Well, Hua Mulan supposedly lived in China during the Tang Dynasty of China in around 620 CE so that puts it roughly equivalent to Asuka period
. That predates firearms by about 500 years (12th century CE was when they were first introduced), and widespread usage by about 900 (1500s CE) after which it was abandoned until 1854 during the Meiji Restoration. Notably, this is about 500 years before the existence of the Samurai as a ruling class, ie before what is traditionally referred to as Feudal (or Medieval) Japan. You can roughly divide Japanese history into Ancient (Jomon), Classical (the Emperor and his court), Medieval (The rise of the Shogun and the military Samurai class, including the infamous Sengoku period which also marked initial European contact), the Edo period (Centralized control by the Shogun, what most people think of when they think of old Japan) and the Imperial Period (the rise of industrialization and bureaucratic control of the country under the Emperor, who seized power back from the Shogun during the Meiji Restoration.) I'd recommend... The Muromachi period
, which is the setting of Princess Mononoke. The Edo Period
, when a lot of popular Samurai dramas were set. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asuka_period" rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asuka_period</a>
