Which D&D 5e books to get for DM and Players

Trying to be a nice guy. My DM is fantastic and I wanna help out by gifting books that will be useful to him and his players on roll20. Is that possible? I've looked through the forums a bit, but every one uses abbreviations, and I don't know what they mean, lol (I'm too new to D&D) Rule books, extra books, etc. Stuff that can be shared and make the game easier/more fun on roll20. Thanks guys!

Hi Ruiseart,  If you want to stock up on D&D 5e books the best ones are:  Player's Handbook : contains most of the rules, races, etc. Note: much of this content is in the SRD (and thus the free compendium) but not everything. Dungeon Master's Guide : contains the rules and magic items your DM will need. Note: again, some of this content is in the SRD (and thus the free compendium) but not everything.  Monster Manual : Contains all the monsters. Probably the single best purchase. Note: again, some of this content is in the SRD (and thus the free compendium) but not everything, especially not the artwork.  Tasha's Cauldron of Everything : Contains many options for classes, more spells, etc. Also contains the class Artificer.  Xanathar's Guide to Everything : Contains more things like spells etc. But the thing I like most about it are the expansion on various rules such as the downtime rules.  Monsters of the Multiverse: MANY more race options. If you want your group to have a wide variety of races, this is a definite resource. Additionally, has a lot of monsters to add to the monsters your DM has access to.  This is the basic list of books I typically recommend. After that you start getting into specifics, such as setting books. For those I'd ask your DM what they might want and allow. Many setting books contain more race options etc.

It might be good to look at the compendium page and see which ones he has shared with you. It could be a good indicator of what he doesn't own.
Personally I only ever bought the DM's Guide once (AD&D 2E) and felt the information in there didn't really tell me much I hadn't already gleaned through playing a fantasy role playing game.  Maybe the magic items in there have stuck with me and thus I tend to know what would fit a treasure drop, who knows, but as a lifetime DM I can honestly say that for me that book would come at the end of the (spot on) list from Gauss.  Player's Handbook, Monster Manual and the subsequent Tasha's, Xanathar's etc are all golden.  Interested to see what 2024's DM's Guide brings though
