All Character Sheet Attributes should be editable

I have a player with a magic item that uses hit dice as as resource, but there is no way on the 2024 D&D sheet to manually change the number of hit dice used. After searching around I figured, why not just edit the attribute directly? ITS LOCKED. Why are there non-editable attributes for things that used to be directly editable on the OG 5e sheet? Restore the ability to manually edit things. Heck, make EVERY attribute manually editable, especially for the DM.

Hi Fiadh S.,  First let me preface this by the statement, I feel your pain on this. I do all sorts of things with macros and attributes and require them to be accessible to me. The D&D 5e 2024 sheet is definitely not easily accessible.  Now as to why, the D&D 5e sheet, and the entire Beacon system of sheets are designed to hide attributes from the user. It is advertised to the sheet developers as a feature. Even exposing the attributes to a user is a major deal as the data inside the sheet is not in attribute form. Exposing the attributes means creating a translation between the sheet's data and the attribute. In many cases they made that a one way trip. Perhaps there is a risk to the data if it is editable, I don't know.  In any case, that is just some of the backstory there. I would personally love it if everything was editable, but I don't know if it is going to ever be feasible.
