X-Files inspired Chronicles of Darkness D10 System campaign looking for players

Hi Everyone Remember the 90's TV show “the X-Files”? I'm basically setting up a campaign in a setting based on that show. If you are interested in such a setting keep reading. I am looking for a few (3 to 4) players to run a Chronicals of Darkness type campaign. Experience in the setting or playing ttrpg's is not required, this game is open to new and experienced players. I'm using as a basis the 2004 “the world of darkness” white wolf sourcebook, but will be using that rules set as a guideline since I run a mostly narrative campaign with some flareups of the good old ultraviolence. The setting, worldbuilding and everything in it are homebrew and left up to my and the players imagination. The setting: Homebrew “Murrica” The players will be employed by a US government agency (keep in mind this will restrict character creation a bit due to you all being special agents with the corresponding obligations and perks such careers hold) We will be playing in a world that is very much like our own, but slightly less serious. Consider how in the GTA computer games Rockstar makes a bit of a caricature of the USA, lets call this fictional realm “Murrica” and you probably will have a idea of the kind of world I'm aiming for. Slightly dystopian capitalist society with winners and losers. A world where strange things truly happen although the mainstream media and government are telling you nothing is going on, go back to your beer and baseball and go catch a monster truck show and some WWE wrestling on the weekend nothing to see here folks please move along. I run a open world type game where player agency is important, the world will go on around you and react to you. Player action can escalate the world and change the nature of the game I am not a fan of railroading players. The characters will not be supernatural they will be baseline humans. (Keep in mind that baseline humans can die or be permanently incapacitated quite easily and are quite squishy by nature... so character death or retirement could happen if things get out of hand) This setting will have no magic but with resources technology science and skills you can still make a difference Why play in the USA of Murrica? Well.. they have the Bigfoot, Florida man,Area 51, 2 nd amendment rights, the military industrial complex and other ingredients to play around with over there, combine that with a huge amount of tv shows to steal borrow ideas from..... that's why I'm using the Murrica setting, What can you expect? Government agent type sessions where you go investigate things, might run into psychological or just flat out horror, intrigue, corruption, violence, conspiracy, “cop drama” The idea is a series of mission / assignment based sessions with a overarching storyline behind it all. What not to expect? Long drawn out tactical combat using combat maps and tokens, I run a narrative game not a tactical one. There will be combat and rolling dice on occasions but it won't be the main element of the game, Who am I looking for? A group of mature players (18+) that enjoy a story with at times darker themes and politically incorrect subjects and statements. We might run into (grim) Dark subjects that can be uncomfortable to some at times although I do draw the line at eRP this is non negotiable . So be aware that such subjects could be part of the story that some would feel uncomfortable with. That said it won't be all gloom and doom, but I'm not shying away from subjects so consider this your trigger warning, If you are sensitive or easily offended this might not be the game for you (and there is nothing wrong with that!) Knowledge of the system is not necessary being able to communicate in the English language is a must. Player characters will be as said government employees and will be treated by the world as such, meaning the setting will hold you accountable for your actions so its more NPC's that might be objectionable because players are held to a higher standard due to their roles as agents. I run a 18+ game and am opening this game up to both new and experienced players, our goal will be to have fun and not to be a bunch of murder hobo's running through the world killing things. Who am I? I am a 45 yr old Dutch guy with some time on his hands and looking for a good game I have been playing tabletop for about 30 years now, most of that time spend as a GM storytelling whitewolf systems. Due to how things go people becoming parents, moving away getting careers etc.... my last grand campaign ended about 5 years ago and I haven't played much until I recently started storytelling Vampire the Masquerade to a group of international online friends. I got a taste for more and thats why I'm throwing this campaign out there. So even though I am experienced at the table I am new to the whole online GM thing and am still developing skills and methods to become better at just a voice type of communication without body language, I am fluent in English although you will notice I am not a native speaker We will be playing Voice only, I have a discord server to which I will invite those who sign up as guinea pigs in this experiment of mine. Besides that we will be using the roll20 site. When will we play? Time and dates will be agreed upon by the group on discord once we got people, I'm aiming for friday (evening) or weekend sessions. Since 2023 is about to expire we will be starting in 2024 Character creation is limited due to setting but we will make a character in a 1 on 1 discord call and within setting limits as a federal agent you have a lot of specialization options. Regarding time zones. I am at GMT +1 European time, I am looking to play in the evening / early night. If you are in a different timezone you're more then welcome to join but be aware that I do have to sleep at times and my timezone is leading. Sessions will probably last between 4 to 6 hrs. but this is something to agree upon, (that said I'm a bit of a night owl so people from across the ocean can apply if they are able to play during their daytime and my evening/night) Depending on how this goes and if we are having fun, this could be a miniseries of sessions or a larger campaign. I am aiming at a longer campaign but I have to be honest this online ttrpg thing is a bit of a trial for me, so we will have to see how it develops. If you read this far and you're interested or have questions send me a message over roll 20 or leave a comment. The truth is out there. Claes
Definitely interested in the game!
I have wanted to play in an X-Files-style game for years.  It is one of my gaming fantasies.   Would you possibly consider using Conspiracy-X? It is a RPG designed for exactly this kind of game and the system is simple and very good.  It is Unisystem, the same system used in All Flesh Must Be Eaten.
Honest answer no, and I will explain why.  World of darkness/chronicles of darkness (same game depending on 1st or 2nd edition) is also made for this kind of game its an easy system I know how to use without thinking and looking up too much besides that I just like this system a lot. Combine that with the connectivity with other WOD systems (vampire/werewolf/wraith/changeling/exalted etc) from which I can use templates or borrow powers and easily adapt them if need be, not necessarily as werewolf's and vampires or ghosts I can fit different things on such a template perhaps even.... aliens.  I can combine that connectivity with the tons of sourcebooks I got stacked on my shelves (as in non pdf but real books) Besides that I don't use the system all that much meaning that rolls do occur but I run a mostly narrative game, so switching up systems wouldn't make too much sense for me, ofc dice will be rolled but not that many  You're of course still welcome to join in if you think it could be fun regardless the system, in which case we will have a get to know each other talk on discord to see if we can make this happen. I accepted the first player into the game yesterday she was actually looking for a chronicles of darkness / world of darkness game for years (her actual words) just like you're after Conspiracy X funny enough. So that's the long answer why no to the system change request. If you're still interested send me a pm through roll 20 with your discord.
No thanks, I'm not a CoD fan.
sure thing mate, I hope you find your Conspiracy X game one day

small update: At this point I've accepted 2 players for this campaign one is from Europe the other is from South America so our time zones will aim at playing with all who can make it. This means if you're in Europe it will be evening and in North or south America during the day time. If people are interested in joining I got 1 or 2 (max) spots left. We will be playing on the weekends. Send me a message or respond in the thread here and I will be in contact with you.
Thanks, mate!  Have you seen the new updates for the Storyteller System Onyx Path put out? They might be pretty promising.
@The Batman  Can't say I have but I have to confess I'm not the kind of GM that is really into systems. I got a bunch of em (mostly old and very old books on shelves that are straining under the weight) but when I got to the whitewolf d10 stuff that just clicked for me. Its simple enough I can explain the basics to a new player in 5 minutes and its good enough for things like combat to be interesting. The Chronicles rules also added a nicer way of extended actions for me to mess around with, but in reality for me I'm mostly about "The Story" and not the rolls.  As a GM I'm a thief and a cheat, meaning I will grab/steal and implement inspiration and system elements from anywhere I find something interesting for my stories. A cheat because I usually if its not a main story arc fight will cheat  to keep player characters alive if at all possible.... shhh don't tell my players ;)  (that said, player characters can and will die or get hurt if they really mess up)  But I think that a certain amount of (hidden) plot armour make the stories I tell more interesting but as said a certain amount its not a infinite leniency.  Systems for me are a "necessary evil"  that are there as a framework for the stories.  Since this one actually (I googled it) seems to be a update for the d10 system I use I might have a gander and investigate it a bit more. Thanks for the heads up. Since you seem into systems, if you want a interesting one look for rêve de dragon its a French system where you play a dreaming dragon (title is Dragon Dreams in French) The goal of the player is to keep your dragon amused and dreaming so it doesn't wake up if I recall correctly (its been a long time)  I got that book in some box somewhere its one of the weirder games/settings I own. Its a interesting one although a bit of a mess as well.  Another interesting one I own a few books off is "Hong Kong Action Theatre"  Where your character is a actor not a hero, and you play in kungfu films and other Hong Kong cinema type films and your movie star character plays other characters (in vastly different stories  depending on what film and role you're cast into that specific film) so your 1 character could be a villain or a martial artist or a sci fi character etc depending on the role you're cast into. But in essence you're a actor playing those roles depending on the stats and perks you have.  Its kinda weird but amusing
