Do you want to be fantastical heroes?
Knights in shining armor? Are you wanting to roleplay in a lush,
vivid world?
How about a long, whimsical adventure
where you protect the paradise from the doom of a great evil?
Well, you best keep scrolling through
LFG, because we're playing Dark Sun !
Aye, I'm looking to start up a
regularly-scheduled game, probably some short time after the
holidays, set in Athas. Now, I'm not wanting to play in 4th Edition's
view of Athas, where goliaths and dragonborn and tieflings are
shoehorned awkwardly into the Dark Sun canon. I'm wanting a classic
Dark Sun feel, as much of my source material is provided by the 2nd
Edition Dark Sun books and Troy Denning novels.
I like my games to be geared more
towards sandbox than railroad; a game where players are free to carve
their own paths, and make their own dumb mistakes, are usually more
my GM'ing speed. Combat and Roleplay are held in equal regard; some
sessions might be borderline hack-n-slash, others can be all talking
bits and story, and all of the balancing in-between those two.
Details, character development, and
story are things I like to use and see. I'd rather see a good story
being built than fervently sticking to the plot. I'm also a stickler
for the established lore of a Campaign.
I'm pretty new to 5th Edition D&D,
but I've been playing (and running) rpgs for over a decade now,
across many games (AD&D, 3rd Edition, Pathfinder, White Wolf
games, New World of Darkness, WEG's Star Wars, Edge of the Empire,
FFG's Warhammer and Warhammer 40k RPs, the list goes on...) As for
rules lawyering: I like details (as previously mentioned), and I like
injecting a fair bit of realism into my fantasy, so I may bend rules
or make up some sort of modifier for the sake of realism/detail. This
may be to the benefit of the players, or to the detriment.
Your character's lives are not
precious. Although I will not shove the party into unwinnable fights,
if you do something to put yourself in a nearly-guaranteed fatal
position, DM mercy will not save you. Especially not in Dark Sun.
Also, PvP is perfectly fine if it's justified in the Roleplay. Just
remember that no character is beyond death's reach.

Now, onto the game itself!
I'm looking for 4-6 players to get in
on a piece of this roleplay. I'd prefer it if you were 18+, with a
preference towards good roleplay rather than just the ol'
hack-n-slash. Players new to Dark Sun or to 5th Edition are welcome.
Although the days and time we play is
going to be determined later (based on our schedules), being
available somewhere around 16:00-20:00 EST would be fantastic. Those
hours aren't set in stone; if you're available around the general
concept of 'late afternoon/evening' at some point during the week,
then that may do just fine.
You'll also need a microphone and
skype, as I like to do my campaigns over voice.
Any RP dealt in-between sessions, like
during downtime in-game, or small RP that only one or two of the
characters need to participate in, will most likely be dealt with
over text.
The rules system will be base D&D
5e, with added homebrew Dark Sun rules to modify and add to it to
make everything fit Athas. The rules are an amalgamation of Dark Sun
homebrews I've found online, 2nd Edition flare, and special sauce on
a sesame seed bun. I have nifty little google docs about which you'll
see the link to once you're added to the game, so other than that,
you'll just need the 5th Edition Player's Handbook.
This will be an extended campaign,
played either weekly or every 2 weeks.
The setting is To-Be-Determined, but
I'm likely going to run it during the first or second year of the
Free Calendar, and around either the Raam area, or Balic area, of
Athas. This, as well as storylines, will be fleshed out in more
detail after character concepts are figured out. There will be no
scripted plot, but there will be personal goals, mutual goals, side
plots, plot-building RP, and intrigue that will come around as the
game progresses.
The characters will start low-level.
The standard Athasian races: human,
half-elf, elf, half-giant, mul, dwarf, and halfling, will be
available to play. I will allow thri-kreen, but as many aren't savvy
on how alien and different bugfolk are in roleplay, I'm a bit iffy on
giving the thumbs-up on it. Other Athasian races such as gith,
jozhal, pterran, tareks, and tari are possible, but I would need a
bit of convincing to have one of them scurrying around with the
party.
