Long ago a cataclysmic war between the mortal races and the forces of the hells and the abyss took place. The mortal's races won but paid a heavy price but in the end achieved victory. This war and event shaped the way most races, especially humans viewed magic. Magic originates from the demon-filled abyss and spreads throughout the world, and spell casters manipulate these winds to make their arcane effects. However, magic can be chaotic and dangerous due to its origins, and summon demons by mistake, cause illness, or even open a rift directly to the abyss itself. Many societies recognize the dangers of magic and put strict limits on its usage. So many spell casters must work in secret, for fear of being called a witch or a warlock and being persecuted. Magic may also have an affect of a persons psyche or body, causing madness and mutations. The only exception to magic is that of divine magic. Divine magic is a gift directly from the god/goddess the follower worships. Thus it is deemed safe and does not originate from the abyss and most of the negative side affects do not apply. The story will start with a group of adventures tasked with investigating an abandoned/ruined village. Disturbing reports have come from the village of villagers going mad, and most of the village is missing. The last 2 witch hunters who departed have yet to return, so the church is forced to look for aid in adventurers. This is a dark fantasy world to keep in mind while all races are allowed, not all races are welcomed by each other. The campaign is meant to be a challenging and serious campaign with roleplaying being a significant part. But the exact balance of gameplay elements will be discussed between the DM and players at session 0. There will be some homebrew rules such as removing your armor at camp to make traveling in the wilderness more dangerous, a new death save system, and possibly lingering injuries (depending on how the party feels about them) .
