Reboot or Fix?

I was doing some research to see what exactly "The Sundering" is. I haven't read any of the novels, but from what I gathered from the interwebs is it's a fix. According to the FR wikia Ed Greenwood wasn't happy with what Wizards did to FR in 4th edition. So he and Bob Salvatore decided to come up with The Sundering to basically "erase" 4th edition changes. Drizzt is still alive and "The Companions" have been reincarnated as different characters. "The changes to the Forgotten Realms when 4th edition D&D were announced in 2006 were done without the consultation of Ed Greenwood or any of the main Realms authors. Despite entreaties not to go through with them, they happened anyway. Ed and R.A. Salvatore worked together to come up with a plan to fix the inevitable damage that these changes would cause." http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Sundering_(e...
I've read quite a few novels of the Forgotten Realms. When the announcement of some new novels coming out. I was pretty interested in what this new concept of the Sundering, and what it was. Last edition the spell plague was the theme. Some of the geographic locations were altered like the Anauroch Desert was gone and the return of Netheril back from the Shadowfell also Abeir was back. It looks like the Anauroch is back in 5th edition. I read the first book in the Sundering series called the Companions. With out any spoilers. Ya Drizzt is a little older, and the companions Regis, Wulfgar,Cattibre, and Bruenor Battlehammer is back. The book is about them being reincarnated to help Drizzt, and there perception growing up again. The Sundering is also about some Gods picking out mortals to be there champions called the Chosen. I haven't read anymore of the series.
Yeah. From what I read they want to, basically, pretend the spell plague never happened. I read synopsis for all the new books and from what I can tell from the reviews on Amazon are all but Bob's and Greenwood's are good. There were a LOT of harsh reviews for Greenwood's book which is surprising. I won't spoil anything, but locations that were saved are destroyed again and it seemed Greenwood sacrificed writing just to have things put back the way they were before 4th.
When it comes to locations being saved and destroyed. Well that's why its called Forgotten Realms j/k. I'm not sure what happens if anything to the Realms during AD&D and 3.5 edition Time of Troubles of Epic proportion like 4th's spell-plague and 5th edition Sundering to the landscape and old gods rising up. Personally I enjoy Salvatore's Drizzt's series and I'm a fan of Richard Lee Byers Haunted Lands series. Ed Greenwoods novels not so much. When it comes to the original question Reboot of Fix? That's a debatable question for sure, and best leave that alone for now.
lol. Ok, we'll leave it at that.
To add I'd be mad too if I were Ed though. He did create the world after all. I don't want to seem like I'm bashing it. I myself loved the Icewind Dale Trilogy. Especially when you think Bruenor is gone then the book ends with "a rock shifts". Holy crap that was awesome!

Yes of course if your not consulted on your own creation/product . I'm sure I would be upset and would have words too . However, Whats the bottom line deal with Ed Greenwood, Wizards, and Hasboro? Did wizards have to consult Ed or anyone else? Did he sign over the certain rights? I was looking up one of my favorite npc Lord Sloth (Krynn) I heard there was a law suite over taking that character out of the realms and into Ravenloft. The original creators won and he didn't appear into anymore Ravenloft games, and may of been compensated for doing so? Personally I like the story line of the spell plague. In a world of magic something like that is bound to happen LOL. The Sundering I can see a new start from the previous story line sure. Na, I don't think your bashing Greenwood. I got the Icewind Dale Box set some weeks ago. I'm looking forward to playing that setting as well. Gauntlgryum is the last book I read with Drizzt before the Sundering.
Interesting. I didn't know about the lawsuit.
With Ed Greenwood and Wizards I haven't heard anything about a suit. I was just saying if I were Ed I would of sued. Not being consulted at all with the making of 4th edition. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Soth Its under Debate if you care.
Oh man. Yeah that brings up a whole new can of worms. If Weis and Hickman (and Greenwood for that matter) created fictional characters while working for TSR then wouldn't the copyright belong to the corporation? Since WotC bought TSR then would all said copyrights be transferred? I remember Image Comics was formed in the 90's by all the elite artists from Marvel Comics (Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Rob Leifeld, etc) because of this very issue. They tried to say the characters they created under Marvel were owned by the artists, but Marvel said nope it is all our property and they could do whatever they wanted with it.

Cool blog! I agree mostly with the writer. I don't allow dragonborn in my campaign either because of that reason (they are bullshit, lol). Also they just don't fit in with my homebrew world's history. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS The article failed to mention one change. In Greenwood's Sundering novel a certain ancient elven city is once again destroyed. Elminster nor Mystra apparently did anything to stop it.
