Swords and Wizardry, anyone?

Hi all. I'm a long-time PbP GM looking to make the jump to Roll20. I favor older versions of D&D, and lately, I've been very interested in getting a game of Swords and Wizardry together. S&W has some excellent adventures (including the famed Rappan Athuk) and supplemental material, but the actual rules are free as a PDF. There's an SRD, too. I'm looking to run a weekly game from 6 - 9 pm PST. Thursdays seem like a great day to me, but I could make Tuesday or Wednesday work. I think the game's focus would be on dungeon crawls and exploration, but my goal would be to create a sandbox game using the Borderlands Provinces setting from Frog God Games. There would always be a few different things you could do, and it would be up to the group to decide what sort of challenges they'd want to face. Rappan Athuk is in the area, but the nature of that dungeon allows a group to delve in, grab some treasure, and (assuming they survive) come back when they feel ready. Here's the catch (there's always a catch!): I'm new to Roll20 and rusty at live games. I'm also new to Swords and Wizardry. There will be some bumps as I get through the learning curve, and I will need you to be patient with me. Anyone interested?

Loosely / possibly interesting. Me and another player who I met thru Roll20 (David), have been talking about looking for a game in B/X or AD&D, and this could be it. Swords & Wizardry is pretty close to AD&D 1st edition I think. Also separately, DM Steve and I have been discussing starting a BFRPG campaign, however Steve is very dedicated to playing it with Basic Fantasy RPG rule set, he wouldn't want to pivot over to S&W. Even tho they are similar clones, he just really wants to specifically use BFRPG (Free PDF or $5 print copy) and the Supplements/modules from that.  I'm open to get into 1 of these games, and have it be on Tuesday (or maybe Thursday).  The times you listed are fine for me. I'm in Central time FYI.  I have a lot of experience with setting up Roll20. I've never played Rapaan Athuk.  Not worried at all about you being rusty at DM'ing or new at Roll20. We just go patiently, steadily, learn as we go along. So if you want to recruit me, or me & David, for your S&W game idea, that could work. Alternately if you feel interested in playing BFRPG then I can show you to the thread with Steve and you could look at playing & rotating DM's with us.
I actually love BFRPG and I play it with my kids. I have every BFRPG print product available. If I were going to go with a different system, that would be it.  That being said, I would like to see what kind of interest I can get in S&W before jumping systems. I agree with your statement about it being close to AD&D in feel, and that's what I'm going for. I also like that the whole system is contained in one book instead of scattered across different supplements.  All this being said, I'd happily invite both of you to the game.
This sounds right up my alley, but may have just gotten in another game. Will keep you posted for sure.
Sounds good @Aarron G, just let me know.
I'm better with Thursday as well but Tuesday could work if it means we get Gold and his friend in.
Right now I have interest levels like this: Gold: possibly interested Gold's Friend David: Unknown Aaron G: interested if Gold and friend can join And I have days like this: Weekly, Tuesdays or Thursdays, 6 - 9 PM PST Sound about right? We've still got plenty of time for some interested players to find us. I think we can roll with anything from 3 to 6 players
Any updates?
I would be interested in this game if still considering more players. I have been playing 5e for past 3 years, but grew up on DnD and ADnD and this game peeked my interest. I am available most days after 5pm PST except Wed, Fri, and some Tuesdays
Also interested if there is room for one more
Now we're talking!

I'm still down for S&W on these days/times. In fact it's getting to be just about that Thursday time now, or soon. Matt W said: Weekly, Tuesdays or Thursdays, 6 - 9 PM PST

I hope this works out. And for what its worth, I have a good amount of experience DMing on roll20 so can help out.
Wow! I'd just about given up on this game due to the lack of response in this forum but this is great! I'm absolutely still down to run a weekly game. It sounds like Thursday works for most, yeah? 6pm to 9pm PST?

I've gone in and played with the UI a bit and it seems pretty straightforward to add maps and use the fog of war but I wasn't able to mock having actual players in there, which will probably change a few things.  TLDR version, I appreciate the offer to help and everyone's patience! I'll need both.
As far as the adventure goes, I'm thinking of shifting my idea a bit. I want to keep the campaign in the Lost Lands setting, but I'm thinking of starting you off in the city of Endhome now. From there, you should be able to find whatever adventure calls to you and there will be a lot of options (like... a lot). That probably doesn't mean anything unless you're familiar with the Lost Lands, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
Going to work on getting a game board up and sending out invites this weekend. I also invited a friend to the game so we might have a pretty decent group going.
Greetings, I'm a bit newer to RPGs but would love to learn the system and join the group if there is space. I'm familiar with 5e and a little Pathfinder.
Alright, five invites sent! Let me know if you posted interest and didn't get an invite.
Gold, did your friend still want to play? If so, have him post to this thread and I'll send him an invite.
Hi there! Matt let me know y'all are starting a game up - I'd love to join!
Invite sent, Aramis!
Quick update on the game for the forum: this campaign is starting TOMORROW (June 9th) at 6pm PST. It will run weekly on Thursdays.  If there are any players out there looking for some OSR adventure, I can take one or two more.  Post here or PM me if you're interested. We've got experienced players, beginning players, and those with and without OSR experience, so all are welcome.  Tomorrow's game is Session Zero (making characters). We'll start the actual play the following week, literally at the door to a dungeon.
Hello Matt W. Welcome to Roll20; I discovered Roll20 a few months ago and may never roll physical dice again! I purchased and have read the Complete Rulebook as written by Matthew Finch and Swords and Wizardry is a fantastic system to use. In addition to downloading Swords & Wizardry for free, prospective players can also buy a printed copy of “White Box” by Charlie Manson on Amazon for only $4.30. Sorry I can't join your game as I'm a bit busy with other things, but I'm sure you can find a number of players out there especially if you put your up on the Listings Directory. I (and I'm sure most other Roll20 users) never look at these forums. I only found out about your post because my friend Gold told me about it.   Also, today when I go to “Games” and “Player Directory” and search for Swords and Wizardry and I see 18 people there that are currently looking to play this game; perhaps send them a message.  Roll20 will automatically remove people from the Player Directory if they don't update it every two months or so, these players are likely people that have actively keep their profiles current (which also lends itself to a reason to keep your profile current and enter some info about yourself; I joined a game because a GM personally sent me a message about it after reading my profile).   Perhaps more importantly is get your game listed in the Games Directory so that if someone goes to “games”; “Join a Game” and selects “Swords and Wizardry”, your game will pop up.   Have a great time tonight everyone!
Thanks for the tips!
