A Note from the CTO, Mike Todd: Stability, Accountability, and Our Path Forward

Dr DM said: This is by far the most annoying thing from Demiplane, as far as I'm concerned. Ok, thanks. I can't yet promise any time frame on improvements to that being live, but our team in charge of this will start investigating and scoping this next week.

Steve W. said: Plural and Greg - For Demiplane, I would appreciate hearing any specifics you have on what is most annoying to you about the integration. We have it a go. I even (regretfully) bought the Daggerheart ruleset on Demiplane. The website feels slow and overdesigned. My players were very confused and annoyed they had to go to another website to create their characters. Importing them to roll20 worked about half the time and was slow. I don’t doubt the performance can be improved, but just simply having to now go through two websites to use a character sheet was far too cumbersome and unnecessary. It was also stifling as a GM. I couldn’t create new NPCs, I could barely modify the in-built creatures I did try to import, and half the time they lost all their stats anyway. I resorted to pen and paper instead and my players spent half the session fighting Demiplane that we just abandoned it after 2 sessions. Again, I understand the features to customize are coming someday, but it was a souring experience out of the gate. I felt completely locked as well, once a game was linked Demiplane to a roll20 game. There was no ability to change the sheet or modify it. It felt quite stifling. If it only supplied rules and stock monster stats without enforcing a locked down character sheet that would have been a much better experience.

An Issue with the Redesigned Page: When on a Game Page there is the Box showing the user who created that game / campaign... There also is the green Button signaling this user is online... And said button overlaps with the username... MAYBE you want to relocate it either more to the left (Avatar) OR to the right and "append" it to the user name... EDIT: One more suggestion that would be REALLY nice to have: The Sidebar on the left dark gray or black (as it is with dark mode enabled) but the RIGHT Sidebar with chat and Results of Roll-Templates etc. still in Light mode! WHY is this necessary? There are a ton (!!!) of community sheets that use Macros that are STILL not compatible with dark mode on Roll20... Be it that numbers are hard to read or generally invisible or that they cannot be read at all... (I am talking solely about sheets on Roll20, NOT those using Demiplane integration)... EDIT 2: Wasn't the PRINT CHARACTER SHEETS supposed to be implemented for ALL Character Sheets (At least those "by Roll20")? The DnD Sheet is STILL (!!!) the only one who has this... It would be really nice - however - to have this for Cthulhu and other Systems as well as the Cthulhu Sheet has a dedicated Sheet for NPCs...

I just wanted to say, that all in I'm pleased with the direction you're taking Roll20. One thing that I've notice though with the character sheets is it doesn't appear to deduct ammo, spell slots, or resources as a character uses them. This was something that you had on the old 2014 character sheets. That would be nice to have on the new 2024 character sheets working.
Hi Greg - Peter from Demiplane here. Thanks for being direct. What you described (friction between sites, restricting GMs, and lost session time) is not the experience we want people having. Several of the areas you've called out maps directly to work already underway on performance, sign-in and syncing flow, and homebrew. There was also a stat-saving issue for a period that has since been fixed. If you're ever back in and using NPCs again, you are able to customize a great deal of the NPC's stat block by selecting the header. Each drawer that opens has an edit command that allows for fairly deep customization. That's not the same as a custom NPC - which is underway - but I wanted to share this if you find yourself using the NPC sheets again. I know first impressions stick. I mainly wanted to acknowledge that the frustrations you raised are understood and tied to areas under active development. Greg said: Steve W. said: Plural and Greg - For Demiplane, I would appreciate hearing any specifics you have on what is most annoying to you about the integration. If you want to chart stability as a way forward, then, Please, please, please introduce a PROPER and EFFECTIVE software QA program. It is not just someone who is working on a new feature banging around on the keyboard to test their new feature. Something like that happened a week or so ago with a new checkmark and it totally scuppered my campaign and at least one other Roll20 user's campaign. Saying the upgrade worked on "most installations" doesn't cut it. I'm retired, so I was able to spend a lot of time last week dealing with the chain of events caused by the upgrade I mentioned. That included deleting a map from one of my campaigns and redesigning it from scratch on a drawing program before I discovered the issue that dogged us could be turned off by unchecking a new checkmark. And I only discovered that on a different topic from someone else whose work was similarly affected. There was no kind of announcement. I was then able to transmog the existing map back into the one I'd deleted and not have to finish the redraw. That's BS , no offence meant. Ultimately, it's also disrespectful to your clients. I encountered this frequently when I first started with roll20 in 2020. Among other things, I recall development of dynamic lighting was breaking javascript applications I tried to develop for one of my games every month or so. :( It was so darn irritating, I ended up giving up my pro membership and gave up using Roll20 for my projects. From a financial PoV, that was 3-4 years of pro membership one of your users did not submit. One of my friends continued to use my account to run an AD&D campaign that is still active. I did re-up this past fall. I spent 20 years working with the consequences of a software company whose definition of software QA seemed to be similar to Roll20s. It was an often very stressful experience that interfered with tradespeople trying to respond to major maintenance emergencies that affected both a university and a hospital (which included peoples' lives). Eventually this CMMS company did formalize how they tested new features, bug fixes, and enhancements. Roll20 is supposed to be FUN and not stressful. But when trying to get D&D running with old friends you first played the game with in the late 70s, it does get stressful when careless development breaks it. -- Tim
