Confronted by three dwarven guardians, Nor decides to run for his life, fleeing the chapel. In the interim, Elaryan has also entered the room, which means that the sorcerer is trapped alone with the statues. Luckily, however, the guardians cannot fly-- so Elaryan takes to the air. While his spells are ineffective against the guardians, at least he is out of range of their attacks. Until the fifteen-foot-high statue of Torag also lurches to life. The Torag-shaped guardian is also immune to magic, and it is large enough to reach the sorcerer. Moments later, Elaryan lies dead on the ground as Torag smashes his head in repeatedly with his giant hammer. Nor races Xhotl into the room to grab the elf's body, then the party flees. Neither Lor nor Nor has a way to raise Elaryan from the dead, and many of their options are blocked by the powers of the Sword of Valor . Finally, in desperation, Nor prays to Angazhan for help, reasoning that the Demon Lord will want to save his follower. The demon that answers the summons is a familiar face. Birgitte, the vampire from the Under-Miami, appears... only now she wears the form of a succubus. Dressed entirely in red, she sports large wings and prominent horns. Birgitte explains that she does not follow Angazhan, but that she answered the summons because her interests align with those of the Ravenous King. In return for several magic items, she casts raise dead , returning Elaryan to action. The companions decide to try using dimension door to travel across the citadel to the other chapel. Although most teleportation spells are blocked by the Sword of Valor, the spell is successful thanks to Elaryan's Abyssal lineage. The heroes find themselves in a temple similar to the one they just left, only decorated with statues of Iomedae. Several paladins sit on the pews, and at the front of the room is Iomedae herself! The goddess explains that she is keeping the demonic forces away from this small sanctuary. She offers to bless the party, and Elaryan readily accepts. However, as she draws the sorcerer close for a kiss, draining his life force, Nor begins to suspect that she is not actually Iomedae at all. Unwilling to start a fight in a room surrounded by paladins (and several suspicious-looking statues), Nor and Lor decide to play along. Nor accepts his own "blessing" (negative level), then the heroes beat a quick retreat. Consulting Aron's map, they find a secret door in the back of the chapel that leads to a series of vaults. n the second vault, they find the Sword of Valor , but it is protected by an iron golem crafted in Iomedae's likeness. A brief combat ensues, in which Elaryan surrenders his will to Angazhan, flying into a rage. In the end, the party is forced to flee again. Nonetheless, the have secured the prize that they came for, so they leave in fairy high spirits. While Elaryan had protected that taking the banner would return the citadel to the Prime Material Plane, they are still on The Abyss. So they fly from the citadel back the direction they had come, careful to skirt the growing forces of devilkind arrayed on the plain before the keep. Everyone who played gains 1,000 XP.
