Question for fellow tile creators about commercial work

I was contacted by someone wanting me to do some commissioned work for them for commercial use. I'm wondering if any of you have experience with this and how much you charge? I'm not certain of all the details yet, but I wanted to get a ballpark figure so I may have a starting point. All your input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Yanet H. aka Rhyannon

Depends on how many maps they want. I'd charge them for how much the tiles would normally net me in about a half-year on Roll20.

Thanks for the reply Simon, that's definitely a good starting point. I've asked for more details on the commission, so we'll see how this goes :) Again, thanks for the input, much appreciated.

I'm there with Simon in basing your price off of your potential earnings here. If you have several ways to monetize something, all other things being equal (such as hassle of working with someone else etc.), go with the one that will keep more kibble in your cat's dish. I personally love it here because the money is good, especially over the long term, and the roll20 team are wonderful should anything go wrong (and by go wrong I mean I mess something up).

I would have recommended hourly, but I've gotten to a point where I can crank out a small map in less than an hour, due to the process I use which has become like muscle memory.

I would agree with both Simon and Gabriel. Rhyannon, you mentioned this will be for commercial work? So are you helping create a brand for them or tilesets? Will the work be replicated in one form or another throughout their business (website, business cards, logo, etc.)? Keep that in mind and for all that is good, don't fall for the "it will get you exposure" line. The electric and phone can't be paid with 'exposure' and good will. Make sure you divorce yourself from your product a bit - tell them "It will cost" rather than "I can do it for..." Give the client some wiggle room, but be careful of how much you give. You are worth money. If they don't see it, the next client will.

Thank you for the feedback guys, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to speak with the person who contacted me for further details yet. Either way the input and information you all have provided is very valuable and have a good starting point for this and future commission/commercial works.
