How to Make a Macro to Roll as a Particular Character

This is probably painfully obvious but I've been looking around on the forum and wiki but haven't found the answer I'm looking for. I'm running a game that has a lot of NPCs. As a result, during combat I'm usually rolling both for ally NPCs and oppositional antagonists. I find it takes too much time and energy to always find the character I want to roll for in the drop down menu, but if I just keep rolling using one name (such as my GM name) it becomes confusing later to remember which rolls were for which NPCs. So I've tried making their dice rolls as Ability macros, but when I roll those it still rolls as whatever name I currently have on the drop down menu rather than for the character whose ability it was. So my question is, how do I make a macro that will roll the dice using the name and picture of a specific character even if that character isn't highlighted in the drop down menu? I want to be able to have a list of macros for various characters so that when I want to roll for one I can just copy/paste it into the dice window without having to select their name. Also note, the game system we're using doesn't use tokens, so preferably a method that doesn't require highlighting a token.

You could use the /as or /emas commands with inline rolls, plus @{selected|character_name} (if the NPC has a character sheet) or @{selected|token_name} (if the token has a name). Note that neither /as nor /emas will show the character's avatar image in the chat. /as "@{selected|character_name}" I will crush you!! ([[d20+@{selected|strength-mod}]] vs. AC) For example.
