Hey, there! Player looking to join an existing, long term group of good folk. Hoping to play, but I could be persuaded to GM. (This is in addition to my earlier post about Burning Wheel!) I am EST and available Monday through Wednesday between 630PM and 1030PM. Weekends are a maybe. I prefer voice and video — I find if hard to engage with people if I can’t see faces. Here’s a little about me: I’ve been roleplaying for about 15 years, since my early 20s (I’m 36). I was introduced via D&D 3.5, but I’ve moved to other games since then. I’ve played or run Burning Wheel (my favorite), Torchbearer, PbtA games (Monster of the Week, Masks), FitD games (Blades in the Dark, Scum and Villainy), Traveler, Kids on Bikes, HERO 6E, a little D&D 5E… probably some other things. Really been itching to play The One Ring, Burning Empires, Alien, Harn, and Zweihander. I'm pretty open, but I'm staying away from D&D, Pathfinder, OSE, and PbtA right now. I enjoy heavy roleplay and deep characters (PCs and NPCs). I like to tie my PCs to other PCs, to NPCs, and to the story. That’s the best way for me to enjoy games. If my character isn’t tied in and is just “along for the ride,” my interest wanes quickly. Motivation, belief, goals — that’s what does it fore me. I love having things my characters value put at risk — my life, my home, my friends, my heirloom sword, my beliefs, etc. I stay away from intrigue -only games. Politics, sure. But if everyone is playing Littlefinger, Varys, and Walter White, I find my interest wanes. Same thing with grimdark games. I like things gritty, but Mark Lawerence, The Black Company, and so on aren’t to my taste. And I bow out of games with violence toward kids or sexual violence. Here’s my take on combat in RPGs: It’s part of the roleplay. Some people differentiate between roleplay and combat (“I like a 60/40 split”). To me, combat SHOULD be roleplay. Luke’s fights with Vader. All the amazing choreography in Hero. Jaime fighting Ned Stark on the streets of King’s Landing. The Fellowship’s fights in Moria. Combat should be roleplay! I grew up on King’s Quest, Quest for Glory, Tolkien, and Dennis L. McKiernan and was introduced to Baldur’s Gate (the isometric games from the 90’s and early 00’s) and Knights of the Old Republic in my late teens. Since then, I’ve enjoyed Guy Gavriel Kay and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Greg Rucka’s Black Magic, Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, the Expanse books, and the Artesia comics. I’m reading Tad Williams for the first time right now. Greatly enjoyed The Witch (but feel meh about The Witch er ); Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero; Princess Mononoke; Alien; and Pig. I rewatched Conan and Willow earlier this year — they did not age well, but I still have fond memories of them. If I sound like I could be a good fit for your table or you just want to chat, let me know!
