Languages

It would be very cool if it was possible for the GM to type in the names of various languages (under campaign settings, allowing maybe 10 to 20 different slots) that can be used in the game, and then by typing some function in front of the chat message, for instance: GM has typed in that languages available include "Elvish, Russian and Sign Language" Player A controls Character A who has been assigned (by the GM) Language Russian and Language Sign Language. Player types: /L "Russian" [Insert message] Only Players who have a character who also has Language Russian assigned, and the GM will be able to read the message. To everyone else, it just says "Character A speaks a language you do not understand". I've seen this being available in chat functions in multiple MMO games online, and it was a nice function. It'd be cool to transfer it to roll20.

You can do this by creating a character for each language and giving players whose characters know the language control on the language Chatacter. Then you just whisper to that character and only the controlling players see it. (Be sure to have the GM explicitly on there as well. Not ideal, but a good work around.
Thanks for the tip. It's clumsy, it's not pretty but you're right. It works. Still, I'd love to have this feature added for realz.

Me too! =D
I would suggest if you set up language sheets, create abilities like /w LanguageName ?{message} That's basically what I did, although I used a modified version of Steven's original language script to make it display gibberish in the chat for everyone based on the language. His original version of the language script is here.. <a href="https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/435782/script-wh" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/435782/script-wh</a>... but it wasn't really complete in the preview, and something happened to his gist account so he lost the completed version. he rewrote it later but the interface was a lot different... here is the new version... <a href="https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1169270/script-w" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1169270/script-w</a>... Both still use character sheets for each language, but they handle the input for speaking as a language differently. I would still love to see this added in as an official part of roll20 though.
Another excellent substitute, albeit slightly more technical. I will have my group's code-monkey take a look at this, I'm sure he will be excited. I regret to inform that my technical capabilities computer wise extends only to extremely simple coding, so I doubt I will be able to gauge the full potential of this on my own. Regardless, thank you for bringing this to my attention!
If you decide you like the old style of using it better and you want an expanded version with more languages let me know. right now my version has all the languages from the Pathfinder core rule book and first bestiary(except vegepygmy) plus a couple of others.
Well thanks, but I suspect we will have to do some changes to the original. We play world of darkness, so our language needs are actually limited to real world languages.
hmmm. the scripts I linked to just do letter substitution based on a different alphabet that you specify, so I don't know how useful they will be in your situation.
Well, it's not like I intended for it to automatically translate or anything, I just want the language to seem like gibberish to anyone who isn't supposed to be able to read the language.
