[LFG][5e][FREE]Always wanted to try D&D but didn't know where to start or like helping brand new players? Look inside

First about myself, I am a 51 yr old experienced DM player having played and DMed countless campaigns. Both tabletop and online I have over 300+ playing on Rol20 I want to DM a campaign for new players that are either new to Roll20 and want to try playing online or new to D&D completely and don't know where to start. There are a lot of interested players out there that don't know how to get started with role playing games or want to play online but don't know anything about Roll20. Well that's where I come in, I have been playing since the 80s and know a lot of the rules and details of the game. I am looking for somewhat outgoing players that aren't afraid of a little role playing, that's the fun of the game. However I am not looking for someone to take over the party or try to be the leader.  I want the sessions to be fun and engaging more than efficient, if that makes sense. I would be willing to take lightly experienced players but this is a LEARNING campaign so I don't expect players to know what spells do or even how to cast them, what dice to roll etc. I think part of the fun of a new player campaign is all the mistakes that can be made and living through them. Basic understanding of how D&D works would be helpful once we get started. Reading the players handbook is a good place to start. Requirements: Good attitude, willingness to learn, some basic understanding of role playing games (search critical role on youtube for some ideas) You would need some way of reading the basic rules for 5e, so either owning the hard copy of the players handbook, or finding it online etc. You would need a desktop or laptop capable of running Roll20, I assume you have that because you are here poking around the forums A headset/earbuds and mic Your own snacks. Sorry I can't fax them to you Logistics: We would use Roll20 and discord to play (camera optional), voice required obviously The sessions would be twice a month on a weeknight from 7-10 or 8-11 central time.  Setting: I like 5e and the modules and I like playing on Roll20, I tend to take existing modules and embelish them, I don't change rules, but I may add characters, places, plot points etc.  My strong suit is developing scenarios, locations, characters and 5e modules are very light on background usually in the middle of the module. There are big "sandboxes" that DMs are expected to flesh out. I own several modules here on Roll20 so I would pick something as a good starting point or flesh something out If you have experience with any 5e module please let me know in the comments to help me decide. Characters: We could use session 1 as the place to help people decide what characters they want to play. Some basic knowledge of fantasy characters is helpful, Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, Vox Machina are great places to start.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. I've been wanting to get involved in a semi regular online 5e game, but did not know where / how to start. I've got a basic knowledge of the game, but have never been a PC. And wouldn't know where to start in an online setting. I have a few ideas for characters, but nothing concrete, and would be very willing to play the "needed" or missing role if need be.
Hello Cordell, my friend and I have been looking for our first campaign and have a good idea of the characters we would roleplay. We have watched campaigns from Dimension 20 and Critical Role, and have purchased the rulebook, so our knowledge is rough at best. We are eager to learn and will try our best to make it as fun as it can be.

Hello, So a bit about myself as well, I'm 31M and for the past... Uh, forever (seriously like 20yrs or so) I've been a big fan of various CRPGs (the most notable regarding 5e would be Solasta I think, it seems to be quite faithful to its rules) and wanted to get into it but couldn't quite figure out how or where to start. That's why this post is exactly what I've been looking for, I'm eager to get into it and learn alongside others and, most importantly, have fun playing 5e ! I do own the PHB and watched a lot of Critical Role on top of my CRPG experiences, so I think I mostly know how combat mechanics, skill checks and the like work, how to roll dices on roll20 etc (I played a bit on free modules by myself to see how it works) but my 'not-quite-so-nooby' knowledge pretty much ends there. EDIT : I have a few ideas for character concepts in the back of my head but I'm ready to fill-in if the group needs me to.

Hello, my name is zach and ive been looking everywhere for a game that might fit my schedule. im mainly available mon-wens later in the afternoon/night or early morning as i work overnights.  i am 27 and ive been playing 5e for about 6 years now. i have a hard copy of the core rulebook and many of the others as pdf. i enjoy both roleplay and combat and everything in between. i have a character ive been watning to run for awhile now just havent been able to find a game to play. i have both roll20 (obviously) and discord ready to use and should be available at the times you discribed above if they happen to be mon-wed night.
thanks for the replies everyone I am excited to start talking about this. I will wait a few more days to see who else replies, in the mean time does anyone have any experience with actual 5e modules? I am curious because I want to choose a setting that people have no idea about
Personally the only one I 'really' know is called "Master's Vault" because I used it (it's free) when testing out how things worked here. Aside from that I know about Descent into Avernus (it's been a while though) because Youtube but that's pretty much it. Ah, and color me excited to start talking about this as well.
also what weekday works best for everyone?
Only module I'm strongly familiar with is Lost Mines of Phandelver. Currently running my 11 and 13 year old neices through that one. I'm very flexible with weekdays. Would prefer any day Monday to Thursday. Let me know if I can help with any non-narrative related things. Happy to assist!
For me the best one would be wednesday but I can make it work on other days. To be honest the only day I'd rather not play on if possible is friday, I *can* still make it (especially since this is only a twice a month thing as opposed to every week) if everyone else wants to but that just doesn't work ideally well for me.
while we are waiting to see who else might join, heres how you can get started. Get a general idea of what class and race you might want to play dont worry about picking something the party "needs" I can make adjustments as needed. I want you to enjoy the character Also start thinking of the background you might want just google 5e backgrounds to get a rough idea and then start to flesh it out a bit more, this will be important later.

i have a pretty good idea of what i want to run. is there anything thats not allowed? what i have is from the books so no homebrew stuff. and monday-wed afternoon/night works for me
I'm definitely interested, I am new to TTRPG but have always wanted to find a group that would be willing to take the time to help get my feet wet, as its a bit daunting, and hard to find a group willing to take that time.  I am CST timezone, and availability is best Monday and Tuesday.
Ok I think we have our group I am going to setup a discord server, I have another person coming that is not part of this thread as well. Then we can start to talk about it all over there. Im excited to start planning.  Watch for a private message with the discord info
Darn I was too slow :(  If you or a friend or whatever are to do another group, please keep me in mind
ok Ive sent out discord invites, If you dont join within a few days I will know you arent interested and will try to find replacements, if you are new to this post and still want in, add your name below there may be a spot if someone cant make it etc
Just wanted to throw my name in the hat incase a spot opens.
Hello, my name is Jessica  I am 25 years old  I have no experience in d n d have no idea how to start all I do know is that I create a character from a certain class and go by the rule book . My brothers and I were close growing up, use to play with his friends but we lost touch after a accident in the family and never spoken since. I always wanted to play. I have no books, no dice pretty much nothing. And have no one to help me start. All I know no one wants to play with an un experience player but I am willing to sit down and learn.  I already have many characters in mind I want to try out and my schedule is pretty much open a lot (I work from home)  That’s about it, I’ve been looking for a group for over two years and I am running out of luck with it. Thank you
I would also like play if there are any openings.  I have been wanting to play for a while now and this sounds like a good time!
Do you only play in 5E format? I would prefer to stay on 4E for the moment since thats what im the most familiar with mechanically. And i want to try avoiding more confusion in my other 2 groups since im still new to this kind of community and play. So CORDELL .M since you messaged me is that something ur willing to do or have a opening with a 4e group your DMing?
sorry everyone the group is full for now but if someone quits I will reach out and yes we only play 5e
