What you want to do is think about genres you are interested in. Do you like super heroes? Sci-fi fiction? Horror? Slice of life anime? That's what I mean. Since there is almost literally a game for every interest, I find it can sometimes be best (though difficult) to direct new players that way, since I disagree that D&D and Pathfinder are beginner friendly nor do the best job of showcasing the hobby. Rather, they showcase one facet of the hobby, one play style, one style of game rules, and one kind of game (not a bad thing, just limiting and specific). I've seen a lot of players come to D&D, only to end up playing modern horror games, sci-fi, and other kinds of game that better match their interests, mistakingly thinking that D&D was the only kind of game available.
