How to allow player to make a secret selection that is revealed by them.

I'm not sure if I have worded the title as well as I want to. The situation is this. In a Mythras Campaign I am setting up I want to be able to give players a means by wwhich they can use the "Prepare Counter" special effect. The mechanics for this in the standard game are as follows. In combat succesful attacks and parries come with added "Special Effects" such as "Choose Location" "Impale" Bleed" and so on. Some are particular to weapon types, some are only useable when attacking, others while defending, and some are only unlocked by a Critical succes, or a fumble on the part of your opponent. "Prepare Counter" allows a defender who gains a "Special" to choose an Attacking Special and if the attacker gains a succes and uses that Special it is immediately countered. Butu the thing is, the defender makes this choice secretly and in a normal tabletop game would simply write it on a piece of paper and flip it over when the attacker uses that Special. (Hope this is making sense) I pre-empt this by saying we don't use video only voice... What I want is a way the player can enter a Special, and reveal its name when I have an attacker use it. It is one of the few inatsnces where I really do not want to know what they are planning so that it works to its best potential. I'm thinking... "Cards?" maybe too much clutter for something that is not used very much. A Rollable Table maybe? With a Macro where they can store a choice on their sheet and activate it? Not sure how that would work? Set up an "Ability" attached to the character sheet? Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. And I'm happy to try and provide any clarification if the above is confusing.

I'm not sure of the best approach for this, but using Cards seem pretty good. It makes sure players are less likely to forget the mechanic exists.

As a test I've created a card set that inlcudes all the 40+ specials available, set it to infinite and choose and face down, so a player can draw one from the deck and just flip the image when needed. (Edit to add: I'd not used cards before in a game and it was far easier than I had anticipated it being...) To be honest, looking at it now, considering how often the ability is likely to be used, it's far less intrusive on the screen than I guessed it would be. Now to set up a bunch of Token Markers for the specials... Cheers GiG
