how do token sizes work?

i'm just curious how the ultimate sizes of the tokens work, as in...i drag and drop a token on to the board, it's huge, so i resize it to my liking, then delete it. now if i go back in my library and drag it out, it's not the size i made it, but the size it pops out as is quite nice, as if it's been normalized for the board size. any explanation about this?
If you use the grid, the token is force resized to fit into a square. You can resize it, but not to specific size or scale, just dragging the size handle and sheer guessing what seems to be the right size. Which makes it nearly impossible to have consistent sizes.
