Dark Sun 5e

Hello, I am thinking of starting an all good party on Athas. I wrote a small history/back story of where we are when the party starts. If people are interested, it would be on a Wednesday. The time is debatable. Show of hands and D&D experience would be appreciated if you reply. Cheers. ' "Here I stand on the dunes, staring avid at the moons. The Hero's Call starts glowing red, find them or we'll all be dead." -a clip from the moon druid prophecy. My name is Gotho. My master has given me a great burden, to find great hero's in this land of villains and slavers. To understand my plight you must first understand the world I inhabited. This is Athas, a world of twin suns and never ending deserts, but it wasn't always so. The history, as my master tells me, starts with a lush jungle like world brimming with life. Once the major race of the world was the halflings, a peaceful cheery race; now violent tribes of desert cannibals. In the 4th age the nature benders started experimenting with life and death. They soon aligned with the evil elemental clerics of the realm. A war ensued, and the benders and cleric were defeated, but not before turning the sun from blue to yellow; thus destroying the halfling civilization. After the sun changed, it hailed the rebirth. The rebirth brought the new races to the world: The Humans, Gnomes, Dwarves, Elves, and others. The first use of Psionic powers are brought by the rebirth and the new races. Over 300 years later came the birth of Rajaat, the War-Bringer. He learned the secrets of preserving and defiling magic, nearly killing himself in the process. Over 2 centuries, Rajaat refined the use of magic and taught the new races, preserving magic openly, and those of questionable character defiling magic. He decided that humans have the most potential of all to suit his needs. Rajaat began a jihad against the preservers of Athas for the next thousand years. Rajaat sent all but a few of his students away. Using the power of the Pristine Tower and the mysterious Dark Lens Rajaat created his Champions. Each Champion was ordered to eliminate one specific race from the face of Athas in an effort to bring about the return of the Blue Age. The Cleansing Wars began. Kobolds, Goblins, Pixies, Ogres, Orcs and Gnomes were wiped off the face of Athas forever. After 1500 years of Genocide and murder, where the Dead Lands are born and undead stalk the world, Borys of Ebe defeated the Dwarven king and was almost slain in the process. Hamanu told Borys of Rajaat's true plans for Athas. After becoming aware that Rajaat intended to wipe out all races except the halflings, Borys leads the Champions in a rebellion against their master-from which they emerged victorious. Despite their power, the children of Rajaat could not destroy his mortal remains. Instead, Gallard separated the First Sorcerer's essence from his physical form, placing each in a separate location. Aided by the power of the Dark Lens, Gallard created the Hollow, where he placed Rajaat's essence. Through the use of the Dark Lens, Borys rewarded the remaining Champions by beginning their transformations into sorcerer-kings. This process linked each of them to living vortices, which allowed them to grant their followers clerical spells. The Champions realized that Rajaat's prison will not hold. Even segmented, Rajaat's power is supreme and he would one day be free. Hence, the Champions once again used the Dark Lens to transform Borys into the Dragon, whose power would keep Rajaat imprisoned for all time. The transformation causes Borys to become insane, ravaging the land. Borys emerges from his insanity and learns Rajaat's prison is on the verge of collapse. Soon after he collects a levy of 1,000 slaves from each sorcerer-king, using their life force to reseal the First Sorcerer's prison on a yearly basis. Lead by Abalach-Re of Raam, the sorcerer-kings stormed Guistenal and kill Dregoth, Ravager of Giants just before he is to become a true Dragon. The battle destroyed the city, the land, and most of its population. Afterwards, Hamanu threw the Scorcher into the Silt Sea. With the aid of his high Templar Mon Adderath, Dregoth was returned to life as an undead dragon king. The surviving populace was gathered soon after, and construction of New Guistenal begins. With the aid of a wizard named Besteren, Oronis (formerly known as Keltis) developed the preserver metamorphosis spell to counter Rajaat's vile magic. The spell nearly killed him, but in the end Oronis emerged as Athas's first avangion. Oronis gave the preserver metamorphosis spell to a preserver/psionicist named Nerad, who became Athas's second avangion. After revealing himself to the Veiled Alliance of Tyr, Nerad is discovered by King Kalak, who in turn contacts the Dragon. Borys later kills Nerad south of Tyr. In his grief, Oronis hid all copies of the preserver metamorphosis spell. Over the next few hundred years some of the Dragon Kings fell. Borys and others, in a panic to get the 1000 slave levy from every city, kidnapped and imprisoned anyone who can not defend themselves. King Kalak of Tyr was slain by the Heartwood Spear through the combined efforts of Rikus, Agis, Neeva, Tithian, and Sadira. Tithian became the next king of Tyr and freed all slaves. Tyr adopted the Free Year calendar. The Prison of Rajaat is weakening and the Dragon Kings will stop at nothing to keep that from happening. So here we are, year one of the Free year. Dregoth in his city of necromancy, starting the zombie Apocalypse. Borys, the Dragon, rounding up anyone not strong enough, or rich enough, to be free. Slavers, rapers, murderers and the dread, and yet the Hero's Call starts glowing red. I must leave you now in this wold of blistering heat, and black hearten Sorcerer Kings, for my quest has begun.............. "WELCOME TO THE DARK SUN"
Are you DMing?
Yes, I will be DMing. Characters will start level 2, as anything less on Athas is meat. I will be using some make shift rules I have found on forums for Dark Sun. There will be Thrikreen and half-giants as playable races. We wil use the 15 14 13 12 10 8 array.

I am interested (depending on time, I have a reasonably flexible schedule but I am in Europe and I am guessing you are in the US). I have about 30 years of experience with D&D. I played my first Dark Sun game back in 2nd edition AD&D. Playing a dwarven elemental priest if I remember correctly... I have also DM:ed Dark Sun, a campaign from 1-15 or so using 4th edition rules a few years back. Looking forward to see what you make of the setting :)
Hi Mark, I would be very interested in playing. I am a long time gamer, 35 years, and have played every edition of D&D. I am pretty familiar with 5E, having just finished a run through Lost Mines of Phandelver. I am somewhat familiar with Dark Sun, having run some adventures for it back in 2nd Ed. Wednesdays would work fine for me with a starting time around 7:30 PM US Eastern Time. Tossing about the idea of a Half-Giant or Mul fighter, ex-gladiator. Thanks, Jeremy
Hello I am a little new around here in a sense. I would be very much interested in this game as Dark Sun is my favorite setting though of course I am mostly familiar with it from playing AD&D and all the 2e books and even the series of novels. I have not actually had a chance to play 5e so I am not overly familiar with it, but if your willing to have a veteran player of other editions I am sure I could catch on fairly quickly. Anytime of the week or weekend really works with me I have a pretty free schedule and can adapt to whatever other people need. Are we going to do standard playable races of Athas and do you have any preferences on classes such since Dark Sun had some class specifics to its setting and as that was mostly designed for 2e do you have any plans on how to work that into 5e and convert things like that.
I've always wanted to explore the Dark Sun game setting with a group, but never had the opportunity. Not sure what time you had in mind for playing, but if it happens to be starting from 9am-12pm est I would love to join. I work third shift so playing at night is pretty difficult for me. I'm experienced with 5E, and somewhat familiar with Athas from books and the video game.

I may have interest in joining your game depending on day and time of game. I am unavailable throughout the weekend starting Thursday night 8PM EST to following Monday night. I would like to play as a half-orc barbarian tribal marauder and dog master. Note to anyone unfamiliar with Dark Sun : Basically, all gods have been killed. So, divine classes are extremely rare. Magic use depletes the material world of its vitality, all creatures included. Metal is very precious in all forms.
So, I see that there is an interest in Dark Sun. Wednesday if the day for sure. Flushing out the time is the thing. I will be using some of the rules made buy this guy. http://community.wizards.com/content/blog/818796 in my game. The half-orc from the PHB will now be the Mul. The Dragonborn will be the dray. There is no gnomes. Classes will run as normal, with possible tweaks. Sorcerers will have made a deal, or be a bastard child, with a Dragon king or an Avangion. Wizards can chose to defile or preserve. Defile too much and you run risk of losing your humanity. Bards always preserve. Gladiator can be any class with the gladiator/entertainer background. So far I have people early and late in the day. The time I'd like to shoot for is somewhere in the 10AM - 2PM PST. But if I get enough people for another time slot I am also fin with that. I will keep thjis going until we get a group that can match times. Cheers and remember Athas needs heros.
Been thinking about running one of these myself! glad to see more Dark Sun fans
I may think to switch to the half-giant depending on base speed. Is it 40 feet base speed? Or are they naturally slow too?
The speed is 30 feet, They are slow but have a long stride so....... evens out. :) FYI warlocks are going to be exactly the same but the pacts change for flavor. Archfey is now Avangion patron. Fiend is now Dragon King patron. And Old One is now Ancient Mind Lord. Powers are the same, flavor changes. Cheers.
Show of hands for potential players. I am in the PST. Who is avalable in the day and who at night?
I would be interested, but can only play after 5pm CST on weeknights, and no later than 10pm CST.
How are you handling Psionics?

I'd love to join, as well! Very experienced DM and gamer, and it would be good to game a bit instead of DM. However, only evenings work for me.
Sounds really fun. I'm available on Wednesdays. I'm in GMT time, but playing really late doesn't bother me. There's a lot of applications already, though, but I'm giving it a try anyway. I know the rules of 5e pretty well, I've played a few games. I'm up for playing whatever fits the theme (low magic, from what I understand), I have a few character ideas in my head. I just need to know a bit more about the setting.

I'm only available any time on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Also, half-giants being larger would they also get increased weapon size damage? I'm not sure if there is a table for weapon size damage conversion.
Wednesdays @ 4pm Pacific (7pm Eastern) onward for me.
I am working on a quick and dirty Psion class. It will be tweaked as we move on. It is a monk/warlock hybrid. Check it out. http://community.wizards.com/forum/dark-sun/thread... help in balancing would be appreciated.
I am available during your proposed 10AM - 2PM PST time slot on Wednesdays.

7PM is a bit early for me (kids, dinner etc). If the start time is like 11AM-12AM your time I could join in, but I dont want to hold you guys back in any way. I travel a lot, so I will not be participating with 100% attendence regardless.

And if I am playing... I am totally going to make a Dray Athasian Bard.
Hi Mark With our Wednesday free I would love to participate in another Darksun campaign But as you know I might be having a problem attending before 8pm (CEST) due to dinner and kids getting tugged in.
I withdraw from the game. Thank you anyway. Everyone have FUN!
You got me interested. The 10am-2pm slot would work for me perfectly as that's 8pm-12am in my local time. I'm not that experienced roleplayer but I am pretty familiar with D&D. Participating in one 5e game right now.

Hey, I don't know if you have any space left, but I'm pretty interested. I've played a couple of games in the Dark Sun setting so I'm familiar with the basics of it. However I am a bit new to 5e so It might take a session or two for me to get the hang of it. My time is EST to most times would work with me so long as it isn't super late at night. I would prefer the 10am-2pm time though. As for a character, I would probably end up making a Thri-Kreen Ranger or something psionic if the rules for that get worked out.
It looks as if the Official time will be 11AM to 1PM PST. Use LFG to Find me. If you are in let me know. Cheers.
Sorry guys, that play time doesn't work for me as I work with my son when he gets home from school, and he'll be home shortly after the start time.
I can play then, forget my other post i calculated the time zones incorreclty
Are you still looking for people? I have zero experience with D&D5 and only a passing knowledge of the Dark Sun setting but both intrigue me. But apparently I'm too stupid to find the LFG posting for this game (or it's not there any more?), if anyone would be so kind as to post a link to the LFG Posting that'd be greatly appreciated :)
For now the group is full. I will keep any extras in mind in case people drop. Cheers.
