Terra Nova was maturing at long last, but at a terrible cost." - Nicosa Renault Heavy Gear  - Terra Nova (A Brief History) It is the Terra Novan Year 1937, and war is raging.  Thor Hutchison, the leader of the Revisionist Church, has been assassinated. Fifteen cycles of suspicion and tension finally come to a head as the planet of Terra Nova explodes into the Interpolar War. But no one anticipates just how costly this war will become.    The CNCS city of Ashington on the southern border of  the United Mercantile Federation is defended by her local heroes,  Colonel Felicity Parx and the 109th Heavy Gear Regiment, the 'Lionhearts'. The first weeks of the war have been quiet on this front, as the South elsewhere has mostly been on the defensive, with Northern forces driving into Southern territory in the Eastern Sun Emirates, and (less successfully) the Mekong Dominion.  But out in the Badlands of the Western Desert, a storm is approaching. Aboard the AST Land Cruiser 'Imperatrice' is Commander Henri Mikashi and his elite 2nd Légion Noire Regiment 'The Damned', with orders to secure Ashington region and the vast mineral riches of the Southern Spur... However, an economic collapse forced the UEG government to abandon Terra Nova and all its other colonies centuries ago, leaving Terra Nova in a dark age.  Eventually, City-states rose from the ashes and either through treaties or tyranny, united to form national unions called Leagues. These Leagues would in turn ally, either peacefully or forcibly, to form the superpower blocs that dominate the temperate southern and northern hemispheres of the planet. The planet's geography is primarily land containing deep underground water reserves, but there are few large bodies of open water, and no oceans. The planet has its own ecosystem of plants and animals, though most animals are reptilian in nature, such as the bison-like Barnaby used as livestock, and the prolific Hopper which is the equivalent of Earth's rabbit. The single dominant land feature is a massive mineral rich, hot, desert belt around the equator of the world known as the Badlands. This territory is not dominated by any one political group, is considered open territory to everyone, and contains many bandit groups known as Rovers. Most people live in the northern or southern polar regions where temperatures are more acceptable to human life, and other terrain types such as forests, grasslands, swamps and jungles can be found. Small ice caps with arctic conditions and glaciers are found on the true north and true south poles. One of the most popular weapon systems of the various groups on Terra Nova are the machines known as Heavy Gears . They are 3.7m to 5.5 m bipedal, armored, single occupancy military combat units. The Gears are less heavily armed and armored than main battle tanks used by the Terra Nova armies. However, the Gears provide a mix of capabilities that prove highly effective in maneuver warfare. Several major wars have taken place over time, including the War of the Alliance. Twenty years ago  Earth's dictatorial government, the New Earth Coalition, attempted to re-take its former colonies by force using its own war machines of hover tanks and armies of purple skinned GREL super soldiers (Genetically Recombinant Expeditionary Legionaries). In this war both the North and the South cooperated to fight off the Colonial Expeditionary Force, some of which was abandoned on the planet and formed the Port Arthur city-state. As of 6132 AD (TN 1936, local calendar) immediately prior to the outbreak of war, the  Confederated Northern City-States  (CNCS) and the  Allied Southern Territories  (AST) were recovering and rebuilding from the War of the Alliance. Despite a common enemy the polar superpowers have great fear and animosity for each other, while the independent City-States of the Badlands simply try to survive the crossfire.

Heavy Gear Regiments The PCs are members of 3rd Section, 2nd Company 109th Gear Regiment 'Lionhearts' initially training at the Alpha Proving Ground near Ashington, overseen by the Regiment's Colonel Felicity Parx, then deployed to Forward Base Lima, replacing 4th Section. The 109th Regiment is a Northern Guard regiment . But with the outbreak of the war all UMF and other CNCS forces include the Ashington Royals are integrated into the Northern Guard . The Grand Marshall of the Northern Guard, Victoria Edden -Smythe , is from the Asington area in the UMF  (though born/raised in Swanscombe) and she was once Colonel of the Lionhearts , which adds to the prestige of the Regiment . 20 years ago your current Colonel , Felicity Parx , served under Edden -Smythe as a Lieutenant during the defence of Ashington in the War of the Alliance (1913-17) . There are rumours she literally 'served under her ' . >:) Following the 5th Battle of Ashington in 1917, Edden-Smythe was promoted to General in the Northern Guard. After the end of the War of the Alliance, in TN 1918 she was appointed Grand Marshall of the Northern Guard by President Breslau, the position she still holds today. Born in Swanscombe in 1877, Edden-Smythe had a troubled childhood. She was six when her father was imprisoned for involvement in a failed uprising against the Swanscombe Matriarchy. Following her expulsion from Swanscombe University in 1902, she moved to Ashington and in 1903 joined the Northern Guard, swiftly rising through the ranks to Colonel of the 109th, then ultimately Grand Marshall. She is a fierce convert from Jerusalemism to Sorrento Revisionism, and was close to Second Follower Thor Hutchison before his assassination.  10/Wi/37. At maximum strength there are 5 Gears per Section, 240 in the Regiment. Currently (Winter 1937) most Sections of the 109th are somewhat undermanned, with an average 7.5 Gears per Section, 30 per Company, 120 across the Regiment. Most of the Gears are Hunters, with smaller numbers of Cheeths & Grizzlies. A small number of Jaguar gears have recently been arriving to bolster the units. Confederated Northern City-States [ edit ] The political situation on Terra Nova has three major nations of the north polar region banding together to form their alliance called the Confederated Northern City-States to oppose the Allied Southern Territories from the south pole. Northern Light Confederacy [ edit ] A large nation known for its devotion to the major religion of Sorrento Revisionism based on the teachings of an early wandering desert colonist prophet, Sorrento Revisionism is a sect that preaches conservatism, and the necessary use of force to make the world a better place. They are most often motivated to conflict by that reason, and even incorporate chaplains into military units. United Mercantile Federation [ edit ] An industrial power that puts a price on everything, including buying and selling votes in their political system, and has a keen interest in exploiting the untapped resources buried in the sand and rock of the Badlands. Western Frontier Protectorate [ edit ] A region of open plains and ranching that promote family, hard work, and patriotism by military service. Indeed, the WFP requires a person to be a reservist in the Protectorate armed forces in order to be elected to high office, and only military veterans may vote. Allied Southern Territories [ edit ] The south pole of Terra Nova likewise has an overall political grouping known as the Allied Southern Territories. Unlike the three nations forming the CNCS, which are generally on an equal level with one another politically, the Southern Republic dominates over the other three southern nations in order to field the strength necessary to meet Northern aggressive policies towards them. Southern Republic [ edit ] The real power of the southern pole. They are the largest nation on the planet with both territory and population, and dominate the other southern nations by military force if necessary. They are openly free with many individual rights of expression, a high level of art and culture, and legalised vices, but with the major exception of freedom for political dissent. The government is intolerant of dissent and opposition groups, and employs secret police. Prisoners often form poorly trained and equipped military units. Mekong Dominion [ edit ] A nation of manufacturing, money lending, and corporations as government. They are also minimally armed, using their small military as a dual purpose police force and often hires outside forces to supplement their own when necessary. Humanist Alliance [ edit ] This nation uses science and technology to structure their society in an attempt to create harmony and utopia. This ideal has almost attained religious status in their people. They place citizens into castes based on aptitude testing and are highly educated at all levels. Research and development, and an efficient skilled work force are some of their greatest assets. Eastern Sun Emirates [ edit ] A fractured nation of individual City-States that are almost nations unto themselves. They are led by hereditary monarchs known as Emirs who rule over their common citizens with no middle class in between. Minor powers on Terra Nova [ edit ] Along with the major polar regions, several smaller factions exist on Terra Nova. Peace River [ edit ] An independent city state in the Badlands of Terra Nova. They are an industrial nation capable of sophisticated, but practical manufacturing. This nation is home to Paxton Arms, one of the few independent corporations outside the two polar regions to build military hardware, including Heavy Gears of their own design. Peace River is the largest independent nation in the Badlands. The Peace River military also tries its best to defend other bandland nations from encroachments by either polar League, but is often stretched thin to cover such a vast area. Their other major conflicts involve Rovers, the bandits of the Badlands. Port Arthur [ edit ] The remnants of the failed expeditionary army sent by Earth to reconquer Terra Nova, Port Arthur was one of their primary staging bases in the Badlands. Over one-hundred thousand human officers and GREL (Genetically Recombinated Expeditionary Legionaries) super-soldiers were abandoned by the Earth fleet concentrated on Port Arthur. From here they have established a nation for themselves, and benefit from the high technology of the Colonial Expeditionary Force (CEF) hover tanks, and GREL infantry to safeguard their territory. Rovers and independents [ edit ] Most people in the Badlands owe their allegiance to no nation. They live as families, gangs, or individuals. Small facilities of human habitation known as Oasis Towers are spotted around the Badlands at any available surface, or shallow wells of water, and small-scale agriculture can even be attempted. However, most Badlanders make their living as miners or caravan traders. They ply back and forth between the polar regions and far flung industrial sites of the Badlands selling and buying goods. Rovers are the criminal element of the Badlands. They are groups of local outcasts, criminals escaping the law, deserters fleeing their homelands, simple runaways, or even hereditary rovers born to other rovers who live in the wilds of the badlands and prey on local trade caravans, independent miners, and homesteaders. They are a common problem in the lawless Badlands. Rather than work for their living, they take from others. Most Badlanders protect themselves in some fashion, though an unwritten code has developed over time where Rovers only take enough for themselves, and will not leave their victims destitute or without the supplies to survive. However, the cruelty and/or humanity of the Rover bands runs the full spectrum of decency. Famous NPCs OUR WISE NORTHERN LEADERS - CNCS Victoria Edden-Smythe The Grand Marshal of the CNCS, Victoria Edden-Smythe has led the North to war against the South. A devout Revisionist, she sees the South as responsible for the death of Second Follower Hutchison. She opted for war when it seemed the Mekong Dominion would side with the North, and now must deal with a bloody conflict. Married to Proconsul Lang Regina, the two women have separated due to personal, religious and political differences. Edden-Smythe is native to the United Mercantile Federation and few consider her a pawn of the historically dominant Northern Lights Confederacy. Lang Regina A hero of the War of the Alliance and the Proconsul of Fort Henry in the WFP, Lang Regina is rumoured to be unconvinced that the Interpolar War is in the best interests of the North or Terra Nova. A longtime friend of  Kenichi Tanaka,  Lord Chancellor of the ESE and a hero of the War of the Alliance. Solomon Davi  Secretary of Defense of the United Mercantile Federation, Solomon Davi assumed the position of interim Treasurer when Yves Banderas died. Davi is a consummate soldier and an ally of the conglomerate Northco. He is rumored to dislike Grand-Marshal Victoria Edden-Smythe, the overall Northern commander. He supports the war effort for the time being, however. DECEASED Thor Hutchison  The fiery leader of the Northern Revisionist Church, Hutchison was assassinated on live trideo by Northern Colonel Neel Garner Fulan. Most Northerners believed that this apparently senseless crime had to have been directed by their Southern enemies; when circumstantial evidence began to point this way, their fears seemed confirmed. For many Northerners, the Interpolar War exists to avenge Hutchison.  Yves Banderas  Treasurer of the United Mercantile Federation, Banderas was once a movie star. He dreamed of uniting the UMF and the Mekong Dominion into a financial super-alliance that would lead Terra Nova. This made him an easy dupe for Arron Logan’s deceptions, which led to global war. Banderas died when his personal jet was shot down, many assume by Southern stealth fighters. THEIR VILLAINOUS SOUTHERN TYRANTS - AST Jacques Molay The Lord Protector of the AST, Molay was once head of the dreaded Southern Republic Intelligence Directorate, and still holds sway there. Rumoured to be an enemy of Prime Minister deRouen. Louis Philippe deRouen  The ruthless Prime Minister of the Southern Republic, which dominates the AST. Father of  Louise deRouen, his only child.  Oliver Masao The mad Patriarch of the Eastern Sun Emirates, Masao is enchanted with bloodshed and has offered up his throne to his last living relative. This prompted massive slaughter among the Eastern aristocracy and led several Emirates to outright rebellion. He delights in the chaos of war, and seems unaware of the terrible price paid by his subjects and allies for his follies. Arron Logan The Taipan of the Mekong Development Corporation, Logan is utterly ruthless and is most directly responsible for the Interpolar War. Indeed, he led the North to believe that the Mekong Dominion would side with them in the case of a war, something that was far from true. The motives behind this grand deception are unclear but surely profit Logan, even though Northern assassins are now hunting him. Farzahd Hemami The Lord Chancellor of the Humanist Alliance. Kenichi Tanaka The Lord Chancellor of the ESE and a hero of the War of the Alliance, Tanaka is rumoured to share his former ally Lang Regina’s doubts about the Interpolar War. WHAT MAKES A MAN TURN NEUTRAL? THOSE UNTRUSTWORTHY BADLANDERS Milani DuBeau-Slovenski The beautiful Head Executive Officer of Paxton Arms, Milani has a reputation for utter ruthlessness. An important power behind the throne in Peace River, Milani’s main concern is to keep her corporation and city safe and profitable during the war.  Ernesto Jaxon The charismatic leader of the Badlands Revolutionary Front, Jaxon wishes to see the Badlands free of Northern and Southern domination (and of the corporations who serve as their proxies). He leads an ongoing rebellion in Lance Point and serves as figurehead of a loose coalition of revolutionaries stretching across the Badlands, including Peace River.  Colonel Proust One of 100,000 GREL supersoldiers abandoned by Earth after its abortive attempt to invade Terra Nova, Proust has become convinced that the GRELs must make their own destiny, as befits superior beings. Gathering other GRELs around himself, he has founded the New Human Republic, and embarked on a campaign in the Western Desert.  GREL

Recent Events 1936 SUMMER 18 Summer 1936: The CNCS declares war against the Southern Republic . Grand Marshal Edden-Smythe assumes her wartime powers of direct government, and confirms all current civilian authorities in their post for the duration. 19 Summer 1936: All three maglev lines are cut by the Northern and Southern  powers alike. The “White War” along the western fringe of the Great White Desert  hits full force as the Desert Wolves Nomads, New Human Republic (NHR), Arthurian Korps (PAK) and  Khayr ad-Din Army (KADA) all become involved in the region. 20 Summer 1936: In the wake of the declaration of war, ESE Patriarch Oliver Masao   addresses his population and speaks of the glorious conflict to come. 22 Summer 1936: During the NorGuard drive South, the 77th Regiment ( Screaming Banshees ) engages in the Battle of Two Towers with the MILICIA’s 121st  Regiment ( Fortunate Ones ). During the day-long conflict in the Barrington Basin  the oasis tower of Bianca is destroyed, and many locals killed.  Late Summer 1936: The NorGuard drive South is a two-pronged affair involving  an Eastern and a Mekong Task Force. The Eastern Task Force enters and establishes  supply lines in the Free Emirates. Supported by the local rebel Emirs, they prepare  to move west toward the Southern Republic.  At the same time, the Mekong Task Force faces heavy opposition in the Dominion. Peacekeeper units whom the Northerners expected to be allies are revealed as dogged enemies. After several days of heavy fighting and serious losses, the Task Force must withdraw to the desert fringe. The promises made by Mekong leader  Arron Logan that the Dominion would welcome the North prove to be completely false.  30 Summer 1936: Nigel Shirow officially welcomes the Northern troops to the  Free Emirates, and regains the initiative as leader among the rebels.  AUTUMN 22 Autumn 1936: UMF Treasurer Yves Banderas ’ personal jet drops off radar  during a good-will tour of the league. 27 Autumn 1936: After a full season of slow advances, the Northern Guard’s  Eastern Task Force captures the Humanist city-state of Raleigh and the surrounding territory. The city-state welcomes the Northerners and negotiates an alliance  with the Free Emirates.  28 Autumn 1936: UMF officials recover the body of Yves Banderas and uncover  evidence that his jet was shot down by Southern stealth fighters. UMF Army chief  Solomon Davi becomes interim Treasurer of the UMF. 37 Autumn 1936: ESE Patriarch Oliver Masao orders his forces into an assault on  Okavango and calls for the death of Emir Rafael Bhravo .  40 Autumn 1936:  News spreads that a task force led by the Northern landship Vigilance has carried out a devastating attack  against Aquitaine in the Southern Republic . The North cheers her latest victory. The media is not reporting it, but there are rumours the entire 55th Red Wing Heavy Gear Regiment has been annihilated. 9 Winter: SNN media reports the AST are attacking Khayr-Ad-Din. 10/Wi/37. Snr Ranger Carter remembers it well, the fifth battle of Ashington. Why, it was twenty years ago today that he saved the Colonel of the Regiment, Victoria Edden-Smythe, from that CEF hover tank.  They gave him a Northern Star for that.  Edden-Smythe... now Grand Marshal of the Northern Guard, Supreme Commander of the CNCS. 10/Wi/37 (10/7/23 IRL):  Battle of Bosin Farm.  Patrol to Bosin Farm - rescue farm girl   Ilanora Stepiani from pursuing GREL, capturing one. Proceed to Bosin farm. Rescue  Bahbra Cottington-Smythe, the wife of Andruston County Chief Elder Stan-Alexei Mustafa, from a GREL rapist. Corporal Findlay rescues  Rikard Bosin and his young daughters  Ema & Lin, capturing a second GREL. Trooper Amy 'Aimless' Watson scores her first combat kill, destroying a Jager Gear crewed by a GREL Minerva. In all 6 GREL 'super soldiers' are killed, two captured. 11 /Wi/37 (11/7/23)  Battle of Hadley . Following the 'battle of Bosin Farm', Drone surveillance reports suspicious activity around Hadley, an abandoned mining settlement. Captain Hale sends a Squadron to investigate, and eliminate any GREL raiders. The GREL are defeated, a Mordred and a Minerva are captured, but their captive Celia Faversham from Collette Seminary is killed during the fighting. Cpl Findlay is devastated. In the Battle on the Plain, 3rd Section killed 7 GREL (6 Mordred & 1 Minerva), captured 1 Mordred, total 8. In the Battle of Hadley, 3rd Section killed 1 Jan class GREL leader ( Soldier Kolak 3347 ) & 5 GREL Mordred, and captured 1 GREL Minerva, total 7. Along with the 8 GREL from the Battle of Bosin farm, that makes 23 GREL in all. Interrogation of the prisoners, in particular the Minerva indicates that the GREL raider group have been eliminated. Normally the only law in the sparsely populated Badlands counties is a marshall or sheriff paid for by the local farmsteaders & miners, but with the AST threat the CNCS Northern Guard has deployed along the border region to create a buffer zone, primarily to protect CNCS/UMF territory north of the border.

Polygamy on Terra Nova . Harems as such are only a common thing among the aristocracy of the Eastern Sun Emirates; some Southern Republic & Mekong aristocrats also maintain more informal harems. This is generally seen in the North as a sign of Southern decadence. Of the Northern churches, the Jerusalemites preach standard monogamy, with the Swanscombe Matriarchy emphasising the importance of a man obeying his wife, and a wife's 'gentle leadership' of her husband. As with Mormonism & Islam, polygamy was common in early Sorrento Revisionism. Second Follower Nathani Reiss is said to have had four wives, and Sorrento Revisionist doctrine recognises up to this number as a legitimate bonding. It's also possible for a woman to be in the lead or 'husband' role, with four female 'wives', employing artificial insemination - the fruitfulness of the faithful is very important in Revisionism.  However as CNSC federal law only recognises a single marital pair bond, which can be of any combination of sexes (m-f, m-m, f-f), Revisionists therefore have the concept of a 'church wife' or 'church partner', who have gone through a church wedding but are not legally married in the eyes of the State. In the UMF and WFP partners in such polygamous unions have fewer legal rights in the event of divorce, whereas in the NLC they are treated effectively as fully married. Revisionism  Second Follower Nathani Reiss, founder of the Sorrento Revisionist Church.  Sorrento Revisionism is frequently in conflict with the smaller Massada Revisionist church, which follows the teachings of the Prophet's son and (they say) chosen successor, First Follower Jakob Khodaverdi, rather than those of Second Follower Nathani Reiss. Sex Roles All major nations of Terra Nova are officially egalitarian, with men and women holding the same secular political and legal rights - or lack of rights, in the case of the Eastern Sun Emirates. Revisionism, especially Sorrento Revisionism , has Patriarchal leanings, emphasising the role of the man as leader of the family, with Nathani Reiss as the model to aspire to - husband, father, leader. A Sorrento Revisionist man should marry - a church wedding, with from one to four wives - and be fruitful. Within the church it is generally (though not universally) considered that a woman can potentially fulfil the Husband or leadership role, with one or more female Wives, and Second Follower Hutchison is known to have supported this view. Massada Revisionism sees Jakob Khodaverdi in a similar light as the model man, but is overall less concerned with temporal matters.  Massada Revisionism does not emphasise fertility, and bans marriage (and parenthood) for the Massadan clergy, though long term romantic liaisons are tolerated. Both branches of Revisionism disapprove of promiscuity. Jerusalemism , while nominally founded upon all the Abrahamic faiths, draws strongly upon Roman Catholicism, one of its major founding creeds. Modern Jerusalemism is generally egalitarian. However Swanscombe Jerusalemism  emphasises the role of St Mary Magdalene as leader of the Christian Apostles - the wise and enlightened woman who leads her often muddled, confused and simple menfolk towards understanding and faith.

Azov Azov is a city with curious allegiances. It lies north of the equator, and yet it is a member of the Allied Southern Territories. The reason  for this lies in the city’s history. Azov was once the largest mining town in the Badlands, with over half a million people living within  its city limits. Around TN 1300, the local mineral lodes began to run out and Azov slowly went into decline. By the time Earth abandoned  Terra Nova, Azov was already a ghost town. With the removal of the old colonial corporations, the Badlands suddenly became a very dangerous place. Azov’s closest neighbors  began arming themselves and waging war on each other. Fearing the growing power of the nearby city-states, Azov joined the first  major Terranovan confederation at the earliest opportunity. In TN 1681, while the Northern powers were still debating over the  formation of the CNCS, Azov voluntarily became a member of the AST. Today, Azov is no more than a corpse city. A few thousand people still inhabit the ruins of what was once a major metropolis. Entire  skyscrapers are often occupied by one or two families. A few of the old mines are still in operation, providing a meager income for the  remains of this great city. About one-quarter of the city’s population consists of the Southern MILICIA garrison force permanently  stationed there. Most of the city’s economy is now geared toward supplying and entertaining these soldiers. Azovites tend to be xenophobic and have a gloomy outlook on life. The entire city seems to project an aura of defeat. Most residents  believe that it is only a matter of time before the desert sands swallow up the remains of Azov. Few Azovians like to interact with their  compatriots and usually mind their own businesses. As such, Azov has become a perfect hideout for renegade soldiers or criminals. One  exception to this rule is Balthazar Caro , the “oldest man on Terra Nova.” A crotchety, withered Badlander, Caro lives near Azov and  claims to be older than the hills. Anyone foolish enough to pay attention to him, will be stuck listening to stories of walking  Stoneheads, seas in the Badlands, and the true Terranovans — alien descendants of the Prime Knights. The major exception is the 76th Heavy Gear Regiment (MILICIA) Ghosthawks under Commandant Marcel Odragun .    With an estimable tradition as a reconnaisance & raid regiment, the Ghost Hawks are mostly equipped with high performance Iguana Gears, and are regarded as comparable to most Republican line units.
