014870/importan" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1014870/importan</a>... If you are getting API errors I suggest posting in that thread or PMing Riley. Regarding the sluggish nature of your game I suggest the following steps to help identify what is causing the sluggishness: 1) Turn off your Dynamic Lighting and check if it is still sluggish. If it is still sluggish proceed to step 2. 2) Turn off your API and check if it is still sluggish. Let us know if either of these alleviated the problem so we can focus on that area. If neither did, please go to <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Solving_Technical_Issues" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Solving_Technical_Issues</a> and follow the steps.
Which campaign is it (what's the ID number or a link to the details page)? Probably what' shappening is your sandbox is crashing and restarting too quickly. But if it's crashing that probably means it's running up against one of the new CPU/memory limitations.

It's not my campaign, but Charles asked me to look into it. Campaign id: 380004 When I was looking around, I only saw the error I posted above. He was using one script I know has a bug in it. I rewrote it from scratch for Jarret a while back, so I commented out the faulty one and installed the rewrite. I played with each of the various scripts for about half an hour and didn't get any other errors.
Hi guys, Thank you for the responses. I can tell you that during the game, the API crashed with more than one error but I wasn't able to tell which script the errors went to. The problem to date has been that something goes wrong during a game, Aaron's helped me fix it and then I test it and everything's fine. Then when people actually log in to play we start having problems again. I'm starting to suspect the sluggishness is the result of the players drawing on the map. They like to make notes on it for their reference with the drawing tools and I suspect that is what bogged everything down. :( I'll have to do some testing and I'll try to answer your questions today. Thanks again, -Charles

The drawing tools has been noted to cause resource drain on computers, especially the free hand tool. This in turn creates a lag due to this and the older the computer the harsher the effect. The free hand tool does not draw a solid line but a long series of dashes to simulate a line and your browser has to refresh every one of those dashes each time something is changed on the viewable screen. That takes a lot of graphic and memory. The work around is to use the polyline not the freehand.
Hi Pat, Yeah, I read that and was worried but I'm really hoping that's not the case. I hope the developers are noticing this sort of thing. Using roll20 is kind of like walking through a mine field laced with candy. There's tons of cool stuff to pull you in but be careful touching it too much or it might explode.
