Hey world. I'm looking to get a game going with a group of players who enjoy themselves and want to come back week after week for laughter, creativity, adventure and escape. Whether you're older like I am and played the game years ago and are wondering what this whole 5E thing is or you're new to the game and have only heard about it through a stream like Critical Role but you've been dying for a chance to play yourself, I'd be honored to be your DM. What's the Ember King? The Ember King is a one-shot adventure intended to introduce characters to the Feywild - a plane of existence that mirrors the natural world, but is suffused with magic and whimsy. It is the home to faeries, as well as dryads, satyrs, centaurs, and unicorns but also some malevolent beings. This adventure is meant to create an intro that can take the players on into the longer Wild Beyond the Witchlight (WBW) campaign. The Ember King is designed for Level 1 characters. The full WBW campaign could take you up another 8 levels or so and run for several months. From the official description: The
Tavern of the Ember King appears once a year during the Feast of the Moon in an alleyway in Waterdeep.
For new Feywild explorers, the benevolent Ember King offers advice and their
first adventure in exchange for the tale of their exploits. Once agreed, the
now pixie-sized party finds themselves at the top of the tavern and has one
hour to find their way to the bottom. (Yes, this has a bit of a "Honey, I shrunk the Adventurers!" theme to it.) The original module is listed as a two-hour adventure for level one characters. This session will run longer. I added some new spaces to the original content and brought in additional fey creatures for the players to interact with. D epending on how much the
character’s want to explore, the game could carry over into another session. It will
be heavily based in role play and problem solving rather than combat. (This is not be compliant with Adventurer's League rules in order to give maximum flexibility to new players.) My intent is to use this one-shot adventure to recruit a group of like-minded players who want to continue with the Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign. It's a way for you to try out my style as a DM and for me to audition players. There is not a charge to play, because I've only DMed on Roll 20 a little bit, and sessions may not run seamlessly. More experienced players are welcome, so long as they are okay helping new players learn the game. This would be an inclusive table (LGBTQIA friendly), but I am looking for 18 and over. I don't intend to have a lot of adult content, but I don't want adult to feel like they have to censor themselves. My asks are that you have a good internet connection, speak English fluently, treat other players with respect and bring energy and creativity. Intended format would be Roll20 with Discord for voice (and possibly video if that works for all party members). Looking to run this for the first time Tuesday evening, November 30th at 6:30 pm US central time (UTC - 6). If what I've described appeals to you, but that day and time don't work, let me know. I may repeat this a couple of times to find a full party for going forward with WBW and I can also flex the start time an hour or so. A couple of notes about character creation: This is for level one characters. Standard array or point buy for ability scores. I prefer published content for race, class, subclass, etc. but any of the variants in Tasha's or other content are acceptable. (Don't worry if you don't know what all this means. If you're new, I can explain.) I do ask that you do not choose a race that has flight. It would make a lot of the challenges of this module too easy to overcome. Also, no evil-aligned characters. (That doesn't mean you can't be a bit sketchy.) If you're interested, post 1) your name (this can be your Roll20 user name - I'm Psyborg on here, but David in reality), 2) preferred pronouns, 3) level of experience with D&D, 4) whether you're interested in a longer Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign, 5) your location or time zone and 6) character concept if you have one. Critical Role disclaimer: If your introduction to D&D was through the Critical Role stream or podcast, keep in mind those people are long-time friends and players who happen to be professional voice actors . Unless you also are professional actors or improv comedians, a real life game is not likely going to be like one of their sessions (that's why they're making millions playing a game and you're not!). Still, there is a reason millions of people love this game and you will be the one playing rather than watching! More about me: I played D&D long ago in the 80's, usually DMing for my friends around a table in a basement like the kids in Stranger Things. In fact, I could have been one of those guys... well except for that part about being sucked into alternate dimensions and battling monsters. After college, I set the game aside for a long time. A few years back, my kids (teenagers at the time) were interested in learning the game and that led to me getting back in the hobby. Then COVID hit. I found some great groups and played online during the shutdown and had some wonderful experiences, but sometimes real life happens and groups dissolve. I haven't always been able to find the kind of games I wanted to be a part of, so I decided to DM again and try and create them.
