Room for 4 players. Will be using mumble (free software). Must have mic/headset. 5e newbies welcome, although this diverges a bit from "standard" forgotten realms type D&D, and I have a few house rules to accentuate theme, so if this is your first time trying it isn't really exactly how everybody else does it. You can view these rules at adventuresintodarkness.blogspot.com Please note - I will be recording audio/video for possible youtube upload. No video chat, just audio. The video will be of the roll20 "board". Reply in this thread if you are interested. Please tell a bit about yourself, rpgs/campaigns you've played, and your favourite creepy movie! Thanks Chris Scott edit - I guess I should include more info about the setting since it has big impact on what you can play! Background: Pendle Hill is a desolate, isolated area in the Old North, located at the boundary of several former kingdoms which are now united under the High King. It is generally ignored by all the lords around it, as the land consists solely of gravelly rock and fetid marsh bogs, interspersed with a few scraggly forested areas. The few villages located there barely manage to eke out a subsistence from the soil, and the chill inducing cilmate has a constant overcast gloom with frequent rain all year round. The Old North is now ruled by High King Edwin, who inherited the title of High King from his warlike father. Fifteen years ago, Edwin married a princess from the eastern kingdoms across the sea. She converted him to a new religion, the church of the new sun. The symbol of this new religion is a white disc with arms reaching out on a field of black, and its priests are solemn men with shaved heads who conduct their sermons solely in the increasingly forgotten old Imperial tongue. All former religion and magic has been outlawed, and Edwin vigorously enforces the new god and punishes heretics. Pendle Hill is a high and solitary outcrop, considered strange and forbidding since time immemorial. The Imperial army only ever had a minor presence in the area, and that was two generations ago. The Empire has left the Old North to fend for itself, and petty warlords have squabbled over it ever since. The hill is near the forest of Bowland, also known as the Bowland Fells, and the Ribble River flows nearby. The local villages are Burnley, Colne, Sabden and Downham. Players note: For this one shot you will be playing local villagers of Pendle Hill. Due to Edwin's strict rules against heretics, you cannot play as the Cleric, Wizard, Monk or Paladin classes. There are are no other churches, monastaries or colleges of magic permitted in the Old North. Warlocks, Druids, Bards and Sorcerers are permitted, but it is assumed you keep your magical powers secret, for fear of discovery and inevitable torture and death at the hands of your fearful and superstitious neighbours. All characters must be human. Please use standard array for stats (15,14,13,12,10,8), and all characters are level 1. House rules: - Languages available: Imperial, Northlander - All spellcasters must roll a d20 when casting a spell (even if it is an automatic effect). If you roll a 1, you must consult a custom version of the Wild Magic table. Magic in the Old North is strange and dangerous, even to those who wield it. - If you are knocked unconscious, you must roll on a custom injury table, with effects ranging from a scar to lost limbs. - Failed fear checks lead to temporary insanity. The effects are exactly the same as the exhaustion rules, except instead of dying when you reach the highest level, you go permanently insane instead. For information on these house rules go to adventuresintodarkness.blogspot.com GM comments: This one shot should play in 3-4 hours. Please note I will be recording audio/video for a possible youtube upload. We will be using mumble. You can download the free client at sourceforge.net/projects/mumble. Roleplaying is encouraged. I will try and use the "Yes, and..." approach as much as possible. 5E doesn't have much bookeeping, so we will run off regular character sheets and just use roll20 for maps and to roll dice. Other than the house rules above, I will be adhering to the 5E rules as far as I understand them. If I goof on a rule I expect you to call me out. I will not be adjusting difficulty or cheating rolls to help the players succeed. A game where everyone has fun and dies horribly is more meaningful than one where the outcome is pre-determined. I will be capping players at 4 to keep the challenge up and to keep the pace quick. If you are interested in playing but can't get in to this session, I expect to run this one shot again
I want to be in this Campaign... I would likely be a Cleric or a Fighter I'm working on a horror campaign myself lately, just got done having an very interesting mental breakdown. I've been DMing for a few years now. My main campaign is an Evil Urban campaign in the Sealed Drow Wizard City of Sshamath. I've been told I'm the best DM a lot of my players have had. As for horror things such as American Horror Story, Occulus was probably the best creepy movie I've seen in a while however I would say watch Session 9 if you haven't seen it.
Thanks for your reply Maaz! I just added a bunch more info in the original post so please take a look. Also, for now this is not a campaign but a 4 hour one shot. The style will be more creepy atmospheric than gory horror. Let me know if this suits you. Thanks for the movie recommendations! Last night I watched A walk among the tombstones. It was pretty good for a Liam Neeson thriller.

Yes, I loved the systems you set up on your blog, I will look into your updates. I am very interested in joining your campaign. Occulus has a great take on how the supernatural effects the real world, but you only realize that at the end. Session 9 is an amazing Thriller Horror and was one of the creepiest movies i've seen in a long time. I would love to draft up a character, also how are you going about starting wealth/items?
Oops didn't actually attach the extra info to that post (posting via phone is awkward). Anyhow, more details there now. Thanks!
Chris, I see that Humans are the only race allowed. Are you allowing the Variant Human who get a Feat and Skill choice? Or is it just the standard Human?
The human variant with feats is totally fine!
Ooooooh this sounds like fun! I've been hankering for a good horror adventure since forever ago. Reminds me a little something like my beloved Ravenloft. :-) I'd love to play in this if you still need a player. I could play anything you needed, but would like to play either a rogue or maybe barbarian? Also, has the characters, "drank the koolaid," with the creepy religion or are they calling shenanigans on it? haha... if that makes any sense?!?

Awesome, now my only remaining question is there are Flat Starting Gold Rate + Background gold? Need to buy a few things.
I'm Very interested in playing^-^ though i am a 5E newbie. Have been playing pathfinder for a little over a year now, played a multitude of different campaigns including ones of roll20, been a DM of 5 different campaigns so far(2 are still ongoing), all but 1 being homebrew worlds and adventures, but again all from pathfinder only. Never played a Tabletop RPG other then D&D(Pathfinder Edition) since those are the only books I own and friends arnt keen on branching out. Really excited to try the new 5E and play my first horror campaign at the same time! As for horror movies I dont really watch them. Though I dont scare easily, I learned at a young age that horror movies give me bad nightmares. So either the movie is kinda boring because it isnt scary or its too scary and I have sleep issues for a week or so xD Uhm scariest movie I've watched recently would have to be is more of an anime and its called "When They Cry", but it was more creepy then scary :p
maddog I would say it is up to you if your character is receptive to the new religion or not. It is definitely the preferred choice of the nobility, as those who go along with it get more lands and titles. For the common folk, if they don't go along with the religion in public they get executed, but at home they probably still keep to some of the old beliefs. The imperial language is less commonly known, so a lot of people don't really know much about the new religion. Mostly the priests seem to keep to themselves, dealing publicly only with burial ceremonies and the like.

We have a couple of folks who may not be able to make it, so if anyone wants to be a backup that would be great! Send me a reply here or a private message and I'll send you an invite.
Sounds very interesting!
Yep... and you can use the Human Variant which lets you pick a feat at 1st level. Join our cult people!
Hey guys I can make a druid and I would like to play send me a invite
I'm sure Chris will get back to you when he has time, he is very good about responding and answering questions. I would say draft up the character for now. We have a stat array in the main message. A druid would be a very good addition to the party.
Noelle you should have received a pm with your invite. I agree that a druid would be great! Let me know if you have any questions.
