Axis and Allies Interest Check

The title says it all; I am in the process of preparing Axis and Allies for Roll20. For those of you unfamiliar with Axis and Allies, think Risk on steroids. It is a turned based strategy game set in World War 2. The version I will be using is the 1940 Second Edition Europe map. I am in need of four (4) players, with myself being the 5th player. Whether I receive enough responses determines how much effort I will put into this, I hope more than just myself would like to play this game. *PLEASE NOTE* This game is VERY rule heavy, so take the time it will take me to set everything up to go over the rules. Once again, this will be the 1940 Second Edition Europe Map! Here is a site that has the setup chart and the Rulebook: http://www.axisandallies.org/resources-downloads/ Thanks for reading!
I won’t be sending you an email just yet, but color me interested. I very much enjoyed lengthy sessions of A&A as a kid, and would enjoy getting a game or two in through this lovely site. I know, I know… You mentioned that we would be playing the Europe map. Works for me!
Good man. Right now I'm just getting pictures for the units and sizing them correctly
I've only played A&A once. I'd need a rules refresher before I play, but I'd be down. I've only played the "global" map before (2 games, combining game boards). Are the rules for this one much different? Also, are you thinking of starting & finishing the game in a single session? What time(s) are you thinking of playing? Or were you thinking turn-based, and people just login when they can to do a turn, or part of their turn depending on combat?

The rules are not terribly different. In my original post there is a link that contains all the instructions for the game. Make sure you look under Axis & Allies 1940 Europe Second Edition. What I plan to do is do one to two turn cycles per session, or more if people can/want to keep going. By turn cycle, I mean every nation takes its turn. The times I haven't figured out yet. Right now I am just trying to get a player base to make sure I am not wasting my time by setting this up. I start a new job next week, and once I start I will have a set schedule. At that point I can talk times. One thing I can say for certain is that I am in the Eastern Standard Time/GMT-5.
Alright. Well, that sounds good to me, depending on time. I am in MST (GMT-7), and would be free Mon, Thurs, Fri after 7:30 pm MST/9:30 pm EST, and pretty much any time on weekends. If your times end up lining up with mine, count me in.
Hello, dfn! That’s possibly three. Keep up the good work, Robert, and three may be the magic number to get it rolling, when you’re ready, of course.
I'd definitely play, though I'm more familiar with the world map as well. I'm available weekdays before 5pm and after 8pm, and in the later evenings on the weekends (Eastern Standard Time)
Interested, when?
Michael B. said: Interested, when? Right now I am just trying to get a base of players that want in Michael. I am starting a new job next week, so I wont know my days off until wednesday. Once that is settled I should be ready to go. I am using my time now to gather pictures for unit tokens, and hopefully I will get people with compatible availability. As of right now, this is the list of interested players in order of who contacted me first: Mario A. - Dfn - Tyler M. - Ekko Foxtrot - Ken B. - Michael B. If you are not sure of any of the rules PLEASE go to this link : http://www.axisandallies.org/resources-downloads/ Once you are there find: Axis & Allies 1940 Europe Second Edition. and in case you were wondering, the reason I am not doing global is because I want to start small to make sure that it will be viable/fun before I grab the Pacific map.

Argh! So many games so little time. I would love to play as I havent played A&A in about 5 years. Admitedly, I haven't ever played the Europe map but it shouldnt be too different ruleswise . Yeah, ok, I was wrong. There are significant changes. Still, it shouldn't be too hard to absorb. :) Will this be asynchronous play or a regular meeting time? If Asynchronous I might be able to join. - Gauss
I've never played but its always caught my eye when ever I'm at the book store so I would be willing to give it a go depending on times and what not.
Gauss: I plan on it being regular sessions, but like i've stated in previous comments, I am waiting to start a new job, then i can set down a schedule. Cursingbulldog: Just go to the link and check out the rules, and be available!
Okay everybody who has responded to this thread, I would like to ask you to kindly put down your availability. I should have all the base work completed before the weekend is out, and I will know my schedule on wednesday.
Monday: 7:30 pm and later Thursday: 7:30 pm and later Friday: 7:30 pm and later Weekend: almost any time All times are MST (GMT-7)

Do you mind discussing how you plan on making A&A work with Roll20? What resources are you using to get the maps, figures, etc.? How do you plan on doing the stacking of units? Stuff like that. I was thinking of doing this myself, but there are lots of services that you can play A&A with your friends on line. Vassal being one of them. I was going to scan in the map and units all myself, but if you download the vassal module and then change the extension to .zip and unzip it you will find everything is all there. :) Konrad
I would also like to get in on this, played the classic A&A game a lot as a kid and now have both the 1940 games sitting on a shelf with only a couple of games started and one finished thanks to less than committed house mates. There is a chance I may be away for June and July depending on which way jobs go but other than that you can count me in, assuming the dates and times are doable of course. Fiachra.

Robert, I may be able to play friday or sunday evenings depending on the schedule you arrive at. Asynchronous play I would definitely be in. - Gauss
Hey, emailed you last week and forgot to post my availability. Would be available anytime from Friday 8:15PM-Sunday 4PM.
Most times on the weekend are free. T,Th,F 9am-2pm and 6pm+ PST, subject to change, but thereabouts for some time to come.
Okay guys, I am nearly done with the busy work. I am goin to be available after 5:30PM eastern/GMT-5 tomorrow and thursday. If any of you guys can make that time, I just want to get some people into the map, and pick nations out and maybe give some rule refreshers if needed. In case you didn't know the nations you pick from there are: Germany (MINE!), Italy, U.K./France (as that player you control both), U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. Once again PLEASE read up on the rules for the 1940 Second Edition Europe version of the game.
I can make Thursday, but for me, it would be way after 5:30 pm EST. 5:30 = 3:30 for me, and I'm still at work then. If I have a choice, I'd like to take U.S.S.R. or U.S.A.
yea i know, you are good at 10:30 eastern according to your older post
9:30, and yeah, still good for those times
Okay guys I have my schedule FINALLY! It looks like nearly every day I will have from 3:00PM to 8:00PM Eastern/GMT-5 open, and I will have Tuesdays and Wednesdays completely free. Sorry for the delay, and thank you for being so very patient with me. Hopefully now we can hammer out a good game time.
*ATTENTION* everyone who has posted here, PLEASE PM me your email address so I can invite you to the game, and if you are available tonight let me know, I want to just iron out who will take what nation, and explain any rules that anyone needs help with.
Okay everyone, I have decided to change the game to asynchronous play! If you do not know what that means, it means that you play your turn when I post on the campaign page that is is your turn. You PM me all of your purchases, combat moves, and your noncombat and deployment moves. I will do all of the combat rolling. I want you to tell me when you move your units into combat whether you want me to be aggressive in attacking, or more conservative. Obviously you will want to PM other players on your team your strategy for play during the course of the game. I reiterate, PLEASE got to http://www.axisandallies.org/resources-downloads/ and read the rules for A&A 1940 Europe 2nd Edition. I will answer questions about rules, but I would rather not hold hands for the entire campaign. Right now the players are: Germany/Italy - Me USA/UK - Ekkofoxtrot USSR/France - Dfn We could definitely use more players so each player doesn't have to manage as many forces lol. I will post a start date for the game here, and on the campaign page, and PM me for a game invite!
Just FYI, no players should pick France. Also, you can still play your own turn provided that Robert is available to roll for the defenders and see what you're doing...right Robert?

Regarding Asynchro play, another idea is that you can make your moves, announce those moves (so that there is a record) and then roll the attacks. After that the other player would need to roll the defenders. By announcing rolls like this: /roll [attacking from territory A to territory B] Xd6 a record is made in the chat log. For an easier to read turn record a turn summary can be posted to the campaign details page. So my suggestion is this: Player makes the moves normally That player posts a record in the chat log and campaign details page. When resolving combat he can roll the first round and then wait for the defender(s) to roll his stuff. Then combat rounds proceeds a bit slower after that. Robert's version has the advantage that we do not need to wait for the back and forth of rolling. It also has the advantage that records do not need to be kept as much since he will be the only one moving peices. Oh, and I will play any nation that someone wants to hand off to me (this time). - Gauss
Gauss, i already have everything set up.

NP, I was just proposing an idea that would be less work for you. :) - Gauss
I appreciate the thought ;)
I am interested, for future reference. GMT + 2 As for me, I am a fairly experienced Axis & Allies player and have taught the game to more than 20(?)+ people. If you need technical assistance or ideas, let me know. D&D and Axis & Allies are my favorite games. While I may not be able to play (e.g. time zone difference or full table), is it possible for you to add me for observation purposes? Thanks, Tark

Tarek, currently we are full but we are also doing asynchronous play. Makes it a lot easier regarding time. If Robert is willing to start up a second game I would be interested in playing another asynch game. :) - Gauss
