Got a good session going despite a lack of folks showing up.
Archie and Brandon decided to face up to the challenge alone from 1:30 PM to
5:30 PM (PDT)
Players for this session included:
*Chris D. as a fledging GM, stumbling and bumbling along.
*Brandon playing Rothuk, Barbarian Berserker with greataxe.
(255 Points)
*Archie playing Enarit Wyn, Shadow Elf Scout with bow. (261 Points)
The arena battle, sponsored by an unknown figure, promised
an enlightening and enriching time for the participants if they managed to live
through it. Or even if they just took one step and surrendered at the
overwhelming might facing them.
Their opponents . . . a pack of trolls, well-armed for the
most excepting for the immense Greentooth, a troll that dwarfed Rothuk at a
grand height of 8’5”. Unarmed and still deadly with his long reach.
Starting out with folks sizing up their opponents for a
couple seconds to see what they were going to be up against. Archie took the
first blood by hitting a Troll Brute in the vitals with a burrowing bodkin,
taking it down almost entirely in one strike, only keeping up through
willpower.
Rothuk started by throwing an axe at the Juggernaut, but
missing.
And then it was the Trolls’ turn. Moving in closer and preparing
to attack. The Brute and Archer readying their own, but to no real avail as the
Brute was taken down without even getting a chance to do its worst.
The juggernaut itself took a heroic charge and attempted,
and failed to grapple onto Rothuk who dodged it in a fashion worthy of the
Matrix.
Going back and forth between the teams until Rothuk managed
to cripple the Juggernaut’s hand and got shot in the hand and groin with arrows for his trouble. On the other side Enarit was peppering the opposing team with DWAs, taking down a pikeman and even hitting the Juggernaut several times. Still, there was no stopping the juggernaut as it bit into Rothuk’s with
enough force to even cause itself damage and then grabbing onto Rothuk’s arm. Despite arrows to the face from Enarit, the giant Troll nearly wrenching Rothuk’s arm from the socket, crippling it
in the process, and forcing Rothuk to burn out 6CP to get critical successes
and hit the juggernaut in the face and the groin, getting the troll off of him
and knock him down for a loop allowing Rothuk to just whale on the now prone
and stunned troll for almost no effect as they learned what exactly the
Juggernaut could actually resist with great horror. Meanwhile Enarit learning how much fun it can be to fight against
another Heroic Archer, they loosed volleys of arrows at each other, hitting each other and what might have been ugly for the shadow elf was reversed thanks to his burrowing bodkins going straight through Pinkeye's armor. This brought the elf to a total of five enemies downed by his bow. At least
technically, as the duo soon learned the arena fight's gimmick.
Sadly the barbarian, swinging with his axe, makes a critical
miss and drops his axe forcing him to punt, almost literally, the Juggernaut’s
head.
And then he critical failed once more, as though the dice
were trying to balance out his critical successes, trying to kill a troll to
get out of berserk state, falling down on top of the troll and just simply
punching him to death, allowing Rothuk to get out of berserk and avoid his death roll.
Sadly, despite all the work they did, they were unable to
completely beat the troll as on Rothuk’s next turn, he failed his
unconsciousness roll and as Enarit believed that he couldn’t beat the scenario without the strong
arm of his companion, he immediately laid down his bow.
Ending with the scout’s surrender, the barbarian was dragged
from the arena and they gained their money and learned a valuable lesson. +3CP and $3,000 to both Enarit and Rothuk for their valiant fight.
