Nested Tokens

While one can group tokens, say a PC token with a torch token attached, this process prevents the surrounding popup menus for a token from being displayed when it is clicked. I suggest a Nested Tokens tab be placed in the Edit Tokens window. In it could be a table for tokens that are nested with the currently selected token. It should include a button to "Add Token" which allows only named tokens to be selected and added to the list. A red X can be placed beside an added token's name to remove the nesting, depositing the nested token(s) in the same position as the selected one. This could provide a way of implementing treasure chests, PC inventories, and any number of other ideas i can't come up with right now ...

Hold down Alt when clicking on a token. The popup menu will be displayed.  - Gauss
I have tried your suggestion and it does not work. Right clicking on a token brings up the circle-menu. When I group tokens left-clicking does nothing as does when I hold Alt. Right-clicking just brings up the context sensitive menu.

Deselect group. Hold down Alt and then left click on token.  Im guessing the problem is the group was already selected when you tried. :) - Gauss
I'm actually having some problems with token groups and think they could be improved. The alt clicking DOES work for me, however it only works if the group is unselected. And if you try to move the group without selecting it first, it will only move a single one of the tokens. I think it should be changed so that the whole group moves when you try to move it (either selected, or unselected) and then you can Alt+click whether they are selected or not, and the alt+click allows you to move the individual tokens. Also, I noticed that there are some... odd problems that come up if you try to add a token group as the default for a character sheet. It will only add a single token to the sheet, and then when you place that token onto the map, it will 'merge' with the old group, but only partially. If you move the copied token, it will move the original token in the group it was copied from, but not the rest of the group. And if you move the original token, it will move the group, but not the duplicates. It would be nice to fix this by having a full group be able to be assigned as a default token when selected.

Ceetee, to move a group you need to double click.  What do grouped tokens need to do? 1) They need to be able to be normally selected. This can be done via the Alt key by selecting the token you want (note: need to not have the group selected first).  2) They need to be able to be moved individually. This is default. 3) They need to be able to be moved as a group. This is done by double clicking the group.  If you have a specific suggestion on how to do it different please feel free. Note: If I remember correctly, #2 was requested by the users quite awhile back. They wanted a way to move a token without having to hold down the Alt key.  Regarding the 'odd problems', if you could post a bug report for that I can help troubleshoot it. A suggestion forum is not the best place to troubleshoot things. :) - Gauss
I completely disagree with point number two. THey do NOT need to be able to be moved individually. Grouped tokens should always move together unless you ungroup them. Anything else just goes against what grouped means period.

Players cannot ungroup them. Thus, they need to be moved individually. I know I wouldn't want to have to ask the GM to ungroup and regroup my tokens every time I shifted the position of my torch. As a GM, I wouldn't want to do that either.  - Gauss
All I know is that the move individually while grouped absolutely fucking pisses me off when I'm making a map. It's not intuitive at all. If I group tokens, I expect them to move together as a GROUP  each and every time I click on them and drag them to move them. That's how grouping works in pretty much every other damn program out there.
I agree with HoneyBadger on this point. The intuitive use of grouped objects comes from all other programs we use. I do not know of a single program that uses grouped objects in another way - except Roll20. Roll20 combines standard mouse actions (double and single-clicking) with non-standard actions (group move and individual object move, respectively). In fact, individual object moving of a grouped object is totally against intuitive thinking and should be removed. Assigning token ownership/control is already a non-standard method of grouping in that the player can control a set (group) of objects. See my forum post, Unifying the UI , in the Suggestions & Ideas section for further discussion. Further: Why can't players fully control their own tokens? Players controlling both character and torch tokens, say, must be allowed to be able to group and ungroup the tokens themselves - it is perfectly logical for players to want to control their own tokens, when the GMs allow of course.
I have checked the suggested mouse-keyboard combination actions again and Alt-clicking does nothing for me, nor does deselecting a token and reselecting it. It has worked as advised on occasion, but less than 20% of the time. I must also point out that I am using Dynamic Lighting, however, even after turning off Dynamic Lighting I still have the same problem. I wonder if I have a Chrome extension giving me grief??? Looking at my extensions I don't have anything that looks for alternate User input.  Maybe I should try Roll20 in Firefox. UPDATE: Okay - I have some more details about the token surrounding menus. As stated above, it rarely happens that the menu appears when I just click on a token, whether or not it has focus prior to clicking on it. What I have found out is that the surrounding menus do always appear if I move the token to another position whether or not it has focus. Grouped tokens are still causing me problems though.

Robert, that is odd, could you make a bug report on this so we can troubleshoot it? Thanks.  - Gauss
In regards to the moving individual objects inside groups-- groups normally have a condition of being opened or closed.  When they are closed (by default) they always behave as a single object. When they are open, you can interact with the contents of the group inside a group-limited scope.
Will do Gauss.
