I’ve decided to toss my hat into the DM ring once again. I’m looking for
5 players interested in creating a campaign setting with me and then
playing in it. I want to use D&D 5e for the base with a few tweaks.
Firstly, throwing out all the races & dieties; part of creating the
campaign will be that we come up with new races and cultures! Second,
using 2d10 instead of d20, and nerfing hp a bit for a grittier game
curve. At a guess, my games are about a 40/30/30 mix of combat,
exploration, and social interaction; but i’m flexible if the players
tend to favor one of those aspects. We’ll be using Microscope to
establish the campaign setting.
The game will be run on roll20. Campaign creation will probably take
place in a google-hangout. Microphone needed, webcam not needed. My
schedule limits me to playing every other week, I’d like to pick one day
and time and play every other week for about 4-5 hours. My time zone is
eastern and would prefer to start playing mid afternoon into the
evening (aprox 2-6 or 4-8).
I know that it sucks trying to apply for a game, so I’m not going to
ask you to jump through a ton of hoops, but I’d still like to see a bit
of effort and creativity. If you’re interested and available for a
steady game here is what I’d like you to do: Post a short
introduction/description for a race or minor deity that you’ve created
or helped to create. No need to make stats but the strength/power of a
race should be about standard for 5e, and should include a short
description of the most prevalent culture of the race. One other caveat
is that the race as a whole should have had a singular purpose at one
point in its past; the task or purpose for which it was created. Some or
all members have almost certainly deviated from this purpose a long
time ago. Minor deities should be in the vein of petty greek/roman gods,
the aedra/daedra of elder scrolls, and also the numerous and obscure
infernal/demonic lords.
Thank you very much for reading this and I appreciate your time very
much. I’m going to make a decision in about 48 hours and I’ll PM five of
the applicants who’s submission I find the most interesting. It’s not a
writing competition, and there is no minimum or maximum entry size. If
you don’t get chosen to play, you will at least be there in spirit
because I will try and incorporate all of the ideas into the campaign
that we put together, and I might even be able to release the finished
compilation for all of you. Once again, I appreciate your time very
much. Good luck and have fun!
EDIT: A request for scope has been made so I'll add a few more bricks
onto the wall of text. I'm going to keep things generic, I have a solid
idea but I'm going to keep it flexible because I'm not as creative as 6
people.
A major deity is born alone. He takes the stuff of chaos and travels
to the void and creates a world. The world is a masterpiece of living
clockwork (not literally). Flora and fauna are created to fulfill a
purpose. The deity decides to take a step back and enjoy his flawless
gem. He creates a race of intelligent but not sentient creatures to tend
to creation and guide the evolution and breeding of the living beings
to stay within the will of the creator.
Eventually the world is noticed by the outsiders, a group of powerful
beings (lesser dieties). They covet the world and scheme to take it
from the major diety. The give many of the races of the world the gift
of sentience. Suddenly the creatures are not bound by instinct and can
decide for themselves what they want. The flawless machine begins to
fail as the races abandon their tasks in pursuit of their own wants. The
creator is displeased orders a purge of the defective elements. The
overseers, executors of the dieties will attempt to wipe out the
sentient raaces. they breed living weapons and war beasts. The outsiders
offer their help to the sentients, in exchange for worship and
sacrifice they lend aid to the sentients. The outsiders grow stonger and
with the help of the rebellious races they bind and banish the major
diety.
Time passes and the outsiders succumb to infighting and squabbaling.
Their followers war against each other. Eventually the secret of arcane
magic is found (wizardry & sorcery). People in tune with the natural
world learn the secret language of the living world and can communicate
with it and ask for assistance (druid/ranger). Even the ability to
steal power from the outsiders and other beings is discovered (warlocks
are not given power, they steal it).
We'll start our history crafting right after the binding of of the creator...
