Suggestion for 1st Tabletop Game

Hey, me and some of my friends are looking for a Fantasy genre tabletop rpg to play. I'm the only one with any tabletop experience, and I played D&D(don't know what edition) once at a local store. I would prefer the core rulebooks cost $20 or under. If anyone has a idea, game they like, or any tips for making the game a little more newb-friendly, please let me know. I haven't purchased any books yet. Thanks for your time!
Search for Purple Worm Dot Org, they have all of the AD&D2E rules online, it is a fast clean site and we use it as our Campaign "bible" making it under $0, which most people can afford...

This post is a bit off topic. How about we pull it back in a bit by talking about games that are played on Roll20 that are available for under $20... From The Orr Group Industry Report : Al e. already mentioned 2e resources for $0. Dungeon World is available as a PDF for less than $20, 13th Age has an SRD like 3/3.5 DnD and Pathfinder. Dragon Age RPG has free quick start rules and a PDF that fits the criteria. There are several versions of Fate that would be affordable. Universalis (a Story Telling Game) is likewise priced well.

Basic Fantasy RPG has a new core rules release that is FREE to download, and they sell a nice printed copy "at cost on Amazon which comes to $4 for the book. Excellent. It is similar to 1980's Basic D&D. In the chart that The Aaron posted, BFRPG is considered within the "Old School Revival (OSR)" category of games. There are dozens of people playing it on Roll20. It is one book. It is easy to learn as a Player. It's a good one to GM. I don't know if it is "easy" to learn to GM it, but it is as easy as any GM'ing could be in D&D types of games. Message me and ask about "Basic fantasy" if you have questions, because I would be happy to help teach you some tricks for how to GM this game on Roll20 specifically, if you decide to play it. The "math" in the stats of this game is simple. For that reason it is easy to program-up some basic "Macros" (which are like dice shortcuts to make it 1 click to roll your attack or do other actions). Roll20 has a free Character Sheet made for BFRPG. http://www.amazon.com/Basic-Fantasy-Role-Playing-Game-3rd/dp/1503334945/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&keywords=Basic+Fantasy+Role-Playing+Game+3rd+Edition
Thanks guys! I might look at the Basic Fantasy as it seems easy, and Im sure my friends wont mind $5 for a book. I want something physical that I can turn through the pages quickly instead of alt-tabbing often. I am going to ask them and maybe check out the ones you guys mentioned at the local store later. I am sorry, I meant to post that I was looking for good tabletop games for Roll20, not just in general. I understand 'general' tabletop games would be different from roll20. Thanks for the advice guys, time to do a little more research! :)

In the Other category, there's a Roll20 character sheet for Tavern Tales , which is free and pretty easy to play.
Hate to be that guy, but if we're talking < $20, we should technically state that you can play Dungeons and Dragons 5e, with the Starter Set, Basic Rules PDF, and DM Basic Rules, for around $13 if you use Amazon. I never even occurred to me that this was the case till now, but, I think it's true. Well done Wizards. And after playing 10 or so sessions of 5e, I think its totally playable with just those items listed. If you want to go to the next level, For DMs, I think the DMG is more essential than the Monster's Manual, because the DMG shows you how to make monsters, if you value money > time. PHB has a few extra rules, spells, options, but not something I would consider essential to the experience.
