Tangents and digressions

Just read this article on combat and I'm very interested to hear your thoughts!
I agree that every situation does NOT need a dice roll to happen. I agree with what he says that not every encounter has to be resolved with combat. That's been the case since 1st ed. I don't know if I'd get rid of initiative though. Even seasoned veterans, like Chris Perkins, use an initiative order for exploration and non-combat actions. I disagree with him on morale checks. I think they should bring back. Most of this guy's arguments seem to be based on his interpretation of "advice". So... he's just being a typical DM/GM. =-) I really hope this guy wasn't dissing our military by saying they don't work. Some of those guys don't come home alive for their "work". He pretends to be a drill sgt and then says don't call me sir I work for a living. Again I hope this wasn't his intent.

Generally, addressing an NCO as "Sir" is incorrect, and the almost universal response to such an address is "Don't call me sir, I work for a living." It's a trope that's in pretty much every "new recruit in the military" drill sergeant scene. ( link ) Hell, my mom even said to her kids "don't call me ma'am - my husband works for a living." (She was a Navy wife.)
Ok. I'm not going to read that whole thing. I'll take your word for it.I'm surrounded by Marines (live next to Camp LaJeune) so I can't help but be interested in their well being. Pretty much all the men in my family have been in one branch in the military and none of them have used this figure of speech. So I didn't realize it was some kind of military joke.

Yah I don't get the consistency of the forums here. Sometimes when I link a youtube video it doesn't imbed the player. Then other times it does even though I post it the same way. [Sorry off-topic]
Wow~! Just a few thoughts 1. Initiative- For the most part it should be implemented for the order of actions. 2. A DM adding additional components to a scene or encounter, what ever the Angry Dm wants to call them. Should be implemented as long as its not over powering for the pc's every time. 3. Morale Checks- I loved them in 1st edition. 1-30 Hostile Immediate Action 40-60 uninterested unconcern 61-100 Friendly. Something like that. As later D&D versions came around skills came about and the moral check went to the wayside. The DM in my opinion has the option to roll a moral check, or not, Or decide to take hostage for means of escape. As long as the Dm doesn't hack to much, and stays within core mechanics of the game its fine. A DM should have free reign to change certain scene's components for an interesting game. I do like Chris Perkins " The Lazy Dungeon Master" it had some points the Angry DM made in those article's in the book.
