Your characters are humans fleeing a dead world. The generation ship they inhabited has been adrift for so long that no one remembers where they came from. When they found an inhabitable world, supplies dwindling, they sent down colonization supplies with only a cursory examination. The planet turned out to be more hostile than they expected and home to strange life. There are only a few thousand of you and factionalism has broken out. You'll have to carve out a new life while dealing with threats both internal and external. RIYL: Alpha Centauri, Fallout, that sort of thing.
