For a slight reason to be hopeful about this idea... Dungeonscrawl has this feature. Roll20 aquired (now owns) Dungeonscrawl and has said they plan to integrate DS into Roll20 (in some way, we users don't know how that will look yet). If Roll20 can simply take the Opacity tech / method / feature from DS and add that to Roll20, it would resolve this Suggestion.
