Grouped Tokens as the default token for a character/NPC

I am currently having trouble making a space campaign. I have art assets purchased for a Ship and a shield, and what I would like to do is create a character token that drops with the Ship and Shield grouped together and placed as the default token, but currently any attempts to make a grouped token the default character token results in just the top-layered object being selected and copied. Can we make such tokens currently or is this a feature that should be added? In a perfect world this would go as far as being able to set attributes on both grouped tokens, I.e the ship has a health bar and the shield has a health bar, so that the shield can be deleted once reduced to 0 leaving the ship in tact.  I feel like this could have alot of uses beyond what I'm describing here, it's just what would be awesome for my current campaign.
I don't think you can set a group as the default, but you could make a blank page to hold your library of tokens. It doesn't totally get you there, but it's probably the closest thing today. I do this even for d&d where I want to grab all of the tokens easily for the party or for common NPCs/villains, it's easy to copy/paste them into new pages as needed (instead of dragging the sheet onto the vtt).
