Quest Description Miners working near Cathal's Doom Mine in hopes of finding a fresh vein of ore have struck upon an especially unusual find within the mine: an ancient dwarven vault! Their excited letters back to town promised untold wealth, but now nobody has heard from them in some time. Concerned that perhaps they dug too deep, the Miner's Association is offering a reward of a masterwork martial weapon, masterwork set of light or medium armor, and 100 gold pieces to each brave soul who ventures out into the wilderness and brings back news of what happened to the expedition. If you don’t like dwarves then this definitely isn't the quest for you. Requirements This isn’t a dwarf only quest. However they will be prioritized over others. Mounts aren’t required. Nice
Is everyone good with the 8th?
What's all the commotion geezer? Ol' Reggie'll be ready to take a butchers. Hopefully there's some apples and pears to go down, don't want to be mucking about wiv none of that climbing malarky
Is that the evening of the 7th AEST?
No I don’t think so. Should still be on the 8th
Not that he likes to blow his own horn but Larry Hornblower is no quitter, he'll be there!
Hmm, I've got Sunken Tower on the 10th, might struggle to make both...   Any chance we could make this for the 15th?
I mean I guess. But does Sunken Tower have enough people to go ahead? You only have 3 people signed up since Larry is on this quest.
Eric G. said: Is everyone good with the 8th? Make it the 9th and you’re good.  As I’ll have just traveled back from the US that weekend and I’m going straight from a red eye flight to running games, I think I’ll need the full two days off to survive
That’s fair
Actually I'm good.  Sunken Tower is actually the week after.  Lock me in for the 9th.

Return to the Dwarven Mines, as told by Glaurung the Golden Sune's blessings on you all!  Pull up your chairs and lean forward, this is a sorry tale of bad decisions, bad luck and outright robbery. When last we left off our tale about exploring the Dwarven Vaults we’d just handily defeated a pack of death dogs.  As we searched the campsite outside the mine we heard some loud snoring a short distance away.  It proved to be Burglekutt the Diviner.  He’d grown bored waiting for us and was snoozing in some bushes blissfully unaware of the deadly combat taking place under his nose! In any case, the campsite was littered with dead miners and the cause of death seemed to be various bites and puncture wounds, certainly not the work of man.  In particular there was one corpse whose skull was ringed all round with tiny punctures, a mystery we would sadly soon solve. The search also yielded a fine collection of gold trade bars which we stowed on our mounts for transport back to hope.   Given the sorry wounds suffered by Orax and Frank we decided a rest was in order.  Fortunately the night passed without incidence, though many a theological discussion was held about the nature of gods, how many there might be and what exactly it meant to be omniscient or omnipotent. The morning found us a little more hale, though Orax seemed to have picked up a nasty disease from a death dog bite. Girding our loins and lighting torches, we ventured inside the mines with the stealthy Reginald Tealeaf leading the way.  Alas we didn’t get far before falling afoul of a slink of dark mantles.  These fearsome beasts attacked by enveloping their victim’s head and crushing them to death, all the while blinding their sight.  Even worse, the foul beasts could create areas of darkness that covered entire sections of the caves with fuligin pools of death.  It’s impossible to sensibly recount that chaos that ensued as we were successively blinded, bitten and in Frank’s case, charmed!  It truly looked dismal for our little band with Frank attacking his companions and Reggie and I laid low by dark mantles and bleeding our last into the dirt floor of the mines.  It was even said that the redoubtable Orax Thunderfoot turned tail and fled to the exit of the mines, though I can’t verify that claim. Just as doom appeared certain for most of our band, hope dawned at the hands of our diviner!  Burglekutt unleashed a mighty flood of magic missiles that slew the leader of the dark mantles and freed Frank from mental dominion.  I managed to throw off the dark shroud of death to cast two mighty enchantments that successively dropped two of the beasts into ensorcelled sleep.   Larry and Orax ventured back into peril to tend the mortal wounds of Reggie and I, thus snatching us back from death’s door while a vengeful frank bludgeoned another dark mantle to death. The battle was won but at the cost of much of our strength.  While poor Larry laboured to skin and harvest the bodies of our foes, we debated our next move.  We wisely decided to return to Hope and recover our strength but, alas, we decided to rest outside the mines first.    In the middle of the night a dragon passed overhead and though we stealthily took cover in the mines, Frank sneezed and caught its attention.  It was that notorious road agent Ragemaw and he swiftly descended to claim his toll.   Normally we would have sent the overweening wrym packing but our strength was at a low ebb, and we were forced to bargain for our lives with our hard won gold. The gold ingots were lost as was a large store of coins from Burglekutt and Reggie.  To add insult to injury, the dragon also toasted one of our mounts before taking to the skies.  It is past time we dealt with this evil beast. In the morning we compounded our errors of the night before by deciding to ‘take a quick peak’ inside the caves.   Our explorations uncovered a chasm suspended by two 20’ beams of wood.  Reggie again scouted ahead and managed to alert a pair of fearsome insectoid creatures.   We tried to flee but in the process both myself and Frank were laid low as the creatures spat jets of acid.  Fortunately our companions dragged us to safety and from thence we returned to Hope.  I end this tale with our heroes much poorer in coin but richer in experience.  We are resolved to return once more to the mines and finally complete the quest, and if Ragemaw should cross our path, well, it might not go so well for him as last time, if only because we have no more gold for him to steal.

Reggie’s Observations  Turns out that fucking sneaky bastard Burglekutt was already at the fucking mine! No idea why he went without us or where he was hiding while we fought them devil dogs but I bet he was puffing on a fat one if those bleary eyes and sweaty brow are anything to go by! Cheeky bloody blighter!! Anyway, we’re ‘ere now ain’t we? Starting into the tunnels, I check the middle and found a deep chasm with a shoddy “bridge” spanning it. Before I’d had time to think about that horror show, an actual fucking horror show started! The fucking stalactites started moving… for a second I wondered if I’d been downwind of Burglekutt for too long but before I could shout a warning, one of them fell on me and this thing started tryin’ ter eat my fucking brain! I ripped it off and started to run back down the tunnel. I dunno if the others heard me but next thing I know, someone had turned out all the fucking lights! I stumbled onwards and found myself in the light again and turned with my sling out. Orax was readying a spell too. As Glaurung burst out of the darkness with one of those things on his head, he collapsed! I managed to hit the thing that had felled him with my sling bullet and it squeaked and died! But then the darkness moved forward again and we lost sight… I dove into the dark and felt Glaurung ’s body. I managed to bandage his head and I reckon I stopped the bleeding before I tried to drag him away but I couldn’t get out of the darkness! Then another thing grabbed my head and damn near knocked me out cold. I managed to rip it off again and ran. Next thing I know, I was being shaken awake by Burglekutt . Seems that beautiful bastard had killed one of the beasts (darkmantles he reckoned) and saved a couple of us! That’s when Glaurung jumped to his feet and sent a bunch of them to sleep again! With Larry and Frank now seemingly free again, we could mop up the last of the darkmantles. Boy, we looked pretty fucked up… We discussed returning to Hope then. Clearly the best option given our extremely battered state… buuuuuut maybe we could take a quick rest and do a little scouting first? Curiosity killed the halfling, that should be the expression! Hanging around, I was on watch when I saw the unmistakable outline of a fucking dragon coming towards us… dowsing the fire and waking the others, we tried to hide in the caves. But Ragemaw would not be denied it seems… he sensed our presence and while Glaurung almost insulted him, Larry and Burglekutt managed to bribe it with a tonne of gold and it left (after incinerating poor old Burglekutt ’s horse). We barely slept the rest of the night… Morning didn’t bring much more sense it seems. We scouted the tunnels again. Nothing of immediate interest to the east or west, I took us back to the middle tunnel. Securing a rope, I crossed the “bridge” and tiptoed further down the tunnel. I could just make out a large lizard carcass before I remembered to dim my lantern! As I dimmed it, I saw the beast. Some sort of giant insect (later confirmed as an Ankheg)… backing up to the party, I was starting to tell them about when the floor started to shake!! As we beat a retreat, two of the fuckers burst out and sprayed us with acid. Frank went down… Glaurung went down… we ran… clearing the entrance, we realised not everyone was there! I managed to get Glaurung onto Larry (the camel, not the halfling!) and Orax bravely pulled Frank out. We headed home (quickly!) Although it had cost us a lot (particularly Burglekutt and Larry ), none of us were actually dead (yet) and we have a better idea of what awaits us when we go back! This group of little geezers is a group of big heroes in my eyes!!
Burglekutt's Journal I've heard a group of fresh-faced adventurers have taken up a job to investigate the Dwarven mines so I've decided to help them out on their first quest in the Harrowmere. My powers of Divination have allowed me to easily determine the exact time they will arrive at the mines, so I have decided to set off now and meet them there. I should have enough time to arrive ahead of them and set out a small luncheon of snails in honey and garlic, thick barley and venison soup, fresh river trout baked in clay (my favourite!), pigeon pie, baked apples with cinnamon and of course, honey cakes! The mines are but a days ride from Hope, a trivial journey really, I'm sure the others will be fine without me... I have arrived at the Dwarven Mines and made excellent time! Another quick scrying shows that my companions will be arriving here in precisely 5 hours. Excellent! The perfect amount of time for me to eat all of this delicious food and still fit in a short nap before they arrive!  As predicted, I was awoken by my companions right on time. They all seem a little miffed that I didn't 'help' them on their journey out here. I must say they still have a lot to learn about adventuring on the Savage Frontier - they'll never develop their skills if they have to rely on old Burglekutt every time they want to go anywhere. Not only did they complain about the journey, but they had no sooner woken me up when they decided to all go to bed! Couldn't they have just left me alone until the next morning?  The next day we entered the cave with Reggie scouting ahead. All seemed to be going well until we were set upon my a school   flock murder of Darkmantles. One of them attached itself to Frank's head which seemed to confuse the poor sod as he immediately started attacking us. We had to retreat outside to the entrance of the cave and for a moment I thought we would be overwhelmed. If it wasn't for Glaurang's sleep spells and my trusty magic missiles the day surely would have been lost. After the last Darkmantle was dispatched the party was exhausted so we decided to rest for the night. I was awoken from my slumber by a Red Dragon swooping down upon the camp. Ragemaw! We all fled into the mouth of the cave but unfortunately no one thought to bring our mounts inside with us. After bribing Ragemaw with a large sum of gold we managed to convince him to leave us be, but not before the wretched fiend incinerated my poor horse Diogenes!  Waking up the next morning considerably poorer, we decided to make one more push into the mines. We eventually came upon a larger cavern occupied by Ankhegs. Being in no condition to deal with the beasts we were forced to retreat and make our way back to Hope. After a few days of rest and recovery we plan on heading back out to the mines to finish off the Ankhegs.
