"Patrician Purius Justepa of Nuvium seeks adventurers and men of diverse experience to assist him in the exploration of the Isles of Emnos. Even the humblest of the heathens inhabiting the Isles eat from golden plates and their unholy idols are adorned with gems as big as a man's fist. Previous missionaries to the islands have not been heard from again and the Church calls for her shepherds to be found and if needs be, avenged. The Patrician has commissioned a fine ship and respected captain to transport his men across the ocean and surviving employees will receive a hundredth share of all loot found. Interested parties should report to Captain D'Sario of the Seahawk on Nossae docks before the Feast of St. Piona." We're doing Romans in magical Australia! Using the Five Torches Deep ruleset, which is a streamlined version of 5E hearkening back to a more old school style of play - player characters are substantially weaker, magic is unpredictable and deadly, and monsters can be expressed in a few numbers and phrases. Some key differences for those used to 5E: - No short rests - Characters regain hit points slowly - Encumbrance matters - Equipment breaks - Characters may die - No multi-classing, feats or similar - Magic can fail or go horribly wrong. Mutation tables ahoy! - Monsters and NPCs have morale and will run away - XP is earned by capturing gold There's also good videos from Questing Beast and Dungeon Craft that provide more information here and here . I realise this is quite a gloomy sounding list, but all these things combine to make a more challenging experience that's all the more fun when you do overcome great hardship and succeed. We'll be doing a lot of traditional D&Disms - rolling stats in order, characters are grubby adventurers not shiny heroes - but Five Torches Deep has some character customisation similar to 5E, allowing a blend of OSR and modern mechanics. I'm applying my own modifications on top of that for a more grounded feel to combat and avoid hit point bloat. Play will be structured so each session is self contained preventing the game from stalling if people can't make it and at the same time letting me try something different from week to week as different teams explore the islands. Essentially, I'm aiming for a situation where the party picks a location on the map and the session is about that expedition. Next week, a new location or perhaps they go back to try again. I'll be running on Sundays at 5PM BST, using Discord for comms. Any questions, please let me know.
