Notes from First Test

Ran my first test of the Roll20 app from the site. Overall, things went very well indeed and everyone had lots of fun with the game. The app ran smoothly and everyone liked it. Did run in to one or two minor difficulties though. First, sound quality on the voice chat was a little rough in spots. This is probably at least partially due to the fact that we assembled from all over the country and likely had some latency issues. Second, one user couldn't even get the voice chat software to load on Firefox. Don't know if this is a known issue or not, but I note it here for completeness. Switching to Chrome fixed it. A 'push-to-talk' option would be nice with the voice chat as well. Might keep folks from stepping all over each other if they aren't sure someone is done talking. Maybe the portraits could highlight or something along those lines if someone has the button held down. On the character sheets and various tokens, perhaps it is better to change the 'Is a PC' option to "Controlled by User" so we as GMs know that that is going to make even NPCs controllable on the board and available for the turn tracker. IT took about ten minutes to work out why I couldn't do that. When a player changes their name in a game, it would be nice if all the items (sheets, tokens, etc.) that are controlled by that player auto-update to the new name. I'm not talking about the 'Speak as" function, but about the actual players name being changed in app. (for example 'Susan' changes her name to 'Sue'). We had someone lock themselves out of controlling their tokens because of it and another 15 minutes or so were spent working out why. As I said though, overall it was a very enjoyable session and the app worked very well. I'm pleased to say that this is the easiest VTT I have even had to use and I've gone through a fair few of them. It certainly was much easier to start using than many of the others out there.
Very easy to use interface. I have tried it out and am enjoying it now. I play in one game with some friends from the states and am running two games with folks around the world (one in china, one in Finland, and a few in the UK). What a way to reach out and play !
