Planning Your Character Arc

Hi all, As Orryn plans to go the Arcane Trickster route with his forest gnome rogue, he has asked that his character come across a spellbook before this so that it makes sense story-wise for him to suddenly gain magical powers; i.e. he finds a book, studies it for a few levels, and by the time the rules say Orryn can cast spells, it makes sense since he's been studying this spellbook he came across. I said sure, thanks for thinking ahead! but warning: if it's a spellbook, it might not come as easily as just "stumbling across it" you may still have to work for it ;) ;) ;) This goes for anyone else too, if you have something like this, that helps plan your character arc ahead (or an enemy your character is dying to get revenge with, a long lost family member you'd hope to see in the future again, etc.) post that here!
I don't want to work for it, I want it easy...
Ysbern Stormhammer (Kirk) said: The only thing like this that applies to Ysbern is the Sea Monster that destroyed the Ship he used to work on. He'd love to do some damage to it, as far as what type of monster it is, I left the part intentionally vague so you could do whatever you want with it. Other than that, he does want to buy a ship someday, that's his main goal. If Ysbern can make it back to Kheir alive, then this would be a great quest. Rob said: I don't want to work for it, I want it easy... Sure, see that spellbook lying there? Just take it. I'm sure no one will notice :P
Hehehe.. *Rubs hands together*.

Belanor may run into some problems if he ever meets anyone that knew him in the past. Whether this may be his family, his former bandit crew or some local authorities, I leave to your discretion as a DM.
The only thing I can think of is the way of the shadow path that Tarnach is taking, but that's already accounted for in his backstory. I did steal my trinket though, the hilt of the broken sword of a famous adventuring ancestor of mine. You might be able to use that as a hook or something, but I still plan on keeping the hilt so I can learn blacksmithing and create the perfect blade for myself with that hilt.
As you all play and your characters become more and more defined, you may think of something, so this channel is here if necessary.
While not a tangible item, my character is searching for those Jixian that had attacked his village and killed his family and friends. So, maybe letting me know what he knows now, and building up some more clues would be awesome! With the Ranger switch at first level up, I'll be getting favored terrain and favored enemies. I figure I would play up the terrain that we had been adventuring in, but so far it is indoors mainly. Favored enemies gets languages, but I figure it wouldn't make sense to learn that aspect of the feature until out of the jail, even if I level up while in jail.
As DM I promise that I am going to work with each of you individually to make sure that I incorporate theseimportant elements into the game. However, I would want to introduce each of them at appropriate times (whether that's next session or level 15, depends). Also: Christopher D. said: With the Ranger switch at first level up, I'll be getting favored terrain and favored enemies. I was thinking that since the Ranger chooses a favored enemy every 4-5 levels or so (right?) that you could choose Drow first - thus getting the Elven or Jixian language ( Jixian language equates to the RAW Underdark language and is spoken between mind flayers and drow although common still does exist, which is unexplained as to how two planets speak the same common language - why this is, is something that may be discovered later on ). Unless you really fuck up, lol, you shouldn't be running into any mind flayers at this low levels. But maybe later on when you pick another favored enemy, you could go Mind Flayer. How does this sound? And I have a question for Tam: Belanor (Tam) said: Belanor may run into some problems if he ever meets anyone that knew him in the past. I know he left the Solice region because of his bloodlust, but what were the family relationships he had specifically? Also, now that Belanor is a monk, is he still fighting the bloodlust feelings or have these quelled like his savior that he murdered, Balon? I'm trying to dig deeper into each character here so make sure during the games you have your character discuss themselves between the party. So I would encourage PC-to-PC roleplay!!
Dm Rob, sounds good. If favored enemy is humanoid, I can choose two races of humanoid, so elves and something else.

Also, if your long-term goal is to build a ship and put the flag of the Sea Dragon on it - start saving gold and/or looking for opportunities to make close friends with sea captains. This will obviously be easier when (if) you get back to Kheir, but don't think it isn't also possible on Jixia - there is a lot that you guys don't know about that planet. Also, awhile back you asked me about creating your own spells and I have been thinking it over a lot and came to a solution. ANY spell from ANY supplement of ANY edition (1e-5e) is allowed -- but if it's not 5e, you have to send me the image from the book it's from, and allow me to convert it into 5e. Then I'll determine when and how you would work towards learning it (xp/gold/level/spell slot cost)

Marco: Tarnach does have the smithing tools and the hilt. All he needs now is to find a blacksmith and pay him the fee of service. If Tarnach wants to do it himself, he has to become proficient in tools: smithing. Hey, does anyone know how a PC learns a proficiency in another skill after level 1? I can't recall and don't see it in the PHB. If Tarnach wants the Hilt to become a magic sword (or at least a sword with better stats than your standard katana/longsword) he will have to discuss how with a magic-using blacksmith, and then collect the materials or pay for the materials. Lastly, who was this ancestor of Tarnach's? Why was he so important to the Norixius clan?

They thought he was a sadistic monster who wanted nothing more than to hurt others. Belanor thought that his family is a bunch of pretentious pacifist pricks and thus, he left the village voluntarily before anything serious happened. As for his bloodlust, it has generally subsided but still dwells within him. He keeps it under control through his monastic rituals throughout most circumstances (including combat), but there's no telling what would happen if he ever reaches his mental limit. A good analogy for his mindset is that of a 10 year drug-free former addict. When being offered a bag of heroin, the former addict knows enough to decline, but all it takes is that one bad day... DM Rob said: Hey, does anyone know how a PC learns a proficiency in another skill after level 1? I can't recall and don't see it in the PHB. Outside of Multiclassing or Bard skills, You can only learn new profiencies through the Skilled Feat and through "Training" in the Downtime section (page 187 PHB).

I'm pretty sure that I do have proficiency with smithing tools. You asked me once because I got an extra proficiency from becoming a monk or something, and I chose smithing tools. As for learning a new proficiency, it's covered in the PHB p187. It basically amounts to 250 days of training at 1gp cost per day, though the DM can switch that around at his/her discretion. I don't know yet whether I want to make a magic weapon or not. I just don't know that much about the benefits of them. As for my ancestor, let's call her Surina Norixius. During the annual coming of age ceremony, in which younger dragonborn are escorted into the wilderness by their elders, then monitored as they attempt their first solo hunt, Surina was once of the few guards left behind in the festivities who was still sober. Vigilant, she noticed the host of goblins and bugbears moving to strike the gates of the village. She quickly closed the gates, and while the goblins tried to batter the gates down, she set about commanding the remaining forces. They set up impromptu traps of pit spikes and acid splashes. They dropped burning alcohol from on top of the walls, and flung flaming sand down on the battering team. Hours after their arrival, the host broke through the gates and were confronted with the other traps awaiting them. In addition, Surina instructed the youths to collect fecal matter from the latrines, place it in containers, and set it on fire, hurling it from the roftops at the invaders. Morning saw the return of the new adults into a village with burning poop, pools of acid, and the red dragoness Surina dancing on top of a flaming pyre of goblins. How's that?
Kirk, I look forward to the spells you find. & Marco, If I remember correctly - your monk class granted you the smithing tools as equipment, but nowhere did you gain it as a skill proficiency? So you have the tools but you don't know how to use them? I will double check this.
I'm bumping this post because this is also where you guys can discuss other character goals. Basically, use this as the place to give me ideas on what you want incorporated into the game for your characters. Vetari's spellbook, for example, I'm hoping will become more prominent here in the near future. Darvin, can you elaborate on your hometown and the Jixians who pillaged it and murdered your family? ~~~
For Marit, it's all about the songs. Any chance I get where a performance gets us out of a sticky situation, or I can trade a song for something is a good day for him. Overall i'd love to get some kind of weapon that is also an instrument.
Now that there is a Wizard in the group, I will start trying to read his spell book during rests. I figure I can memorize a few of them by the time we hit level 3. Longer term, I need to figure out a way to get money sent back to the orphanage. and get that Wand of Invisibility!
Noted! Thanks guys!

So, maybe letting me know what he knows now, and building up some more ... Chris, I've been thinking more about this and even went bback and read Darvin's back story again. According to that, Darvin's family was murdered 10 years ago - and the Averliss region is far from the portal which means a) Darvin has had a long time to investigate this, and b) The Jixians must have sent a covert spy group there for some nefarious reason, because they were far behind enemy lines. let's come up with what Darvin learned in the past 10 years - maybe he's even narrowed it to a general, or a name, and he's hunting those enemies to avenge his family.
I'd like to perhaps start a side quest so that I can search for a legendary smith with an intimate knowledge of magic, so that I might buy him/her and their skills at an understandably higher rate than normal. Through this smith I would reforge the sword of my ancestor Surina Norixius, using some extra materials from my adventures such as the two black gems that I got from the zombies. Through this smith I would also make the sword a magic weapon if you'll allow it, then upgrade it as necessary.
BTW sorry I'm not as present as the rest of you but I don't use my computer for much, and mobile sucks in regards to posting messages on here.

You'll just need to navigate to a settling of moderate size and procure the services of a smith. Any smith can mold the black gems and a new blade to the hilt; you can start there, and ask around for greater legendary / magical smiths. The only problem is that you're in prison right now -- however, remember, the Half Deads have smiths. But outside in Jixia, you'll have more luck (if you can stay alive!)
Of course. That was definitely part of the plan. I want to send out a network of informants to visit the largest sources of magical knowledge when we get back to kheir, or in Jixia if we find it to be less hostile than we assume. But I definitely want it to be the same smith, and I'll be assisting it too or something. I'll be searching for any kind of rare metal as well if it's present. Like maybe the traditional mythril or adamantite, but hopefully something from a fallen meteor to make it more special.
DM Rob, and others, I've been reading the posts. I haven't had a ton of time to write back but wanted to take a chance to do so. First, I love Marco's idea and I have a plan! Now, in response to what you had said about me: "Darvin, can you elaborate on your hometown and the Jixians who pillaged it and murdered your family?" My hometown in the Meteoritans is called Naporia. While I, and my hometown, are in a much more wilderness area, we are not savages and do have commerce and trade with outside regions. I'm gonna go with the villages are composed largely of family units that are closer or further related. While fairly self sufficient, many villages do have specialties that give them an edge in trading. Some villages may be excellent at gathering herbs, or medicine men, or may capture exotic animals for menageries. My village's specialty was in smithing. While they made many typical tools, axes, spades, spears, etc., they were known for working with unique ore the remnants of the meteorite that left the crater. Such weapons were highly valued by kings, mages and warlords for their 'exceptional' ;) properties. While most of my family was killed, not all bodies were recovered and those missing have long been assumed dead, (but a distant hope remains). Some of the missing were some of our most skilled smiths. The Jixians that pillaged the village took our valuable metals (plat/gold/silver) and any of our meteorite ore or weapons. They came in without warning and seemed to know where to look for the primary stores of our ore and weapons, taking nearly all of it. Anything else taken seemed to be more taken opportunistically, rather than searched out. My immediate family, parents and one of my brothers were killed. One of my uncles and sister went missing, along with a couple other members of the village. My uncle was one of the most skilled smiths, and my sister was training under him. The Jixians were organized and uniformed. They were not a band of ruffians, but seemed trained and practiced. They were not invincible and we, my village, did take down a couple of them. However, as the Jixians left, they took their fallen comrades, leaving precious few clues. ---------- "Chris, I've been thinking more about this and even went bback and read Darvin's back story again. According to that, Darvin's family was murdered 10 years ago - and the Averliss region is far from the portal which means a) Darvin has had a long time to investigate this, and b) The Jixians must have sent a covert spy group there for some nefarious reason, because they were far behind enemy lines. let's come up with what Darvin learned in the past 10 years - maybe he's even narrowed it to a general, or a name, and he's hunting those enemies to avenge his family." Initially after the attack, the survivors scattered to other villages or places unknown. Bad memories and loss of the skilled labor made it difficult to stay. Darvin left the the village like the rest and was initially over come with despair and frustration. He traveled without purpose or destination for a almost five years, surviving by his wits and skills (hence the first level of Rogue). By chance, he came across a merchant claiming to have wares from Jixia. While Darvin would have paid it no mind, one thing stood out, a sword of his village's style of the meteorite ore. It looked new, and unused, and had a maker's mark... his uncle, and a year, two years after his village was attacked! That gave Darvin hope and focus. From there, he had somewhere to go and believe in being able to track down those responsible. Now with physical evidence of his uncle being alive, his memories of the attack and information from the merchant, he had leads. He has followed those over the course of and got a name to go with the face of one of the attackers.: Hadarai Nai'lo. That drow seemed to be a leader amongst the attackers and is the one who murdered his parents. Trying to track down Hadari got him capture, and his family's sword was taken too. But now, so close, he won't give up again! ------- So, the smithing background and potential importance of that may tie in well with someone looking for exotic and special smiths!
Chris, that is wonderful!! Thank you so much for putting a lot of thought into it. I can totally make this work and tie it all in. Perhaps Darvin and Tarnach can therefore have a similar goal -- to find Darvin's Uncle, who is named Elifaz. Finding and killing Hadarai Nai'lo is Darvin's main goal.
That sounds incredible. Really intricate story there.
Hey guys, just figured I'd post the process of my sword creation, because I do intend to design and draw a full image of what I want the sword to look like. Most likely, I won't do a very good job but I'm still going to try and do my best. My first draft is included here and amounts to nothing more than just a copy and past editing of multiple pictures and some notes. It should be said however, that I wasn't paying attention when I made this last night and I said the sword was going to have blue instead of purple.

I think you're too hard on yourself -- this is an AWESOME job. Look at that hilt, it is so badass. Where did you get those curling silver dragons? I would think, though, that your family hilt would have black dragons, since that is your lineage, and this is Surina Norixious's goblin-slaying hilt. This is my idea for your sword moving forward: Whenever downtime is awarded, spend downtime days and gold to contribute to the crafting / upgrading of the Norixius Sword . The sword will be built in increments. Increment 1 is to mount the hilt to a special blade, because I would assume functionality is more important initially, than looks. COST: because Tarnach is proficient with smith's tools, only 10 Gold + 3 Days Downtime. Increment 2 is to become proficient with longswords. You want your blade to do d8 damage. That d8 damage is only possible with a longsword, which Tarnach is not proficient with. If you gain proficiency in longswords I will allow you to use the Norixius Sword at d8 damage and also give it the Monk Keyword, since you crafted it. You can gain proficieny with longswords either through leveling up and making the necessary character upgrade choices, or by taking the Weapon Master feat. I assume Tarnach, having just began his career as a private investigator back on Kheir, is good at finding out who in a town (even a Jixian town) can train him. COST: if spending downtime on this increment, it will cost 125 Gold + 125 Days. Therefore, I suggest taking the feat. Or you can simply craft the Norixius Sword as a d6 Blade, and save the feat / time for other things. Increment 3 is to attach the black quartz gem (unless you find something better) to the hilt. This is easy. COST: 5 Gold, 1 Day Downtime. Increment 4 is to add purple inlay into Norixius Sword's blade. COST: If you can do this with the mineral you spoke of, it costs 10 Gold, 2 Days Downtime, or if you want, with a +50 Gold augment to the enchantment described in Increment 5, you can add a permanent purple light enchantment to that part of the blade that goes on/off with a command word. Increment 5 is to add a magical enchantment to it. At this stage I will give the sword a +1 masterwork rating plus 1 additional low-magical effect (such as +d4 Acid Damage) This is much more expensive, and requires spending the time to find such an enchanter. COST: Finding an enchanter requires 5 successful DC 15 Persuasion or Investigation checks, each success awards 1 Day of Research to the goal of 5, and costs an additional + 5 Gold + lifestyle costs. A failure on the rolls do not add a success to the pot, but still cost the 5 Gold + lifestyle costs. Then the cost of having the enchanter enchant the Norixius Sword with a +1 enchantment depends on the enchantment, but for now I'll say you can choose 500 Gold and 50 Days, 1,000 Gold and 25 Days, or 2,000 gold and 10 Days. ADDITIONALLY, if the story leads Darvin to find his uncle, Elifaz, then Elifaz can provide the enchantment at 1,000 Gold, 5 Days. During all downtime days, unless otherwise noted, you can maintain a modest lifestyle without having to pay, or maintain a comfortable lifestyle at an additional 1gp/day (half the cost). These are my thoughts for Einur: There is a Githyanki Knight rumored to possess an arcane artifact that can return the souls of animals to small statuettes. The small statuette then functions as a Figurine of Wondrous Power : Einur would be able to return as a Large-sized Ferret that Tarnach can train as a mount. I would create "Large Magical Mount Einur's" statblock if this was accomplished. You'd have to track down this Githyanki Knight, and convince him to perform the ritual for you, though -- a quest in its own right, and perhaps something that Tarnach would choose to spend his downtime on instead of crafting his sword right away (choices, choices!)
After doing that for Tarnach, I realize it would make sense to figure out a "downtime plan" for each character. That way, I can award downtime when it makes sense (much more common after escape from prison) and that will allow your characters to pursue their individual endeavors in the time between sessions. Who wants me to do their plan next? Call dibs!
Well I wanted to keep my plan for Einur secret but oh well. I'll take the shortsword path instead. And yeah it looks cool but like I said, that isn't going to be the final design. Think of it as a general outline, a schematic without color. Just a shape of what I want the sword to look like. I'm still working on trying to draw a digital image from scratch in photoshop but its so tough. And even then, it isn't going to be textured to look real or anything like I wanted it to. But I'm still going to do my best.
Marco G. said: Well I wanted to keep my plan for Einur secret but oh well. We can still go your other route for Einur as we discussed.
Let's see who can figure out the name of the swords name.
Whoops, forgot to actualy post the image lol.
Translated from page 124 of the player's Handbook: SINGING SHADOW Nice name!
Yeah I thought so. Took me forever to find one that looked cool in Draconic. I tried translating a lot of different variations like Song of Night into draconic through an online translator for an older version of d&d and then translate that into the draconic alphabet letters but the results just didn't look right. So instead we get this, And I'm satisfied with both the name, and the draconic letters.
And here's draft 2 of the sword. I finally managed to understand photoshop and threw this together after a few hours work, and even more hours wasted time learning. Now I just need to find an artist online who can do more detailed, textured, rendered stuff so I can get a nice snazzy digital image of this.
Singing Shadow looks pretty fuckin' deadly!
It seems I must change this, since the DMG says it's cheaper than I thought (changes in bold): DM Rob said: Increment 5 is to add a magical enchantment to it. Regarding down time activity, Darvin isn't a crafter and will probably focus on pursuing his character plot hook (see below copied from above). Though, bills must be paid and he is a bounty hunter (but is still good aligned). So, he'll take up a case to find a burglar, catch a prison escapee, hunt a bandit, etc. (These can be mini adventure hooks or quick downtime activity depending.) He's less interested in magic weapons/armor and more interested in the other wearable magic items (belts, gloves, etc.). Why? I think they're interesting, so Darvin thinks they're interesting. --- Hook: Perhaps Darvin and Tarnach can therefore have a similar goal -- to find Darvin's Uncle, who is named Elifaz. Finding and killing Hadarai Nai'lo is Darvin's main goal.

I have matters to deal with regarding a family of Illithid named Lethen and a Wand of Invisibility. I'd also be interested in learning of more mindflayer prisons that can be shut down. I want to shut down this whole oppressive regime.
This thread is amazing. Holy crap and I falling behind! Going to read the whole thing tonight.

Finding and killing Hadarai Nai'lo is Darvin's main goal. Darvin, when I award downtime you can either choose to spend your time... Hunting leads that steer you towards Hadarai Nai'Lo. You will be awarded 1 "clue" after each 5 days of downtime spent searching on Jixia, but it takes you 10 days to get a clue on Kheir. Each clue may steer you and the party in a different direction, or it may be a piece to the puzzle. The cost of the days searching for clues = Lifestyle expenses +1 additional GP for expenses related to drawing out information (drops to 5 silver with a DC 15 Persuasion/Intimidation roll per day). When you get 3 clues , you will know the whereabouts of Hadarai Nai'Lo. When you kill him, you will discover the whereabouts of your Uncle, Elifaz . When you find your uncle, he may be able to point you in the direction of your sister... If you choose to spend your downtime days making money (by bounty hunting, catching burglars, etc...) the cost will be determined based on the event, so we will deal with that when that comes to pass. Basically I see it as a gamble ... based on some rolls (and how clever Darvin is) you will either succeed, and make money, or fail, and lose money.
Rob said: I have matters to deal with regarding a family of Illithid named Lethen and a Wand of Invisibility. I'd also be interested in learning of more mindflayer prisons that can be shut down. I want to shut down this whole oppressive regime. Rob, see above with Darvin searching for Hadarai Nai'Lo - the same goes for you in finding where the Lethen illithids reside, and thus your wand. Get 3 clues. Note that for both you and Darvin, I may also weave clues into the story of the main campaign, not just during downtime. For finding the key to the mindflayer prisons, and shutting down the regime, that will come with time and is a main theme of the campaign. My goal is for the party to eventually work alongside Kheiron army generals in the war and assist them in cutting off the head, so to speak. Another thing that I would see Orryn spending downtime on would be figuring out how to send coin to Donolla Darkbottom for the orphans, or even offering his time at an orphanage. Also, various Robin Hood type things?
I have an issue with something Rob. You said that your goal "is for the party to eventually work alongside Kheiron army generals in the war and assist them." This implies we will be subservient to them, and I feel we're already superior. Expect me to challenge them for control over the armies lol. At a game of luck of course. Gotta have my homefield advantage.
Also, I presume Darvin and I can help each other on locating clues towards the location of Hadarai Nai'lo correct? And is there any way to incorporate my Private Investigation experience into this?

Never think yourself the strongest in a world of fantasy, for there is always someone stronger." Certainly, if Darvin succeeds on his Persuasion/Intimidation roll in a settlement, at the same time you succeed on an investigation roll, you will gain 2 days towards the next clue, at the cost of 1. You may remember that the drow who leads the voidbrella caravan is Haradai Nai'Lo's sister, which I will count as a clue if you succeed in questioning her.
