Starting off with a recap of the previous
session for those that had missed it, selected parts of the journal of the
Undertaker, Janos Barnes, was passed around the table.
It detailed a 25 year long tale of his work
there, how the undertaker was a Corpse-Eater, his relationship with the Ratkin
and their pilgrimages to the undercrypt. His removal of the necklace from Azar’s
sarcophagus. And the plague of rats that had formed within the walls.
Questioning the apprentice Johnathon led to
them discovering that not even he knew of Janos’s true nature, nor was he able
to tell them how to get to the undercrypt. Having neither seen the route, nor
been down there himself, instead he became agitated at Rothuk’s brusque methods
of question and even more upset at the revelation that his master had been
feasting on corpses down there without his knowledge.
Eventually removing them from his room, he shut
the door on them leaving them to do some shopping.
Picking up new gear to aid them in their combat
against the enemies they might find down in the crypt they ventured in once
more. With the party splitting up and attempting to find the switch down to the
undercrypt mentioned in the journal.
Kritty managing to spot it, and before they
could actually stop him, activated the hidden way down into the undercrypt.
Enarit could only look on with disbelief as the sarcophagus slid into wall and
was left flush with it.
Descending into the darkness of the crypt, they
were confronted with a door and soon two others past the corner. These brave
souls boldly entered the first door with a resounding smash and the barbarian
quickly went to work making sure that the graves didn’t actually contain any
unrestful undead. Satisfied with that, he then went to work at trying to open
another door while his companions set to work searching for the Amulet of Azar.
Kritty failed to even spot it while Enarit just
barely missed it during his searches. Only through the useful magic of Ulf were
they able to locate it, tangled in with many other amulets. As he lifted them
from the box, something awoke behind the door that Rothuk was fiddling with.
And it was not happy.
The Guardian of the Crypt moved out into the
room, his commanding presence driving back the two fighters along with his
impressive ability to take a blow from the two. While Rothuk kept its
attention, Kritty flanked it, discovering it to be more vulnerable in the rear.
Enarit, carefully lining up arrows let one fly, striking it square in its
single eye. Despite the power of this guardian, even this was far more than the
Troll-ish construct could handle and it fell back dead, leaving Rothuk to claim
the Spiked Bone Maul from the remains.
With only a single door left, the group
descended more stairs into the tomb of Azar and his fellow heroes.
Gaffer was only able to babble in reverence of
the great hero before him, his pilgrimage complete. And as the amulet was laid
upon the bones of the barbarian before him, his spirit appeared once more.
Telling them that the amulet was the sole thing left for him, his armor taken,
his clothes rotted, and his companion corrupted. Unable to find his amulet, let
alone his armor, he let the group know of a space behind the shelves and his
gaze resting on the fellow barbarian and the Ratkin, he was finally back at
peace.
Unfortunately, there were other things that
weren’t as the large rat burst forth from the wall. Intent on attacking those
within, he started to concentrate to bring forth the darkness. Enarit keeping it distracted and Kritty chipping away
at the undead creature, Rothuk having been driven to anger at lack of smashing
ability played golf with the creature. Unable to advance and unable to retreat,
they managed to keep it there long enough for Ulf to levitate it into the air.
From there it was just a game of popping the piñata.
Dissolving into nothing upon its death, the
group turned back and discussed what they were to do now.
Gaffer excused himself, asking them to leave
them so he could perform rites to purify the site. But promised them that they
would have an ally in him for all they have done for the great hero.
The rest of the group left, searching out Azar’s
final message to them. And they found it in a hidden space beyond the shelves
in the undertaker’s living quarters. The wall bashed down before Rothuk’s might
and Ulf’s magic. They found shelves, most of rusting weapons, but a few choice
items still remained along with a map to an unknown place.
But, where does the map lead them?

Special
Treasure:
Set 1
Peeking out from
a cloth wrap is what appears to be a bow and quiver. Unrolling the black cloth
reveals a surcoat made from plain black cotton and trimmed with yellow. The
treasures inside are worth far more.
A large quiver,
fit to the hip and able to hold up to 50 arrows at once, made from what appears
to be black snakeskin, tailored without flaw, and trimmed with brown fur from a
reindeer and lined with smooth samite. A strange quality of the quiver itself is
that the snakeskin feels as though it slithers under the slightest touch.
Further investigation reveals that it will constantly produce blunted arrows
from a cornucopia enchantment.
The bow itself
is a Welsh Longbow, fit for a man of more than average strength. Well balanced
to help with aiming, the grip made from the same black snakeskin although it
doesn’t share the quiver’s curious properties. The bow itself is identified as
having two enchantments on it, one to help the wielder aim it faster and one to
help the arrows seek their way to the enemy’s vitals.
Set 2
Pieces of armor
made from the bones of some unnamed animal. Gauntlets, feeling thick but light
feeling as though they might afford more protection than simple iron. Fitted
into the knuckles are teeth from whatever animal it came from, looking it would
give more heft to any punch that might be thrown. But simply touching the teeth
gives a strange feeling, as though they might even try to bite into the enemy.
And going along with the gauntlets are sabatons made from the same bone,
feeling lighter and more protective than plain metal once again.
Consulting with
Gaffer reveals them to be two pieces of the armor that was given to the barbarian
hero, Azar. Believing them to be a present to Rothuk, he allows them to keep
them.
Set 3
Tucked away in a
wool poncho is a weapon that befits a cleric of a war god. What appears to be a
modified Morningstar, hefting a large silver coated sawblade rather than a ball
of iron. Sharped to a fine point and balanced perfectly to the point where there’s
no delay between attacks and just giving off a general sense of danger.
Although every time it is swung, a faint glow trails behind the chain and head
for a second before dissipating as though it were never there to begin with.
Set 4
Folded neatly on
a shelf is a buff leather coat with a dagger sheathed on the belt of the coat.
Held up it’s a
long coat with a large enough collar to provide protection to the wearer’s
neck. Made from fine ox hide and trimmed with fur from the same animal, it
smells not of wet animal, but of the sea and the salt air. Curiously, it seems
to be constantly dry whenever not in contact with water. Enchanted with Fortify
and Lighten makes it easier for the wearer and more protective.
The dagger
itself is far more intricate. A Rondel Dagger, balanced expertly, and made from
very fine materials. In fact the blade is made from tempered glass. The Sea
foam blue glass is further inlaid with electrum in a simple geometric pattern
all along the blade, proving not just the smith’s worth with glass but also his
worth with metal working. It holds the enchantment of vital seeker, making it easier
to plunge into the heart of enemies
Searching within
the coat is a small box, crafted from dragonbone. With a relief of a dragon
head on the top and possessing the same strange property of the coat to stay
dry. Inside can be found a set of simple playing cards.
Set 5
Careful
searching with magic sight revealed there to be a tiny ring upon the ground. A
gold ring with small rubies and bloodstones and smelling of smoke. Careful
inspection of it reveals that it has been enchanted with the Ignite Fire spell.
Given that and its worth, it may be on the way to becoming a powerful Power
Item for some worthy wizard.
