[LFP][TBD] Story-Focused & Creative Roleplayers for a Custom Campaign

1631386050

Edited 1632272070
I’m assembling a small group for a game that I’ll be running soon. I’m looking for people who prioritize the story and character arcs and who understand the importance of respect, trust, and collaboration. If your main interest in the hobby is character builds, gaining levels, and big numbers, I'd suggest you find a different game more suited to you. Usually I’d place a campaign pitch here but with several creative minds coming together, I’d much rather we work together to come up with something better than I could do alone, so we’ll sort out the theme/plot/tone of the campaign during session 0. I’ve included a little teaser below as a sample of the kind of (shortened) campaign pitch I gravitate to but it isn't the pitch for this game. There's more info on me and my style in my bio. I’m located in CST (UTC-6) and evenings of M,W,Th are available. If this interests you, please respond here. I’m going to leave this open for a week. I’ll be contacting you to arrange a chat over discord to see that we all mesh. I encourage women, PoC, LGBTQ+, etc. to respond. Age 21+ for general mature language & content. Here's a form you can use to say a bit about yourself - filled out by me. Pronouns: he/him Age: 42 Available: M, W, Th, UTC-6 evenings Roleplay Experience: I've GMed hundreds of sessions and dozens of campaigns. And I spend about half my time as a player Favorite system: Powered by the Apocalypse Questions/comments: I've made plenty already A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): The disappearances had been getting more frequent. Nobody knew anything, or at least nobody admitted it. When the fires broke out, that was all the excuse we needed. Let the flames consume that cursed place.  We fled with our families and whatever we could carry, looking for a new start. But we didn’t leave it behind. At the edge of the light, something lurks. Something dark has followed us.
Pronouns: he/him Age: 32 Available: Monday /Thursday 7pm (Mst) Roleplay Experience: Lots- Favorite system: Powered by the Apocalypse, Free from the Yoke, Legacy among the ruins, Blades in the dark, Scum and villainy Questions/comments: Are you looking for Players or Game Master? Are we looking to play PbtA Games? or something else? Are you running it or playing as a player? A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): You have freed the kingdom from The Empire, the once slavers and Tyrants, the mighty have fallen, Now under the new arbiter your kingdoms seek to raise, As does your House seek glory and power, but lands are torn and the peace is fresh with an air of danger. Now the New Age, the arbiter come a calling they have a Grand Project, will is settle the kingdom an bring us stronger together or will it divide us in are feud.

To Reading Crocodile: I wrote that I'd be running it. I'm looking for players (although the best players are those who GM...). As for system, it depends on what we decide the game will be about. I'm comfortable with a lot of different systems and don't want to scare off someone if they don't know it. All games I run are rules-light and Fiction First, so rules knowledge isn't important. I'm searching for people who can imagine their characters inside the fiction  and describe their actions that way.
Pronouns: He/Him Age: 45 Available: Monday EST Roleplay Experience: A good amount Favorite system: FATE and Fiasco. I've also had minimal exposure to PbtA (and adjacent systems) and Savage Worlds; both seem like great systems which I would like to have more in-depth experiences with. Questions/comments: Are there genres or themes you prefer over others? or, conversely, any that just bore you to death? Personally, I'm less inclined towards standard sword/sorcery tropes as I feel they've been done too often; I'm kinda interested in the idea of playing a group of people who are trying to restart or revitalize a dead or dying community: what kind of person does it take to more or less start from square one when there are likely better opportunities elsewhere? A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): The Queen's Shadow has tasked your small group with the infiltration of Her rival's Royal Court. Priority 1: Obtain information with which She may use to embarrass or blackmail members of that Royal Court. Priority 2: Subtly disseminate approved propaganda. Priority 3: Extract the heir to the predetermined safe house. Priority 4: (Bonus payment to be discussed after success) Engineer an illness to spread through the Royal Court during or immediately after the Midwinter Ball.

Hello, my name is Jason and I'm available on Thursday nights probably as early as 7pm CST. A bit about me below: Pronouns: he/him Age: 32 Roleplay Experience: I ran a game for about a year while I finished college. I've played for 5 years now. Favorite system: DND 5E Questions/comments: I ran my game the way you intend to run this one. I let my players backgrounds be the story and most all of them told me the peaks of their arcs were the best games they ever played. I look forward to possibly experiencing that from a players perspective. A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): As you and your team step out of the tavern into the night, you're met with odd fanfare. Not directed at you, but the sky. You can see the stars being enveloped by storm clouds, somehow more dark than the night sky. While everyone is shouting "the drought is over" you get a more ominous feeling. CRACK! A flash of lighting streaks from the sky and destroys a nearby cottage. Strong, howling winds whip across your faces as the bulk of the storm is upon you. Several more bolts cascade into the city with damaging percussion, but yet no fires start. Even more odd, there is no rain. In the wind, you hear a whisper, like someone is yelling from far away but right in your ear, "It's back! The gods are losing grasp on this world, you must abolish it or we all perishhhhhhh." As quickly as the voice is gone, so is the storm. What do you do?
Pronouns: he/him Age: 27 Roleplay Experience: I've GMed a few times sessions of my own Homebrew campaigns of D&D5e. And where I'm from the TTRPG scenario isen't all that popular so I was forced to become a "Forever DM" for my small group of friends. Favorite system: D&D5e. Questions/comments: Me and a Friend of mine are looking for a game is it okay that she doesn't have much experience? A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): Political intrigue is hiding in every nook and cranny and even on the sidelines, your characters may have an impact on the world that surrounds them, for good or for worse, Heavy on RP situations and Realistic outcomes.

@Innocence " Are there genres or themes you prefer over others? or, conversely, any that just bore you to death?" Theme-wise, I prefer the idea of: 'adventuring' is what happens to relatable people when confronted with an extreme situation. Examples: A group of archeologists are trapped in a cave-in - these people become interesting 'adventurers' as they are forced to 'dungeon delve' to get back to the surface; Every zombie movie where normal people are thrown into an outrageous situation and are forced to cope with it; Influential people in a town that comes under crisis and are motivated to maintain order, overcome the threat, persevere through the catastrophe, etc. One theme that I dislike is PCs doing work for strangers in a foreign land. As a simple and common example, compare: The captain of the guard asks a group of strangers (the PCs) to solve their bandit problem after a caravan on route to the city was attacked, versus; The caravan that is owned by a PC was attacked which threatens their livelihood, so they ask their cousin, their best friend, and one of their investors to help them get their cargo back so they don't starve/go bankrupt. The first approach too-often results in a lack of buy-in from players because their characters don't really care about this stranger's cargo, nor about the captain's problems, nor about the town's prosperity. But if the plot is your character's own problem, or your best friend's problem, or your investment in trouble, you get immediate motivation and cooperation. @Andre: "... is it okay that she doesn't have much experience?" Maybe? I've met very creative people who have never played a TTRPG before but those people usually have other hobbies with overlapping skillsets, e.g. improv theatre, creative writing, acting, directing, or avid reading. The games that I gravitate toward don't demand or reward system mastery, so that rules-knowledge isn't important but being able to contribute and make the story more interesting for everyone - that is important.
Pronouns:  she/her Age:  26 Available:  Monday /Thursday (anytime) Roleplay Experience:  I’ve been playing for a year, and role play is my favorite part of the game.  Favorite system:  DnD 5e Questions/comments:  will this be role play heavy? Im looking for a campaign that is.  A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): You dream about it’s masked face every night. You await it eagerly every time you close your eyes, wanting to know it’s meaning. One night, the masked face appears to you and speaks for the first time. It asks you to join a group of adventures to save its kingdom. If you refuse it’s call for help, you will be cursed until your last breath. (I suck at these  😅 )

Pronouns: he/him Age: 35 Roleplay Experience: I've GMed more than I've played pcs on and off for about 11 yrs Favorite system: 5e, though I love pathfinder 1.0 and rifts Questions/comments: is your pitch the actual campaign? A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): As many people awakened that day, the horrors in front of their cots were realized. The seemingly endless height of this tower gave way to only distant rainclouds in the storm fathoms beneath. With no walls to protect them beneath, people would fall through to whatever was down there.  So frantically the ones who haven't Fallen off the edge of their floor search their bedside for clues, finding little, polite notes to discourage from escape. How will these tower prisoners survive?
Pronouns: she/he Age: 25 Roleplaying experience:  I've never played a TTRPG before but I have loads with MMORPGS and am very comfortable with rping from a history of creative writing (tried writing a simple character backstory and it turned into the starts of a novel), theatre and performing in general. Favourite System: we shall see!  Questions/comments:   how long does your campaign sessions usually run? I'm in NST, so working out a good time with the rest of the world is usually an interesting endeavor.  A simple campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines):  I assume this is sorta a quick character backstory? Every night, their faces flash through memory. The cruelty that their hands enacted upon you can still be felt. The eyes of those close to you who gave everything to ensure that you got out alive. You can't escape them. To quell the fear, you seek out the dark things that hide in the shadows that seek to hurt the innocent in hopes of making the world around you a little safer for the daughter you have been searching for over the last year. You are seeking those who would aid in this search, as well as perhaps bring a little light to your shadow touched life.
Pronouns: He/him/they Age: 26 Roleplaying Experience: played through LMoP, DMd a Curse of Strahd campaign, am DMing one blades in the dark campaign. In total been playing TTRPGs consistently for around 2 years.  Favorite System: Blades seems more streamlined, 5e seems more detailed. Haven't tried other systems but I'm willing to.  Questions/Comments: how long would you expect a session to be, and how long do you expect a campaign to last?  A simple campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): The Drow have been growing more and more aggressive lately. Once seen only rarely, nighttime attacks have become a weekly occurrence these past few months. The attacks themselves are haphazard, unorganized, with their targets being supplies of food or simple weapons. Captured prisoners speak of something in the deep, something growing strong in the dark forcing the denizens of the underdark to flee upwards or fall. Your concern, for now, is claiming the bounty on the Drow raiders, who are believed to be hiding just beneath the surface in the caves of Wyvern Bluff. 5e, start at 3rd level, looking for an RP and story focused group.

@Kendra: "will this be role play heavy?" Short answer: yes, very much so. Longer answer: In the games I prefer, the only reason for players to break character is when someone asks them to, like the GM calling for a roll. That's resolved in seconds, then we slip back into the fiction. In-character 90+% of the time. @Dr. Drugs: "is your pitch the actual campaign?" I'd suggest you read the post again in search of your answer. @Ellen: "how long does your campaign sessions usually run?" 3-4 hours. Yeah, NZ TZ is rough. So roughly 1-5pm for you? @Colton: "how long would you expect a session to be, and how long do you expect a campaign to last?" 3-4 hours per session & I'm aiming for 6-10 sessions and then we decide whether to continue.

Pronouns: He/She Age: 23 Available: M, Th, UTC-6 evenings Roleplay Experience: I've got a good well-rounded experience with roleplaying! I started through text but eventually evolved into a competent roleplayer who loves getting into character. Now I have like 7+ years of tabletop experience and I still love it! Favorite system: D&D 5e Questions/Comments: I really love the vibe your putting together and hope you get a good group regardless! A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): There is a town that time forgot. People who never leave and seem to love when outsiders come to visit. They have a wonderful religion based on trust and encourage others to carry it out once they leave. Soon that religion spreads and soon...another similar town appears. Then another. Another.  These mysterious out of place societies keep popping up without warning. Someone should probably check in on that right? Hopefully, the people who form these towns have the best intentions at heart...right?
I'll continue to accept applicants for 2 more days. Thank you to those who have applied so far. I've begun to contact people to arrange voice chats and see if we gel. We should be able to have our session 0 in the coming week.
Pronouns: he but I dont care what you use Age: 22 Available: M,Tu,W are all after 2 PST and Thur, Fri, Sat, and Sunday are open at any time Roleplay Experience: I have played DnD with a close group for a while now and feel that im fairly good at roleplaying Favorite system: TBD as most of what we had was 5E but heavily homebrewed by my DM Questions/comments: I can roleplay fairly well but may be slow on puzzles and the like. I can make a serious character or something light hearted and fun A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): Light Hearted: As the town bustled with life in anticipation for the towns 100th harvest festival the town was covered in decoration ranging from flowers rivaling rainbows in their diversity in color too the smell of sweet honey apples to the smell of a feast rivaling a kings table; but one attraction draws all eyes. A simple ornate crown covered in jewels that is set to be crowned on that years harvest queen...unless a group of adventures feels that they intend to get it by honest or ill means
Pronouns: My pronouns are he/him. Age: I am old. Available:   I am free on Mondays and Wednesdays depending on what you mean by evening. Roleplay Experience: I've been playing rpg's since the beginning of the hobby's existence. I have been part of an ongoing D&D campaign for some 30 years now in which rp is the main emphasis. Favorite system: Setting is more important than system to me but if I have to choose probably either AD&D or CP 2020. Questions/comments: I have none at this point in time. A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): The old standby works for me. The party faces an imminent, or perhaps already arrived, evil. As an alternative, they could be rebelling against an established evil. For something different, I've always wanted to try a campaign based in either an old west type setting or a big city where the party serves in some sort of a law enforcement capacity. Or it can be a combination somehow of both pitches. Thanks for your consideration.
Pronouns: he/him Age: 23 Available: Weekends and weekday evenings Roleplay Experience: 2 campaigns and a fair bit of improv Favorite system: 5e Questions/comments: n/a A sample campaign pitch to demonstrate your style (in only a few lines): If you think a bull in a china shop is bad, wait until you see a dragon in a city. I was staying at an inn, well, behind an inn—in the stables if you must know—when it happened.   I was lucky, the goats sensed the creature before the people did. By the time its flames were licking up the city streets, I was already on a hill outside the walls—ready to start my new life as a goatherd.
