Hyperlink Between Journal Handouts in Different Folders

I am planning on running a campaign that has a lot of moving parts and as part of my prep, I have been setting up my Journal page with multiple folders and subfolders to assist with tracking information, characters, etc. However for the session to session work, I try to set up a GM Notes folder that I will track the group's progress / potential next encounter in. The tool that makes this all work is allowing me to hyperlink between handouts, which is where I place my notes for me to track campaign details. The issue that I am running into is that the hyperlink tool does not allow me to link between handouts that are in different folders. I tested this by hyperlinking a handout by typing in [Handout Name] that is in a series of folders and subfolders other than where I am hyperlinking from, which did not correctly link to the handout I wanted. When I moved the handout up and out of the folders, the hyperlink worked correctly. Do I need to add additional information into the [Handout Name] hyperlink to get Roll20 to track the correct handout or is that not an option? Thanks!

I have never run into this problem. When producing a module, referenced handouts and characters are almost always in subfolders, sometimes 2-3 deep. Can you give exact reproduction steps to see if I or others can repeat what you are experiencing?

Are you using the same name for handouts in different places? Normally, roll20 takes no notice of your folder structure, and will link to handouts irrespective if where they are. But if you are using the same name for handouts in different places, it will have difficulty connecting to the correct one, and folders might be relevant there.

However that was the first attempt to solve this issue. I had named every handout under a subfolder as "Description" but then tried to rename the handouts to their specific location or activity name but came up with the same results. keithcurtis said: I have never run into this problem. I am running my Star Wars Edge of the Empire campaign through the&nbsp;Roll20 FFG Star Wars API-Compatible Character Sheet (<a href="https://github.com/Angarl/Roll20_StarWars" rel="nofollow">https://github.com/Angarl/Roll20_StarWars</a>). My process of creating my Journal Folders and Handouts is by going to the Journal tab, clicking +Add in the upper right of the menu and selecting Add Folder. Once that folder is created, I right click the folder and select "Add Subfolder" until I reach the desired level of sorting information. Then I right click the subfolder and select "Add Handout." After creating the needed Handouts, I try to add the hyperlinks using the [Hyperlink] text which is where the issue begins. I am always directed to an error page unless the hyperlinked handout is moved out of its subfolders and into the main Journal area.

It sounds like you use a similar process to me when creating handouts.&nbsp; I would say to rename everything to have unique names.&nbsp; The links don't care where the handout is located, because it isn't treated like a file system path.&nbsp; The link mechanic is only looking for that specific name to grab onto.&nbsp; This also means that you can't have shared names between handouts and character sheets, because they are both journal entities that can be linked by name. Basically, rename everything so that every entity in the journal has a unique name, and your problem will most likely go away.&nbsp; I would also recommend creating a table of contents or index handout, and then archiving everything that isn't real commonly accessed.&nbsp; This cuts down on clutter in the journal, and the archived handouts will pull up from links just fine.

Kraynic as usual has the right of it. That duplicate naming of every handout is likely the missing detail from the repro steps you listed.&nbsp;
