I like Tags but.........

The number of images are getting pretty big. I really would like to just put all my npc pictures inside a folder. Yes searches work well but I'd like to be more organized when I'm looking through all my images. I have to scroll up and down to find a certain image in with tags. I've got like 300 images it really would be easier for me just go to a certain folder to find that image.

Completely agree, as a user and content creator. The tag system solves certain problems, but it can't be thought of as an interface.

Totally agree, I bought so much art on the marketplace that I forgot I have because of this. 90% of my bought items I dont use, because they have no tag when bought, and a lot I buy "on the fly" during the game..to be lost in the bowels of "untagged pages upon pages" of tokens. Sure I can goto my library, and tag them all I guess...but they don't come pre-tagged, and cant tag more than 30 at a time. and even with tags. I might have some 7-8 pages in I totally forgot I have, since I don't want to "click, click, click, click" next and load them all and scroll to see them in a rush to plop an NPC down..so I resort to using some random found search result from the web instead. If we had folders, would could add them as we see them to folder...which is turns moves NEW images to the screen we will see replacing the moved ones. eventually by passive sorting move them all into a correct 'folder'. Nothing slows a game down like "hold on guys, I got a orc mage here somewhere in my 40 pages of art that was in some pack I bought 4 months ago thats not tagged, and I don't remember the artist or filename he used..so give me 3-4 minutes to look at 5000 thumbnails, of which I can see about 6 at a time on each scroll, to find it". So I go quick tag it spur of the moment with whatever name i had in my head at that instance (I rarely RARELY tag things, I myself dont like tags at all, the concept fits for databases queries to pull data to me, not file sorting)..then 3 months later I forget "did I tag it 'orc' or 'mage' or 'orcmage', or 'npcwizard', or '4lvl Caster"..and repeat going thru my dropdown of tags to find what I called him.
I totally agree. The only trouble is that this has been suggested countless times for just about every part of the software that could benefit from folders, and folders is something the devs have shown no interest in. Sad, but true. (And if I'm wrong about that, please link, because I'm extremely interested!) Keep at it though. It's like watching a contest to see who can hold out the longest. :D
I'd like to see a compromise solution involving a browsable tag "tree" which would function like a fully-symlinked folder tree. Instead of a directory path, there could be a "selected tags" concept, and the display area could include all items with exactly those tags (possibly with an option to show all items with those tags as well as others) plus entries for each additional tag present on an item in the collection so far. For example, consider a library with the following images (tags in square brakets after each item): fighter.png: [token] [human] [melee] drow.png: [token] [elf] [drow] [melee] ranger.png: [token] [elf] [ranged] grass.jpg: [background] [outdoors] tile.jpg: [background] [indoors] carpet.jpg: [background] [indoors] The top-level view of the library could show: +background (3) +drow (1) +elf (2) +human (1) +indoors (2) +melee (2) +outdoors (1) +token (3) Opening the "background" tag would show: +indoors (2) +outdoors (1) Opening "indoors" would show: carpet.jpg tile.jpg Each view could have a "breadcrumbs" list of the currently selected tags. A checkbox or link to show/hide all elements in the subtree could be added, so the "background" view above would become: +indoors (2) +outdoors (1) carpet.jpg grass.jpg tile.jpg
You might check what Riley said in this thread: <a href="https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/832545/the-pain-" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/832545/the-pain-</a>... I am hoping some improvements will come in the next major update.
