How good are map tiles?

I am an off the cuff GM (4e), I make it up as I go and draw quick and dirty maps on the spot. One thing I like about Roll20 is I can just keep adding onto a map as needed. But there is a drawback, to stay fast I have to limit my terrain to just like in a forest, generic splotches of difficult terrain and trees. And I was wondering how useful tiles are? Like with forest tiles, can I just keep adding tiles indefinitely and how fast is it to do so? I was looking at the three quick encounter packs and generic forest and thats a $21 purchase which is pretty hefty for something I'm not sure will be useful. And looking at the tiles offered I wasn't sold that it could accomplish this. If I'm not making myself clear just say so. I'm pretty sure for it to work I'll need completely predecorated tiles that I can just fit together into larger and larger maps. And although they have tiles that look like they could work, the problem is they all seem to have objects that run off the edges. Now I'm not sure thats a deal breaker or not, which is why I'm asking for advice. Would the players notice? Would they care? I already sank a huge chunk of money into a year's subscription of mentor so I really need to make sure I don't waste money on this. But if premade tiles could work well and fast (or faster) then I think that would be a great addition to my game. But I don't know. And I panic when it comes to money.

Devlin, There is somethign to be said for the "theater of the mind" that seems to be the hipster thing to do these days; and i totally get it - it's what spawned these games in the first place. However I've embraced the modern era and delve deeply into tiles and maps that i have found or created myself; i think it really improves immersion. Once you get a collection of tiles or learn how to create maps - i think the rewards fully outweigh any negligible time spent collecting/creating them. Tell you what - go to http://madcowchef.deviantart.com/gallery/48647465/... He has an AWESOME collection of seamless map tiles that are completely free. It may just be a matter of alot of downloading. however his tiles are almost 100% seamless and it should cover any number of impromptu encounters. just upload them, tag em, and drop and go as needed ;-) If you wanna chat with the creator you can find him on his Work-in-progresss thread : http://www.cartographersguild.com/virtual-tabletop... and give him a virtual high-five!
Nice resource K.T. I buy tiles as well, but my players eat up a lot of terrain, so thanks for this.
Well I guess if its free then there is no risk in giving it a try. Thanks. :)
