Tiamat ( pronounced : /ˈ t i ɑː m ɑː t / TEE-a-mat ) was the lawful evil dragon goddess of greed, queen of evil dragons and, for a time, reluctant servant of the greater gos Bane and later A smodeus . Before entering the Faerûnian pantheon , she was a member of the D raconic pantheon , and for some time she was also a member of the Untheric pantheon . Tiamat was also the eternal rival of her brother Bahamut, ruler of the good metallic dragons. As a unique type of chromatic dragon with the traits of the five most common chromatic varieties, Tiamat was a foe to be reckoned with in battle. Along with all the standard powers and godly senses of a deity of her rank, those who saw her fight claimed that her heads were able to cooperate in battle, and that those heads had the ability to use the breath weapons and spell-like abilities common to their species. Although her sheer size prevented claw and kick attacks while on the ground, she was adept at their use while flying. She also had a stinger on her tail that injected a powerful venom on her foes, killing them in agonizing pain.
The Cult of the Dragon , also called the Dragon Cult and the Followers of the Scaly Way and, by the early 1370s DR, the Wearers of Purple , was a semi-religious evil organization venerating undead dragons , or d racoliches , founded by Sammaster , a powerful wizard and former c hosen of Mystra like Elminster . Their belief was that dracoliches were destined to one day rule F aerûn and beyond and that it was their purpose to help this come to pass. They were considered to be a secret society or a beast cult , albeit an overly large and powerful one, and as a mercantile and criminal enterprise.
The Harpers , or Those Who Harp , were a semi-secret organization dedicated to preserving historical lore, maintaining the balance between nature and civilization, and defending the innocent from the forces of evil across the Realms. The Harpers involved themselves in many world-changing events that helped shape the course of F aerûn's destiny. Their power and influence waxed and waned over the years, as their order underwent a series of collapses and reformations. Their reputation amongst the people of the Realms varied just as wildly. They were often seen as wild-eyed idealists, but also just as often seen as insufferable meddlers who could not keep their business to themselves.
The Order of the Gauntlet was a coalition of morally upstanding warriors, knights, paladins and clerics who dedicated themselves to the destruction of evil in F aerûn in the 15 th century DR. They were a unified group, bonded by either their fervent religious beliefs or staunch dedication to enforcing justice in the realms. To these brothers and sisters in arms, evil had to be dealt with and could not be ignored. Members of the order were strong in their faith, using it to stand against evil forces. While this faith ranged from believing in one's personal god, it extended also to those considered close friends, and especially to oneself. Most often, Knights of the Gauntlet venerated either the God of Guardians, Helm; two of the deities of the Triad, Torm and Tyr; as well as the Poet of Justice, Hoar.
The Emerald Enclave was an organisation of d ruids and other nature worshippers based out of the island of lligh ôn off the coast of the Vilhon Reach . They were referred to by many names, including Caretakers , Nature's Chosen , the Circle , and the Chosen of Silvanus. Despite the power of the Vilhonese nations, as of the 14 th century DR they did nothing involving the land and nature without the approval of the Enclave. The Emerald Enclave was renowned for its benevolent deeds as much as it was feared for swift actions against those responsible for crimes against nature. Politicians and drunks gossiped regularly, discussing the Emerald Enclave's actions, eventually leading to exaggerated recounts of true events and an almost-mythical reputation in the Reach. The Enclave's vindictive ways were common cautionary tales in the areas of the Vilhon Reach bordering forests. Despite its reputation, the Emerald Enclave was not an exclusively druidic organization. Its membership also extended to bards and other beings who venerated nature and neutrality. No member of the Enclave could follow paths of good or evil, but apart from that narrow path between light and darkness, the Emerald Enclave imposed little restrictions.
