A great schism, the Ten Years' War, nearly brought the Holy Union to its knees, and in spite of the Church of Dawn's victory, the future hardly seems bright. Though the War ended two years ago, rebels yet roam the land, fighting on bitterly for their heretical faith; reports come of trespasses by hated Beyrogne, perched upon their bloodied neighbor like a carrion bird; worst of all, tales are told of horrible creatures and profane cults spreading like rot, enacting terrible plans to bring about the Union's demise from within. Dark shadows grow throughout Falensia and all the Known World, and madmen say that the End Times draw nigh; but such doomsayings are hardly the commoner's concern, and the toils and joys of life go on as they have for many centuries in the Known World's nations. You are among such common folk: honest or dishonest, hard-working or conniving, of fair intentions or selfish dreams. For one reason or another, you find yourselves in Oberstag, the second largest city in the province of Steinsia, pursuing your own lots in life. Spring rains finally begin to thaw winter's chill, and the people of Oberstag look forward to warmer days and the coming celebrations of Sommerfest. There may be more in store for you than you realize, for these are dark days, and darker ones still lie ahead. Whatever your own fates may be, however, there is hope for the peoples of the Known World, and perhaps you'll be the ones to provide it in the end. Perhaps not. Such is fate, and only the Divines know what course it will take.
