LF4P D&D 3.5 The Sunless Citadel

Edited 1406233369
The Campaign : "The Sunless Citadel is a D&D adventure suitable for four 1st-level player characters. Player characters (PCs) who survive the entire adventure should advance through 2nd level and 3rd level before the finale." This pre-made module is a pretty new player friendly module, although veterans of the setting who've never played it will also find several unexpected things awaiting them in the depths. The module offers plenty of chances for combat, roleplaying, puzzle solving and surprises for the players involved. Your DM : Before I continue about the campaign, I'll describe a bit about myself and how I intend to DM this module. This will be my first time trying my hand at DMing, though I've played 3.5 for a couple of years now over several different campaigns and find the setting quite to my liking. My DM style might seem a bit unorthodox to some and I have some fairly old style ways of doing things in terms of character creation and dungeon crawling. Overall its my hope that things will go well and ultimately everyone will have a good time with the adventure. By the end of the module, I'll know whether or not I wish to continue DMing and there is the potential the group could be moving on to another, higher level, module or even onto a custom campaign that I'll be designing. That being said, here is a bit about the game. Character Creation : We will be doing an organic style for the stat rolling, 4d6 drop the lowest and the order in which you roll the stats are the stats they correlate to. No moving around, individual re-rolls on stats 6 or lower and full rerolls if there are 3 or more 8's. Character classes may be chosen before or after you see your rolls. Core classes and races for this module, will open up if I do a custom campaign but keeping it simple for now. PBH1 and 2 are available for spells/feats, outside spells/feats might be ok'd after I check them out. Starting gold will be rolled based on the classes' value, and people are going to have to get creative if they skimp out on the RP items like food and such as I intend to try a rather immersive style of play. Target Date/Time : Weekly Sessions, Saturdays at 8pm EST until 12am EST. Longer sessions may be possible. Aside from that, there won't be any major changes to the 3.5 ruleset just yet in terms of homebrewing things, although that is open to change as the module and potentially the campaign progresses. I encourage new players who have never played d&d or people looking to get into the 3.5 ruleset join the module, I have no problem helping people learn the rules and what-not. Veteran players are also more than welcome, although it'd likely be best if you haven't played the module before in order to prevent pre-knowledge of things and potential spoilers for others. If you're interested in joining, shoot me a PM on here or reply to the post with any questions and I'll try to respond in a timely manner.
ill play this weekend I love 3.5
I haven't played the module before and a more core 3.5 is appealing. Though I am a bit leery of no stat rearranging. I am available 9pm+ CDT (UTC -5) on Thurs - Mon (not Tues or Wed). So if you are actually EDT it would be 10pm for a start time. If that works, let me know.
Hi, myself and a friend are looking to join a 3.5 campaign. He is experience, but I am fairly new. This seems like an interesting starting point. I would like to know more about when you are looking to start and who is already involved!
I would love to get in on a 3.5 Campaign, i have played a bit of 3.0 with my friends before and actually own the 3.0 PHB/DMG/MM hardcovers as well as lots of 3.5 pdfs. I have been kind of forced into being the DM for my friends when we all started so I'd like to get the chance to play once in a while (they are too afraid to try)
When I get home from work later today I'll go through and add people, we'll be using Skype to keep in touch so if you don't have it then please acquire it. Don't post your skype names on here though, PM me it and I'll add you.
Odds are the date I am setting up for this will be Saturdays at 8pm EST until midnight.

Forgive me for detracting the thread a tiny bit, but don't you feel that no stat-rearrangement is a bit strict? In many cases, it could prevent players from getting to play the class they want to, which I don't think is a nice way to introduce players to the game. For example, if someone wanted to be a sorcerer but rolled below a 10 on their final stat, their charisma would be to low to cast spells. Thus, they would have no choice but to play another class that they perhaps weren't interested in playing. That doesn't seem fun for anyone.
It doesn't seem fun to you is all.
Its effectively the way 2nd edition was run. Which most people hated. And yes, it does blatently restrict what class you play based on the order your decent stats appear in.

Some but not all, it takes away a player's need to worry about how to make their character's stats ideal for a certain class and lets them focus on enjoying the game, perfect for someone new to d&d or 3.5 in general.
Agree to disagree. If you roll an 8 STR, there went any hope at playing a melee class, you have to resort to a caster then, otherwise you are effectively useless. 2nd edition, which used this system, had little benefit for anything between 10 and 16 in a stat.. 3.5 is much different. those +'s matter much more.
Pretty sure weapon finesse can take care of low strength, GM can make magical items available that help boost strength, there are several ways to work around a player wanting to play a certain class and not having the ideal stats. Even without the workarounds, it lets a player adapt to situations in ways they wouldn't normally have to. 2E was restrictive because classes had stat requirements to enter them, 3.5 does not have those kind of limitations. Want to play a 6 str fighter wielding a greatsword? Go for it.
for to hit, yes. If you use a finessable weapon. Taking a PENALTY to damage rolls isnt conductive to an effectively character who is based around melee damage though. Being a 6 STR fighter with a greatsword may sound fun, but it will become ultimately frustrating and stop being fun when the character cant do what they are supposed to, and is severely penalized because he isnt strong enough to wear armor..etc..
Speaking from personal experience. I played a campaign like this and a lot of players left because they all had characters and back stories and goals in mind then rolled shitty stats I myself played a 10 str fighter with a 16 intel. He eventually became a military diplomat and all I got to do was rp and come up with battle plans and sometimes scout for the party while wearing medium armor it was a frustrating camp
We are just trying to forewarn you the difficulties inherent in this. This is your first time as a DM, and this is your heads up from those of use who have played in this manner before. You may proceed with it, but we are just making you aware of the HIGH likelyhood of excessive player turnover, due to dissatisfaction.
See, people are too spoiled with above average stats that they believe it is the norm, because that is how they were introduced to the game. A new player coming into the game shouldn't be playing a 18 str, 16 con fighter, it'll give them a poor perception of the game and unrealistic expectations for future ones. That being said its possible their rolls could be amazing and they end up with something like that, its just the way it goes. A DM can always adapt to keep the game interesting for players regardless of their starting stats and gear, a player should never worry about having a 10 str fighter and not being useful to the group.
+1 Michael m. I will still play but I'm a better player thsn I was was back then and can willing play a different class than I ant

I would be very interested. I am new to RP20 but not D&D 3.5 Saturdays are perfect for me and I will send you my Skype name when I get it installed again. :) Just my thoughts Gherick you are creating your character backwards. Pick a race, roll your stats then pick a class & create a back story that explains those stats. :) I LOVE being given random and making something from that. It makes me feel like my character was born instead of designed.
Exactly. Thank you.
I am the opposite. I have, in my head, what the character is like and what he can do; then, arrange the stats ive generated to represent that, and choose a class that fits the concept of what he can do.
Of course, and that is perfectly fine. Everyone has their own play style and may or may not like certain ones.
Any openings left?
There could be a slot or two still open, still speaking to people. PM me your skype if you wish to talk.
It might be worth considering allowing players to swap two stats. That will generally be enough to make the trope they want playable (e.g. it can pretty well guarantee a caster will have a high enough stat to actually cast spells) instead of having a character concept forced on them, while still generally preserving the idea that stats won't necessarily be optimized for a particular purpose.
Sorry, but it won't be changing. Plenty of people are fine with this style of rolling, if it doesn't suit your taste then that is fine.
Bumping this, have 2 players set in stone and currently looking to pick up about 3 more for a total of 5.

I think the mistake that you're making here Manveti is picking your class before you know your stats. Certainly you could do it first but you are better off doing it after.
Not so much a mistake, just a different way to play the game. I play from both spectrums, though I find the games I play with settings similar to the ones I'm running tend to be the most memorable.
Bumping this, still may be one or two slots open.
Still a slot open, we're planning on doing a meet and greet tonight in order for the players to talk to eachother, ask me any questions and get their sheets situated. Might do a couple hours of play, but most likely the game will officially start next weekend.

Cool. I'll be available for a period of time tonight. I might be able to talk another friend into playing if we could use more.
Still a slot availible.
I'd be interested although I don't have 3.5 books but I won't be home for 2 hours (I work on the west coast) if you are still looking I'll b available.
The times would be 8pm - 12am EST, so for you it'd be something like 4 or 5pm start time?
Ya and that's a little early most days unfortunately. Goo

Are we still planning to play Saturday?
Yes
