How to recreate this awesome trick with Dynamic Lighting and Fog of War

I want to recreate  this trick  with the current Dynamic Lighting, but I'm not seeing any way to get that done. I have a town map with individual buildings that I want to show the rooftops until the PCs approach and get a look inside. Sorry if this has been asked a million times already, but is there an easy way to do this? I don't know the first thing about APIs or macros, but I do have a Plus account.

This was done in Legacy Dynamic Lighting, but I don't see why it couldn't be done with the current Dynamic Lighting. They used Advanced Fog of War (I think the corollary is Explorer Mode?) and "explored" the whole map (including room interior) with the player tokens. The interiors of the buildings are separate tokens on the token layer, while the map layer has the rooftop views. Dynamic lighting lines surround the building (except for the windows). When the player tokens peek inside the window, they "see" the room interior token. When they don't have line of sight to the interior room token, they only "remember" the map layer (which is the rooftops). Note that everything on the map layer that is not in line of sight will appear greyed out in Explorer Mode, so just keep that in mind.
